ABOUT US

The Department of Materials Science andEngineering at IIT Kanpur strives to preparetechnologists/engineers for developing newmaterials and processes for applications invariety of industries in metal and mining, automotive, chemical, aviation, plastic, biotechnology, semiconductor solar and energysector.

The Department of Materials Science andEngineering (MSE), earlier known asMetallurgical and Materials Engineering at IITKanpur was established in 1960. From itsinception, it has had strong impact in providingknowledgeable manpower to meet the nation’sdemand in traditional metallurgy.

The department has reinvented constantly tokeep the IIT curriculum in pace with the state-of-the-art technologies. The field of study in thedepartment now encompasses the entirespectrum of extractive metallurgy, physicalmetallurgy, manufacturing processing, electronic and semiconductor materials, biomaterials, ceramics and composites. Thisdepartment has pioneered a unified approachto teaching and research, which has enabled usto evolve into an interdisciplinary field cateringto diverse applications.
