SUMMARY
In September 1992, a continuous-mode magnetic survey
was carried out over 53.1 line-kms of a grid located on a
property owned by PLACER DOME INC., #179 LOWER DETOUR LAKE
Project, Province of Ontario.
The magnetic survey successfully differentiated the
various sequences of metavolcanic and metasedimentary
lithologies, varying in composition from ultramafic to
felsic. It also detected few iron formations associated
with some of the metasedimentary horizons.
The results also outlined the presence of a semi
circular magnetic feature stratigraphically located below
two known massive sulphide horizons. This feature is
interpreted as a possible volcanic complex located at
depth.
The structural features of the survey area were
outlined by numerous discontinuities of the magnetic
anomalies. They include few diabase (?) dykes and series
of late faults preferentially oriented NNW-SSE, NW-SE and
NE-SW.

INTRODUCTION
In September 1992, a magnetic survey was carried out
on a property owned by PLACER DOME INC., #179 LOWER DETOUR
LAKE Project, Province of Ontario.
This survey was designed to locate horizons and/or
structures favorable for base metal or gold deposition.
PROPERTY, LOCATION AND ACCESS
The property is located approximately 15 kms to the SE
of Detour Mine site and approximately 210 kms NE of the
town of Timmins. It covers an area South of Detour River
between Lower Detour Lake and the Quebec border, in the
province of Ontario. This property is accessible by boat
across Lower Detour Lake and then few kilometres down
Detour River. Lower Detour Lake is accessible from a road
off the mine site.
The property claim numbers, shown in figure #1, have
been registered with the Ministry of Northern Development
and Mines of Ontario. The area covered by this survey is
shown in figure #2 of the present report.
GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY
A total magnetic field survey was carried out on part
of the property on September 12 to 15, 1992. A total of
53. l kms was covered by the magnetic survey using a GEM
magnetometer, model GSM-19.
QvO
2
SURVEY SPECIFICATIONS
The magnetic survey was carried out along grid lines
oriented N-S and cut at a 100-metre interval. The grid
lines were chained and stations marked every 25 metres.
The magnetic readings were taken with a portable
magnetometer operating with the Overhauser sensor
principle. The total magnetic field was measured every two
seconds in a continuous reading mode with a precision of
0.1 nanoTesla (nT). The readings were systematically
controlled for location every 12.5 metres. The
magnetometer was operated with the sensor mounted on top of
a backpack frame. The noise enveloppe is estimated at 5 nT
after a short wavelenght filter was applied to remove noisy
spikes.
A base station magnetometer measuring the total
magnetic field every 20 seconds was used as a reference for
correction of the diurnal variation.
RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION
The magnetic grain is very active and is dominated by
series of alternating sequences of ultramafic to mafic
metavolcanic rocks (labelled l and 2) and by
metasedimentary lithologies with associated iron formations
{labelled 6 and 7). These lithologies are characterized by
moderately wide areas - 50 to over 200 metres in width - of
narrow and continuous anomalies of higher magnetic
susceptibility.
GvD
-3-
The general magnetic background ranges around 58300 to
58350 nanoTeslas (nT), with residual anomalous values from
approximately 200 to more than 2000 nT. In less active
areas, the general magnetic grain of the property is
dominated by felsic to intermediate metavolcanics (labelled
3 and 4) and metasedimentary lithologies (labelled 6).
With the exception of few NNW-SSE striking diabase ( ?)
dykes and numerous cross-cutting late faults, the magnetic
grain is completely dominated by lithologies oriented ESE-
WNW. The magnetic gradients of the anomalous sources
indicate a moderate overburden thickness of less than 25
metres for the southern part of survey area.
To the North, the western extension of the wide
sequence of ultramafic to mafic rocks across the center of
the survey area appears to be downfaulted at much greater
depth. Further to the East and North of the sequence of
ultramafic to mafic rocks, the overburden thickness appears
to increase to more than 30 metres.
A broad anomalous magnetic zone of moderate amplitude,
located in the mid-central part of the survey area between
grid lines 11000E and 11600E to the North of the base line,
is dissected by several late faults and appears to be
constituted by magnetic features distributed in a semi
circular pattern [best seen with the shadow version of the
gridded values]. This magnetic zone is interpreted as a
possible volcanic complex at depth and, interestingly,
appears to be stratigraphically located below the two known
massive sulphide horizons.
GvD
-4-
The magnetic results indicate that these known massive
sulphide horizons are apparently non magnetic and are
hosted within a sequence of felsic to intermediate
lithologies (4) and near their contact with a sequence of
highly magnetic mafic metavolcanic rocks (2).
The magnetic results could be used to identify the
location of the most promising areas for additional massive
sulphide horizons, probably along the eastern and western
extensions of the contact of the mafic and felsic-
intermediate volcanic sequences.
Several structural features were also outlined by the
magnetic survey. They include few diabase (?) dykes and
faults oriented NNW-SSE and NW-SE, and another series of
faults oriented NE-SW. The presence of a fault and/or
shear zone oriented approximately E-W is also defined by
the magnetic results. With the exception of the subtle
magnetic anomalies associated with the dykes, all these
structural features are expressed by discontinuities
observed along the magnetic lithologies.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The magnetic survey was successfull in delineating
some of the major lithotectonic features of the #179 LOWER
DETOUR LAKE Project owned by PLACER DOME INC.
Gs/D
-5-
A correlation of the magnetic results with available
geological information permitted to differentiate the
various sequences of metavolcanic rocks of ultramafic to
felsic composition and the presence of metasedimentary
rocks associated with iron formations. Several late faults
and few diabase (?) dykes oriented NNW-SSE, NW-SE and NE-SW
are interpreted from the magnetic results.
The presence of a semi-circular magnetic feature is
also outlined to the North of two non magnetic massive
sulphide horizons which are hosted within a series of
felsic to intermediate volcanics. This feature is
interpreted as a possible volcanic complex located at
depth.
It is recommended to carry out a detail structural and
lithologic interpretation of the magnetic results in
conjunction with the geologic and geochemical databases of
the property to locate the most promising areas for
extensions of the known massive sulphide lenses or to find
new horizons.
