The city is located on the left bank of the River Narva , 14 km from the mouth in the Gulf of Finland, on the border with Russia, 140 km from Saint-Petersburg and 210 km east of Tallinn.

Narva Castle is on thebank of the river Narva , opposite Russian fortress.It was founded bythe Danes in the XIII century.The first record of the town dates back to 1240, and in 1345 it was granred the status of a town. In 1346, the Danish King Waldemar IV sold Northern Estonia, including Narva, to the Teutonic Knights. In 1347 the Estonian land and all the fortifications were resold to the Livonian Order. In 1558, Narva and the castle were taken by Russian troops. In the years 1581-1704 the town was in Swedish possession, and again went to Russia in 1704.During the Second World War Narva was heavily damaged, 98% of the town were in ruins. The castle was restored in 1980’s, now it is Narva Museum.

Opposite the castle, on the other bank of the Narva River, there is Russia's fortress of Ivangorod.

Narva City Hall was built in North Baroque style by the desigh of the architect George Teufel. Construction work began in 1668 and it was completed in 1672.

Bastions were parts of fortification system of Narva of the 17th century. They were constructed by the design of the famous Swedish military engineer and architect Eric Dalberg. By the begining of the Northern War there was a belt of 8 bastions which surrounded Narva: Pax, Victoria, Honor, Gloria, Fama,, Triumph, Fortune, Spes. The construction of the 9th bastion Justice was not completed. The tallest of bastions is Victoris (16 m high). Inside bastions there were casemates. Their total length is 1.5 km.The bastions were very impressive and made Narva fortress one of the most perfect and strongest in Europe.Even now they are considered to be well preserved.

13 kilometers away from Narva, in the place where the river Narva flows in to the Gulf of Finland there is a resort town of Narva-Yyesuu . Pine trees, white sand beach stretching for 12 km make it a charming place for relaxing summer vocations, particularly for people of Narva city. You can also stay here in of the spa hotels. From the the 19th century to World War I Narva Yyesuu was a favourite place for poets, writers, artists and musicians and especially for St,Petersburg elite
