Stan Kreuter looks pretty happy for a banker who may or may not have lost his entire town’s life savings.

At the annual Gecko Ball, a packed Gulfport Casino rocked the town on August 23. The sold-out event took on a Jazz Age theme this year: Roaring Geckos. Flapper queens, Gatsby types, bankers and one man in a blue striped bathing costume overtook the Casino and the Z Street Speakeasy Band kept the Zeldas and Art Deco fans entertained. Backfin Blue Café catered, complete with serving girls dressed as flappers. The Gecko Ball is one of three Gecko-related activities during Gulfport’s Gecko Season. The culmination of the season will take place this Saturday, August 30, with GeckoFest, an all-day-and-part-of-the-night celebration of Gulfport.

Gail Biron and partner Pauline Laurendeau cut a rug, flapper style.

Dean Wick and Stone Handy might be bartenders or gangsters – shady characters either way in the Jazz Age.

Saturday night, Gulfport crowned a new Gecko Queen: Wesley Sloat (left). Mayor Sam Henderson crowned him the second-ever Gecko Queen. The first queen, Faun Weaver, graciously relinquished her crown.

Angela Lagan is pretty in pink and looks like “sugar and spice” personified.

Christoper “Toffer” Ross looks suspiciously like Amelia Earhart. So much so, she won the costume contest. Vivian Hawker also won the contest; Hawker made her entire costume.

Teen Council Distributes School Supplies The Gulfport Teen Council had a successful school supply drive. An overwhelming amount of donated supplies such as paper, crayons, pencils, pens, folders, binders, etc. were received. “These supplies enable students to have the items needed for a good start for the school year, as many families do not have the financial

resources to provide these supplies,” said Mary Ruth Bumgarner, Family and Community Liaison at Gulfport Elementary. “These projects let the students know that members of the community care about them and their educational success.” The supplies were distributed to Boca Ciega High, Hamilton Disston, Thurgood Marshall Fundamental and Gulfport Elementary. The Gulfport Teen Council would like to thank everyone that made this project a success.

“Enrique’s Journey” Author to Speak Sonia Nazario, author of “Enrique’s Journey,” speaks at Eckerd College in Fox Hall on Thursday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m. She will appear with Lourdes Flores, the mother of Enrique. Nazario’s book tells the true story of a Honduran boy who embarks on a quest to find his mother, Lourdes Flores, who left him 11 years earlier to find work in the US. This powerful tale echoes with the immediacy of the ongoing refugee crisis along the US/Mexico border involving tens of thousands of Central American children who are escaping drug-fueled violence at home. Based on the Los Angeles Times series that won two Pulitzer Prizes, the George Polk Award for International Reporting and the Grand Prize of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards, Enrique’s Journey puts a human face on the debate about immigration in the US. The book won the 2011 Williams College Book Award Program and has been translated into eight languages. Nazario, who retraced Enrique’s

perilous path atop trains bound for the US, has become an outspoken advocate for these refugee children, testifying before congress and quoted widely, from the New York Times to CNN to the Daily Show. The event is free and open to the public. Eckerd College is located at 4200 54th Ave. S. in St. Petersburg. For more information, contact [email protected] or 727-864-7979.

City of GulfportQ: I saw the giant "Klansman Ghost carrying wind chimes," along with several other pieces that had either been recently planted, or were in the process of being planted [in Clymer Park]. It all looks very nice, but I couldn't help but ask myself, "Where does the money for all this come from?” – Bob Usher, via the Gabber’s Gulfport Ideas and Opinions Facebook group

A: Penny for Pinellas monies funded the artwork, according to Gulfport City Manager Jim O’Reilly. In the 2012-2013 fiscal year, the council approved using $100,000 for the art, sidewalk and related improvements as part of the five-year capital improvement program budget. O’Reilly also added this statement: Gulfport “sought proposals for durable and weather-resistant artwork, such as sculptures or cast pieces to enhance the appearance of the park. Artists were encouraged to visit the park to review the location and medium conducive to supporting durable and creative outdoor public art. It is necessary for the media and/or artwork to withstand outside environmental elements including but not limited to rain, wind, and the heat of the summer sun. The artwork is required to need minimal maintenance and be created to enjoy longevity and must be appropriate for an active public pedestrian environment, with proper consideration given to the safety of the audience.”
