Citing: Do you need to memorize citation formats?

Does the format matter?

-Different disciplines use different templates or systems-Some templates and systems work better with lectures, some work better when taking notes during research -More information available: http://libguides.hct.ac.ae/tips_on_taking_notes

What does matter? • Stay organized and neat: Use quotations marks to specify words that are

not yours and write in handwriting that you will be able to read later.

• Note citation information: If you do not, you may not be able to find it again and then you’re wasting your time since you cannot use information that you cannot site.

• Save time: Don’t write down every detail when you can save time by noting important key points and citation information in order to refer to the original text later in your research. Also use abbreviations and symbols (that you understand).

Let’s PracticeTen Minutes

Five MinutesSwitch papers with your neighbor and complete the review checklist.

How did it go?

Did your partner…• Include citation information for the text?

• Use their own words to paraphrase key points?

• Use quotation marks when directly quoting the text?

How do your notes compare to your partner’s notes? Did you both include thesame main ideas? If not, why do you think this is? Did your neighbor do somethingthat you will incorporate into your note-taking?

In Your Own Words:

• What is plagiarism?

• What are three things that you learned about note-taking today?
