Monthly Report on activities for the month of February 2015
RECOMMENDATION THAT the report be received, and THAT the
correspondence from Goldfields School be received, and THAT
consideration be given to the request from Goldfields School, and
THAT the Ward Committee considers the funding request received from
the Kaiaua Residents group seeking support towards the resurfacing
of the Kaiaua tennis courts with funding available from the Ward
Discretionary Fund or Community Recreational Facilities Development
Fund. Community Development Requests for Financial Assistance
[CDV-30-100] The Plains Ward Committee has been allocated $4,153.87
for discretionary grants for the 2014/15 financial year. Grants
have been made to the following:

BALANCE $2,277.07 There is one requests for financial assistance
this month. Goldfields School [Appendix A 1329638, 132640] The
Principal for the school writes requesting sponsorship for their
redevelopment project. The school needs to raise at least $250,000
to ensure a safe, therapeutic and learning environment for students
with special needs. Ward Social initiatives The Plains Ward
Committee has $5,000 from the 2013/14 term that was not allocated
and a further $5,000 for the 2014/15 term making a total of $10,000
for discretionary grants of a social services nature. Social
Initiatives Scoping Project Staff are currently preparing a
resource and assets analysis database including a list of agencies
providing services relevant to youth in Paeroa. The next stage from
this is a review of the data with key agencies. Significant

Project Status: Council is receiving different play equipment
options at present GENERAL Application for Tree Removal on East
Coast Road, Kaiaua Following on from the presentation at the
February Ward Committee meeting in regards to an application for
tree removal on East Coast Road, Kaiaua, staff will present options
for the Ward Committee to consider. Hugh Hayward Domain Trees There
have been several trees removed on the Hugh Hayward Domain over the
last month. One is located at the back of a McQuarrie Place house
where in previous years the land owner had used some of the Domain
land and planted a tree on top of the water main. This was causing
major issues and in the last month has caused two water breaks with
roots damaging the water line. This tree was removed and in
consultation with the current land owner, the fence was shifted
back to its proper boundary line. Two other trees that were growing
adjacent to Pipiroa Road were also removed after pedestrians were
injured through tripping on the fallen cones. Kaiaua Tennis Courts
(1329363, 1329366) A request has been received from a group of
Kaiaua residents attached (Appendix A) who are fundraising to get
the tennis courts back to a usable state. This group have been
fundraising, and have a programme of further fundraising. The group
have come to Council with a request for financial help with the
resurfacing project. They have received a quote from a suitable
contractor attached (Appendix B) as an indication of cost to

Dear mayor and CouncillorsPlease find attached a flier for an
upcoming sponsored walk which kick starts our fundraising forthe
year.As the flier states, this will be a Landmark Year for
Goldfields in many ways and I hope that it alsosees real interest
and commitment shown to the school from yourselves as our elected
body.Whilst everyone is busy and I do appreciate that, genuine
interest has only really been shown byJulie Bubb and Gill Leonard
in the time I have been at the school, just over 6 years now.The
flier outlines the main reasons why we are asking for support and
is aimed at corporatebodies. I have however chosen to send it to
groups who we work closely with and draw theirattention to the
Commemorative Supporters Wall I plan to build to honour and show
ourappreciation of all those who have supported the development we
have planned. These groupsinclude Ministry SE; Cyfs; Principals
forums; healthcare and the police.I have a rather simple mentality
on some things and think it would be great for our students,staff
and community to see that real support for the future of our
schools comes not just fromgenerous individuals and companies but
also from professionals and elected bodies.I hope that you will
each consider this something that is worthy of your personal
support andcollectively consider a joint sponsorship. The Council
itself might also consider this something ofworth as what we are
planning is to really future proof the school and build outside
space whichmeet the needs of students Sensory Integration and

2015 is a landmark year for us here at Goldfields School.
After over 5 years of consultation, negotiation and planning we
are finally seeing our longed for
property developments come to fruition. Two refurbished
Satellite classes will be built at local
mainstream schools (Miller Avenue and Te Aroha Primary Schools).
These will afford more
opportunities for students who have special needs (ie are ORS
funded), to benefit from our specialist
teachers, therapists and para-professional team.
Here at the Base School we will see the demolition of long
condemned classrooms and buildings (ie
half our school), and new, purposefully designed buildings
replacing them. Our aged and inaccessible
Administration and Resource block will be refurbished and
altered to ensure it meets the needs of our
students, staff and wider community.
However, we have only basic ground works money for our Base
School in these redevelopment plans.
We do not have the funds needed to ensure that all of our
outside spaces are designed and equipped
to meet the very special physical, emotional, learning and
therapeutic needs of our students. Most
schools have playgrounds and everyone is familiar with this
term. Here at Goldfields our outside
spaces are integral to the teaching, learning and therapeutic
programmes that every student requires.
They are essential areas for the students Sensory Integration
and Social Development - not just
open spaces or playgrounds.
Our core planning team, which includes specialist Therapists and
Teachers, has calculated that
minimally we need to raise at least $250,000. This will enable
us to ensure the surfaces, equipment
and indeed fence panels are safe; meet the very special
therapeutic and learning needs of our
students; and most importantly, will stand the test of time. In
this we need your help.
To Kick Start our fundraising for the year, I will be taking
part in the Nature Valley Length of the
Lake Event at Lake Taupo on February 21st
as a solo walker, covering some 70km. We also have two
staff teams doing the relay event over the same distance and our
community are busy raising
sponsorship for them. My hope is that local businesses and
companies within our school catchment
area (which covers all of the Coromandel, Hauraki, Piako and
Thames Valley Districts), and hopefully
some national businesses too, will see our appeal as a worthy
cause and be prepared to sponsor me
for the walk.
Over the page are details of how companies or individuals may
sponsor me for this event, or indeed
just make a donation to our school fundraising appeal.

Good morning Steve.Regarding the Kaiaua Tennis Courts, we had a
meeting yesterday afternoon and would like to makea request to the
council to help with funding for the upgrade of courts.At the
moment we havefunds of $5000.00 and will be holding a gambling
evening to raise funds and also a Dinner withguest speaker as
another fundraiser.We are hoping to have these around May and
August.We have other ideas but will concentrate on these two
first.When I was speaking to you about the courts you were saying
Whiritoa had there courts redoneand it cost about $23000.00.Would
you know who I could contact to get a quote from them?We would
appreciate any funding available from the council to help with this
project.We would love to see the courts up and running by next
summer.
