Last year proved to be another record year for aircraft production with, 1397 aircraft flying off the production lines in 2015. This increased the value to UK industry by around £3Bn from the previous year. Civil aircraft production levels have grown such that an aircraft is delivered every 6½ hours from one of the world’s final assembly lines. It is the soaring success of our industry that has convinced the UK Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review to maintain support for the vital Aerospace Growth Partnership (AGP). By committing an extra £900 million in aerospace funding for Research and Development up to 2026 the industry has the long term support it needs to make the right investment decisions.

I mentioned in my last report that I had been invited to join the Board of the Aerospace Growth Partnership (AGP) and primarily to represent the Supply Chain. So much of the work of the Aerospace Growth Partnership has been focused on “Technology” and securing funding for the Aerospace Technology Institute which now has support to 2026. I am delighted that the Board of the AGP has decided that it will now focus its efforts on the “Supply Chain”. At the last meeting the board discussed the importance of maintaining manufacturing

and supply chain capability in the UK which I know will be of interest to our members. I’m excited that this is the start of a more strategic approach to how we build world-class capability, capacity and competitiveness at all levels of the supply chain.

Of course defence and military air in particular, are also hugely important to our region. I have been in the privileged position to visit both the BAE Systems Warton and Samlesbury sites in recent months. I was fortunate to tour the F-35 assembly facility which I have to say is one of the most impressive manufacturing sites I have ever seen. I was also able to tour the Eurofighter Typhoon final assembly line which must be one of the very few places in the UK with full aircraft production capability. Both visits were inspirational.

I was also inspired by the opening in January of the new clean room at Safran-Aircelle in Burnley. This new investment will manufacture the carbon fibre composite nacelle for the CFM International LEAP-1A engines on the AIRBUS A320neo single-aisle aircraft. This aircraft programme requires the most rapid production ramp-up ever for the civil aerospace industry and is why the Burnley site is now applying advanced processes such as robotic fibre placement machines

for the lay-up of composite material. This places the Burnley site at the top level of production capability for composite structures and is another example of world-class capability in our region.

I have also had the pleasure to visit Preston’s College and the new iSTEM Centre, the launch of Nelson and Colne College’s Engineering Centre and to see the investment from Training 2000 in a new Advanced Manufacturing Centre. It is great to see the region is investing in these new facilities to train the young engineers of the future.

On a final note, NWAA is now working towards our four key events of the year; the New Talent Awards Night (3rd March 2016), our Annual Conference (12th May 2016), Farnborough International Air Show 2016 (11th July 2016) and returning for the first time in a number of years the NWAA Annual Aerospace Ball (7th October 2016). Please make sure they are in your diary, the best way you can get value from you membership is to get involved, we’re here to work with and for our members, and these are great opportunities to engage with us and the wider industry.

NWAA Chairman’s Spring StatementBy Neil McKay

The year ahead looks, even this early, to be quite a challenging one given the current economic turmoil and the effects of a lower oil price on the global economy. The UK negotiations with Europe and the resultant upcoming referendum have the potential for significant impacts upon our industry but are difficult to judge in outcome terms at this stage. There will be issues to resolve collectively either way but we are however one of the strongest industries with probably the greatest growth potential of any sector in world economies and so are well placed for all eventualities.

The government support to aerospace continues to be strong and does recognise our unique impact on the national economy over the next generation. This is best evidenced by continued funding and involvement in the industries strategic planning through the AGP It is also striking and significant that the leadership of the AGP is recognising the need for supply chain emphasis in the next phase of national strategy and it is crucial for our future competitiveness that mechanisms for supply chain

improvement drive increased UK performance at all levels of the industry rendering us capable for all political outcomes.

Action on the ground in this region is being influenced through the supply chain workshops and continues to feed the material driving future change mechanisms that we will encompass in our future programme plans, currently under discussion with the regional authorities for intended application this year. The workshop material is also influencing the AGP leadership who can see strong signals and a pragmatic approach demonstrating a “can do” attitude from the supply chain itself. This gives us, through our CEO, a strong voice in the formulation of sector strategy through a future SC 21+ programme for the development of all companies in the supply chain to high global standards.

This theme will be behind all our events this year and we will look to build from this basis with the involvement of all our members. Your opportunity to be involved is enhanced by the nature of our eventing this year. We are

endeavouring to engage all levels and participants of the supply chain whether that be at the regular workshops or at the major events such as the annual conference in May or at Farnborough this summer. Also in October we have reintroduced the NWAA Annual Aerospace Ball after many members lobbied for it to be brought back as a unique networking and general business get together.

Through these and other types of forums being planned we aim to get all of the membership close to the information sources and influences and ultimately involved in programmes that drive through that mechanism for change to an unparalleled competitive position in global markets.

NATEP NEWS

NATEPWhat’s Happening in NATEP?The North West projects funded in Call 5 have been launching over the last quarter with some fascinating projects across a range of technologies including UAV’s, graphene, signal & image processing, manufacturing processes and tooling. Details on all of the projects are available on the NATEP website www.natep.org.uk.

Over 100 projects have been launched to date nationally, with a small number still to launch in the coming weeks. Whilst the funding calls for NATEP have ended it has been confirmed that the current programme will run until September 2017, and there is work being done to try and secure funding to run additional calls in the future.

Flight Guardian is Successfully Completed.

The NWAA team were proud to be involved with the first successfully completed NATEP Project. The team behind Flight Guardian – The Great Circle Ltd, the University of Central Lancashire and McLaren Applied Technologies (end user) set out to integrate movement and sensor tech-nologies, which could be developed into a system to read aircraft analogue instruments, recognise hazardous situa-tions in flight and communicate voice activated prompts to the pilot. The system was successfully flight tested at Thirsk Airfield and the team presented their findings at the Best of UCLAN Showcase event, held on 19th November 2015. Post NATEP, further work is required to develop the capabil-ity into a working product which can be commercialised, however the work done within the NATEP funded project has been very successful.

NATEP at Farnborough

Farnborough International Air Show is always a good opportunity to see demonstrated the capability of companies in the supply chain. A number of companies that are involved in NATEP projects have already confirmed their attendance at the show; this is an ideal opportunity to talk to them directly about their new technologies.

Hyde Aero Projects are leading on NATEP project Cryogenic Research of Efficiency on Structural Titanium (C.R.E.S.T.) and will be exhibiting with the NWAA on stand B140 in Hall 1. The project aims to determine and understand the benefits of Cryogenic rough machining strategies when applied to prismatic Titanium Structural Airframe components in comparison to the traditional emulsion application. Working with partners Walter GB Ltd, Starrag UK Ltd, and with the support of BAE SYSTEMS, Hyde are looking to enhance the affordability of titanium machining in the UK.

Valuechain.com will also be exhibiting with the NWAA and this is a great opportunity to talk to the team about how they are working with Bombardier, Stainless Plating Ltd and Alloy Heat Treatments on improving the service levels, productivity and competitiveness of special process house across aerospace and other sectors.

Planning and Scheduling – an Art or a Science? As the first (and only) training organisation accredited by the APMG to deliver their new Project Planning and Control™ (PPC) qualification, Training ByteSize has seen learners questioning the differences and relationships between planning and scheduling in the engineering workspace.

Whilst the distinction should be clear, historical job titles can lead to uncertainty: many expert schedulers, possibly working within sophisticated project support departments, are working under the title of ‘Project Planner’. It is easy to see the confusion – perhaps they should be known as ‘Project Scheduler’? Project planning is not the same thing as scheduling!Planning - considered to be more of an art than a science - determines, amongst other things, what the project is attempting to achieve and the requirements needed to achieve these objectives.

Scheduling - considered to be more of a science than an art - introduces a timeline of activities based on duration estimates, activity dependencies and constraints.

However, it is certainly fair to say that planning may require some science, and scheduling may require some art! Insufficient attention to planning will make scheduling subject to unacceptable levels of change. Inaccurate scheduling could see deliverables not produced in line with agreed requirements, or that progress monitoring will be meaningless.

Aerospace is an industry with one of the most highly trained workforces, and is well-placed to reap the benefits of up-skilling teams in planning, scheduling, monitoring and control.

With the global demand for civil aircraft continuing to grow by 5% year on year, organisations that aspire to keep improving quality – and the tools needed

to achieve it - benefit financially in the short, medium and long term. Training Bytesize would be happy to assist any business in the journey with a PPC qualification scheme, and NWAA members can enjoy significant training discounts.

Island engineering students shine in leading UK competition Three engineering students represented the Isle of Man College of Further & Higher Education at the North West Aerospace Alliance (NWAA) ‘Business University Challenge’ competition in Preston in January.

The competition tested a wide range of skills through challenges ranging from negotiation through to engineering aptitude through the construction of a tower using only pasta and tape!

The Isle of Man team consisted of Daniel Catlow, Ashley Howard & Chris Killey, all of whom work for

Swagelok. This was the first year that a team from the Isle of Man had gained entry to the competition and they performed really well against teams from some of the biggest UK companies such as BAe systems and Rolls Royce.

Ashley received a commendation at the NWAA event for his notable performance and will now be invited, alongside Dan, the current Isle of Man Engineering Apprentice of the Year, to represent the Island at the NWAA Talent Awards in March at the Imperial War Museum in Manchester.

Gail Corrin, Programme Manager for Higher Education at Isle of Man College of Further & Higher Education said:

‘Daniel, Ashley and Chris represented an outstanding group of students currently undertaking a BEng Manufacturing Engineering at the College, in partnership with the University of Chester. We are thrilled but not surprised that they did so well in the NWAA Business University Challenge.

‘ There are many benefits in studying for a degree on island at the College, especially when combined with a high level of employer support as is the case with Swagelok – but it is essential that our students also gain off island experience and prestigious events such as this enable them to do this. Congratulations all round.’

Adrian Moore, Chair of the Isle of Man Aerospace Cluster added:

“It’s very encouraging to see the high levels of performance that our engineering students are achieving. The future is very bright for careers in manufacturing in the Isle of Man with long order books and significant investment being put into developing a new generation of local engineers.”

rIsle of Man forging closer ties with the NorthThe success of the Isle of Man Aerospace Cluster in working with the North West Aerospace Alliance has helped to encourage further engagement between the Isle of Man and the North of England.

Northern England has always been important to the economic wellbeing of the Isle of Man, in addition to our geographical and historical connections and the Isle of Man also contributes tens of millions of pounds to the economy of the North in a variety of ways.

We have key transport links to the North West with the vast majority of our residents travelling to the UK

arriving at either Liverpool or Heysham if travelling by sea, or at Liverpool or Manchester if travelling by air. Although some travel onwards to other destinations, many stay to enjoy the region in a number of ways – to have a weekend break, take in a show or watch a football match for example. This year the Isle of Man’s Government is striving to develop ever closer ties and was well represented at the Northern Powerhouse conference in February.

Minister for Economic Development Laurence Skelly attended the Leaders’ Dinner and Department of Economic Development CEO, Chris Corlett took part in a panel event at the Conference outlining how the Isle of Man can be an effective partner to the region in helping attract new Foreign Direct Investment.

This year the Isle of Man will be very visible across the region but especially in the North West. It will be represented at the International Festival of Business in Liverpool

throughout June and July following the success that it encountered at the last event in 2014.

There are also a wide number of smaller events, hosted by the Isle of Man Government, that are planned for 2016. One of the talking points at these events is bound to be the new Enterprise Development Scheme (EDS). A total of £50 million will be available over a 5 year period to invest in businesses that seek to create jobs on the Island, with funding including grants, loans and equity.

Together with the Isle of Man Aerospace Cluster’s presence at the Farnborough Airshow 2016 as part of the NWAA’s stand, 2016 is looking like a good year to engage with the Isle of Man!

Buck & Hickman “PPE cost savings can be achieved without compromising on protection”With aerospace procurement managers constantly tasked with decreasing spend and finding enhanced value for money, Mark Howarth, Health and Safety Category Manager at Buck & Hickman, looks at best practice surrounding the selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and explains how it is still possible to achieve cost savings while maintaining correct protection for employees.

In a typical manufacturing environment, workers will require a variety of PPE to guard against occupational hazards. Under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at work regulations 1999, it is the employer’s responsibility to not only provide PPE, but to ensure its workers are properly trained in its use – all of which adds up to a considerable but

unavoidable expense, however these costs can be safely reduced.

The first stage in rationalising the use of PPE, with a view to identifying cost saving opportunities, is in the specification of the correct equipment. PPE is frequently over-specified, with the maximum level of protection often selected regardless of the hazard. In reality, what is appropriate in one section of an aerospace manufacturing facility may be excessive or even unnecessary in a lower-risk area.

One of the most frequent reasons given for the non-use of PPE is that they are not compatible with the other protection the user must wear. Incompatible PPE is not only less likely to be worn, with users removing items in frustration creating a safety risk, but may also be more susceptible to damage.

It is important to note that a higher cost is not always indicative of a greater level of protection. Q-Safe, a comprehensive range of PPE exclusive to Buck & Hickman, has achieved CE marking for all its products and is compliant with all relevant European health & safety and quality standards. The range comprises more than 80 different products, covering head, hand, eye, ear and respiratory protection as well as short-life clothing including coveralls, overshoes and

aprons.

Once the correct PPE has been supplied to properly-trained employees, it is important to ensure the continuation of safe working habits. One way to help monitor this is through the use of industrial vending systems, such as Buck & Hickman’s Invend™ service, which provide complete visibility over the use of PPE.

Invend™ is an industrial vending service which can dispense a wide range of industrial consumables including PPE. As well as offering 24 hour access and automatic restocking thanks to an in-built reordering system, its controlled access function means individuals can only access products deemed suitable for their roles. The service not only provides health and safety managers with peace of mind staff are using the correct equipment, but also creates a useful audit trail of issued health & safety items, cutting down on overuse of reusable items and the associated costs.

For further information on Q-Safe, Invend™ or the PPE selection and training services available from Buck & Hickman, please visit www. buckandhickmanuk.com

Aerospace toolmaker moves to PowerMILL to remove programming bottleneckG. Parker Aero Tooling Solutions, a rapidly expanding aerospace toolmaker, has changed to Delcam’s PowerMILL CAM software to remove a programming bottleneck that was limiting the company’s productivity.

The company, which has been based in Accrington for over forty years, produces a wide range of tooling for the aerospace industry. It has been closely involved in designing and manufacturing tooling for many of the world’s most prestigious aircraft programmes, including all Airbus platforms, plus the Eclipse and Honda VLJ programmes.

“We have ten machines, including

several five-axis machining centres, all demanding programs,” said Mr. Parker. “We were experiencing a serious bottleneck with our machining software as we couldn’t supply toolpaths quickly enough.”

Mr. Parker investigated a number of alternative CAM programs before deciding on PowerMILL. The software provided a complete machining package that covers all the bases for the range of projects at G. Parker Aero Tooling Solutions, plus the price was very competitive. In addition, the company was already using Delcam’s PowerINSPECT inspection software and had been impressed with both the software and the support provided.

Even though the staff have only been using PowerMILL for a few months, the effects have been dramatic. “We have effectively doubled our programming capacity with PowerMILL because the software is so much easier to use,” reported Mr. Parker.

“The calculation times are around 25% faster, which, along with the ease of use, means we can generate programs more quickly,” added Craig Cooke, Production Manager. “Stock models are much easier to use in PowerMILL so we are able to reduce air cutting

and shorten machining times with rest machining. The surface finish we get now is very good; it is extremely smooth with no faceting. This has reduced polishing time by an average of 20%.”

The productivity boost from introducing PowerMILL has come at an important time for G. Parker Aero Tooling Solutions. “Business is pretty good,” claimed Mr. Parker. “We already have enough projects lined up to make 2016 a better year than 2015. We have plans to add more five-axis machines as they always seem to be fully booked and we will be recruiting two more apprentices. Extra training is also planned for the existing staff so we are able to take on more projects.”

Versatile Guyson Blast CabinetGuyson International has been manufacturing blast cabinets since 1938 and this latest ‘Euroblast Plus’ variation of their longstanding, premier quality, manual Euroblast® cabinet takes some beating for versatility and features as it is equipped with a variable speed tumble basket, a turntable flush-fitting with the surrounding cabinet floor and dual blast guns that can be operated either separately or together.

Often a customer wants more than a standard blast cabinet configuration and this combination of a manual cabinet for general blast finishing, coupled with the facility to carry out periodic automatic batch deburring or surface finishing of hundreds of small components is a popular request. Thus Guyson has developed the Euroblast Plus, saving customers from having to purchase two separate cabinets and with the added benefit of saving on floor space.

This latest Guyson Euroblast Plus 6SF (Suction Fed) blast cabinet was recently

installed into a French manufacturing company and was chosen specifically because it offered the customer a separate tumble basket allowing for its low volumes of specialist aerospace fasteners to be surface finished for differing times and at variable basket rotational speeds - according to the component coverage required.

When operating in automatic tumble blast mode an internal protective safety guard covers the manual access armholes, to prevent anyone putting their hands inside the blast cabinet when the basket is rotating, and safety interlocks prevent access doors being opened.

A control panel on the back of the cabinet houses all the machine electrics and the variable speed controller, whilst a small separate control panel on the outside of the right hand door houses the basket timer and an Andon beacon - to indicate clearly when the tumble blasting cycle has finished.

This option of a flush fitting turntable, level with the internal floor, allows the customer to manually rotate their components for an even coverage, whilst they are being bead blasted inside the blast chamber. The turntable also makes it much easier for the operator to manoeuver the parts inside the cabinet if these are heavy or too cumbersome on

lThe cabinet is equipped with two Guyson Model 900 blast guns which can be selected, via a lever on the side leg of the cabinet, to be blasting in tandem or individually - depending on blast coverage required whilst using the tumble basket. When using the cabinet as a straightforward manual blast system just one of the blast guns is selected for use and is either held in the operator’s hand or can be placed in a separate gun holder thus allowing both hands free to manipulate components under the blast stream. A trigger-operated air blow-off is also included to remove any residual powder dust from the components after blasting.

Completing this Euroblast Plus blast system configuration is the Guyson C400 cartridge dust collector, equipped with reverse compressed air pulse cleaning of the filters.

For further information about the diverse range of Guyson blast cabinets available or to undertake free component trials on your components please contact Guyson’s Customer Service Department on 01756 799911.

Providing cutting tools for multiple materials and applications is a key focus for Dormer Pramet.

This objective is typified by the company’s range of solid carbide end mills, which are suitable for the most popular operations. This includes slotting, side and face milling, ramping and copy milling in a wide range of materials.

Its S8 and S9 assortments, marketed under the Dormer brand, have for many years provided a reliable and competitive milling option for common applications. The ranges include different shank styles, flute options, cut lengths and surface finishes, including bright and coated alternatives.

Both feature a corner chamfer and modified end teeth geometry for multiple applications and materials.

To support this assortment, Dormer

Pramet has recently added more than 40 new solid carbide cutters. This not only increases the range of applications covered to encompass roughing, super finishing and deep milling, but also includes material specific cutters.

A large share of the new assortment comes from the S2 and S7 milling families.

Dormer’s S7 program further expands the multi-material milling options, while the S2 range extends the support to cover difficult to machine materials.

For example, the S7 cutters bring a differential pitch option, delivering reduced chatter, maximising swarf removal at high feed rates.

It offers a variety of diameters, in short to extra-long lengths, numerous flute options, a range of coatings, as well as roughing profile and corner radii options.

Dormer Pramet recently expanded this range even further with the introduction of the S713 and S716. These new cutters feature square corners to offer the user one tool capable of both roughing and finishing.

The S2 family includes all the benefits of the S7 range, with the addition of a variety of neck options for deep milling and multi-flute options for improved finishing in high strength steels and difficult to machine materials.

A new technology at Thomas Brown Engineering – the Visual FAIR Digital Pen & PaperFirst Article Inspection Reporting has been an important tool within our inspection department for a few years now. It has enhanced and simplified our inspection process and has become an important part of managing our quality and maintaining our AS9100c accreditation on a daily basis. It is now a vital requirement for many of our customers. A recent addition to our Visual FAIR software is a simple but amazingly efficient and accurate Digital Pen & Paper. This is a unique technology which makes the familiar

act of writing First Article results with a pen on paper into a powerful tool which makes data capture more efficient and less susceptible to error.

The Digital Pen & Paper allows our inspectors to manually collect results using the pen onto dimensional forms printed on paper with a unique fingerprint to the specific job at hand. The technology then imports the results directly into the FAIR software via the electronic pen, simultaneously populating any required forms such as AS9102 dimensional reports or batch data collection forms. These dimensional reports can then be tailored to meet any specific customer requirements.

The process is user friendly, efficient and has a built in mistake proofing system which allows the user to check a box for pass or fail. This pass or fail result when analysed by the software is compared to the feature requirement that has been programmed in Visual FAIR. A result that is out of tolerance, but has been checked pass, will automatically be rejected. The system also records the time and date of each

pen stroke thus allowing an accurate record of inspection for each and every component.

We have had good feedback from our customers who have witnessed the technology and seen the benefits it can offer it terms of accurate inspection reporting.
