Mercury• Planet closest to the Sun• Mercury is only a little bigger than Earth’s

Moon.• Egg-shaped ellipse orbit. Year=88 days• Has no moon.• Mercury doesn't have much atmosphere to

block impacts, therefore Mercury has many craters.

• Mercury goes through burning temperatures in the day and freezing temperatures at night (hundreds of degrees below 0)

• 1 day= 176 Earth days. • Mercury has less gravity. If you weighed 70

pounds, you would weigh 27 pounds on Mercury.

Venus• Very hot all the time and has many volcanoes

and mountains.• It has a very thick and poisonous atmosphere

(made up of CO2 and sulphuric acid drops) unlike Mercury, which adds a greenhouse affect which keeps it HOT and insulated.

• About Earth’s size and has a similar structure too. Even its core and gravity is similar to Earth.

• 1 year=225 Earth days; 1 solar day=117 Earth days

• Venus spins quite slow in the opposite direction of most planets

• No moons• It is the brightest planet that has thick clouds

that are forced around the planet by hurricane winds.

Earth• Ocean planet with ample water.• Only planet with life, abundance of life.• Similar density, mass, size, structure, gravity,

volume, and core with Venus.• One moon• Mix of life, water, ice, temperature, seasons,

atmosphere and weather.• Year=365 ¼ days Day=24 hours• Just right temperature for life• Volcanoes, Mountains, Canyons, Valleys,

Rivers and many other geographical features.

Mars• A small, solid, cold desert of a planet.• It has the same amount of land as Earth, but

is half the sized of Earth.• It used to be just like Earth, but since its

magnetic field was too small, it got wiped out by solar wind. It has seasons, canyons, ice caps, and weather just like Earth.

• The atmosphere is too thin so water cannot stay liquid on mars for long, but in ancient times there were floods on Mars. Its surface is iron-rich.

• Its orbit is ellipse.• 1 Day=24 hours 1 Year= 687 days• Mars has less gravity. If you weighed 70

pounds, you would weigh 27 pounds on Mars.

Jupiter-Biggest planet in our solar system

• It is so big that it is like it has a solar system of its own in our solar system.

• It has 50 0fficial moons, 12 unofficial moons, 3 rings, and a huge magnetic field. If it had grown a bit bigger it could have flared up to become a star.

• It has a great red spot which is actually a cloud stripe mad by an enormous storm. It also has 4 very famous moons.

• The atmosphere is made of hydrogen and helium.• 1 Year=about 4333 days 1 day=9 hours 55

minutes• The average temperature is about -153 degrees

Celsius.• If you weighed 70 lbs on the Earth, you would be

185 lbs on Jupiter.

Saturn• Gigantic ball of hydrogen and helium • Rings made of ice and rock• Almost has the same level of gravity as on

Earth. If you weighed 70 lbs on Earth you would weigh 74 lbs on Saturn.

• It is the lightest planet and scientists hypothesize that Saturn would be able to float on water.

• Saturn is wider in the middle and flatter on the top and bottom.

• It is known for its huge rings that are surprisingly thin!

• It has 53 official moons, but only 9 unofficial moons.

• Its average temp. is -184 degrees Celsius.• 1 Day= 10 hr 13 min 1 Year=10,759 days

Uranus• Less gravity than Earth.• It spins on its side. This is because another

planet’s gravity was pulling Uranus’s faraway moon closer to that planet.

• Average temp. is -184 degrees Celsius. It is a very cold gas giant. People believe that its surface is made of ice, that it has a rock-filled core, and that there is a very large and HOT ocean on its surface.

• People also believe that due to all the planetary pressure, there must be trillions of huge diamonds. It is almost identical to Neptune.

• It has rings and 27 moons..• 1 Day= 17 hrs 1 Year=30,684 days

Neptune• Last and smallest gas giant. It’s dark,

blue, and cold.• Its gravity is a little stronger than

Earth’s.• 1 Year= 165 days 1 Day= 16hrs

17min• It is very windy and has a great Dark

Spot which is a massive storm.• It has 6 rings and 13 moons.• Average temp. is -184 degrees Celsius.• It is very similar to Uranus.

Pluto• These days it is classified as a

dwarf planet• In 2015, astronauts will be landing

on Pluto• It has 3 moons• Its average temp. is -234 degrees

Celsius• 1 Day= 6 days 9hrs 1 Year=

60,465 days• If you weighed 70 pounds, you

would weigh 4 pounds on Pluto so the gravity is very little there.

• Charon is its largest moon.
