Dear Friends:

I am honored to present the Planned Parenthood of the Heartland Fiscal Year 2014 Annual Report, which provides an overview of the work we accomplished this past year, and our progress toward achieving the five key strategic goals the board of directors set in 2011.

As you may imagine, this year truly was one of transition at Planned Parenthood of the Heartland. Of particular note:

• The planned retirement of President & CEO Jill June after nearly three decades of untiring, passionate service to all of the Heartland communities in which we operate. • The search for a new chief executive who could take up the reins and help ensure our organization is poised to provide programs and services far into the future. • The launch of the Affordable Care Act (aka “Obamacare”), which gave tens of thousands of individuals across the Heartland access to health insurance – many for the first time.

As we embraced these changes and looked to the future, we also celebrated and honored the work done under the extraordinary leadership of Jill June. Throughout this transition and others – internal changes as well as shifts in the health care and political environments in which we live and operate – your investment in your community meant that 59,989 people received the health care services and education they needed. You and generous donors like you helped us provide $6.3 million in uncompensated care to our patients this year. Another 98,708 people received information and assistance through our education and outreach efforts.

We could not provide all of these programs and services across our four states without your unwavering help. Your gifts of time, money and your ongoing support ensure that Planned Parenthood of the Heartland continues to be here for everyone who needs us – no matter what.

STRATEGIC GOAL #1Provide high-quality reproductive health care services that are relevant and responsive to all populations in need of care.

As the national health care landscape shifted with the introduction of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), PPHeartland faced the challenge of continuing to provide high-quality, affordable health care to uninsured and underinsured individuals while transitioning to a business model that is relevant and responsive to the thousands of patients who now have access to health insurance coverage.

Your generous support allowed us to provide $6,377,947 in uncompensated care this year, which is the amount our affiliate absorbed to provide services to patients who may not have the means to pay for them.

Because of you, Planned Parenthood is here to provide high-quality, nonjudgmental care to everyone who needs it – no matter what.

Patient Financial Status*Some patients do not disclose.**Numbers reported are for Fiscal Year 2014: July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014

In FY14, 59,989 women, men and young people received care at Planned Parenthood health centers across Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska and eastern Oklahoma.

Because half (52%) of our patients are at or below the federal poverty level, many of them received these services solely because of you.

During the enrollment period when the Affordable Care Act first launched in 2013, we found that people needed help at different stages of the process. Some only wanted help in creating an account, while others needed assistance in completing their enrollment and receiving an eligibility determination. Some individuals had a Navigator assist them in selecting a health plan through the Marketplace; others were helped in enrolling in Medicaid. PPHeartland’s five Navigators in Iowa and one Navigator in Oklahoma participated in 216 outreach and enrollment events, reaching 2,087 individuals throughout the enrollment period.

STRATEGIC GOAL #2Be a premier source of human sexuality education and information that is comprehensive, medically accurate, researched-based and culturally diverse.

With a new director of Education and Outreach in place, this year we started developing a comprehensive needs assessment to evaluate reproductive health care and sexuality education needs in Planned Parenthood of the

Heartland’s service area. Our goal is to better understand the health needs and assets of our communities and develop strategies to address identified issues, capacities and strengths.

Ever since the role plays, I’ve been able to be more

Also this year, some of our health educators were trained in various curricula, including Draw the Line/Respect the Line, Teen Outreach Program, Making Proud Choices, Making a Difference, and Wise Guys. These are all multi-session, evidence-based curricula that are proven to be effective in reducing STIs, HIV and/or teen pregnancies.

Looking forward, the Education and Outreach Department will seek to access more of these trainings, as well as expand trainings for other professionals – all of which creates a larger impact in our communities.

Because of you, Planned Parenthood is here to provide medically accurate information – no matter what.

STRATEGIC GOAL #3Lead in securing sexual justice and reproductive rights.

Rapid changes in health care policy on both state and national levels this year required us to think differently about our advocacy and legislative policy efforts. To reflect those shifts, we worked closely with activists, allies, donors and lawmakers throughout the year, preparing them so they could be more effective in their work every day in and for women’s health.

As we adjusted our messaging, strategies and tactics to move

key audiences toward favorable views about our organization and our services, we strengthened our commitment to protect and support policies that benefit women, men and families across the Heartland.

You made your voices heard in the 2014 legislative session – as donors, supporters, activists and volunteers advocating for reproductive rights and sexual justice.

Page 17: Planned Parenthood FY14 Annual Report

16

On your behalf, we:

Helped pass a bill in Arkansas that reauthorized funding for the Private Option, which provides private health insurance plans for individuals below 138 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, using federal Medicaid dollars. The Private Option strengthens coverage for individuals and also saves Arkansas millions in uncompensated care costs.

We also ensured no bills were passed in Iowa or Nebraska that would restrict abortion access or defund Planned Parenthood.

Despite the passage of some bad bills in Oklahoma, we were able to successfully fight other anti-women’s health bills that did not make it through the Oklahoma legislature.

Page 18: Planned Parenthood FY14 Annual Report

17

Regional organizers and highly trained and trusted volunteers in Iowa and Nebraska held conversations with health center visitors who support our mission to determine interest in connecting to our volunteer advocacy network. More than 250 people signed up to be activists through this Health Center Advocacy Program (HCAP).

Our regional organizers also held 111 one-on-one meetings with volunteer prospects, matching their interests and skills with various opportunities to support Planned Parenthood, including at phone banks and talking to participants at public events about the work we do. These new activists and others stand with Planned Parenthood in support of advancing Prevention First policies that improve the health of everyone in our communities.

Because of you, Planned Parenthood is here to protect access to women’s health care – no matter what.

STRATEGIC GOAL #4Attract and retain qualified, diverse staff and volunteers.

With transition comes turnover, and FY14 was a challenging year. Not only was PPHeartland planning for CEO transition, but there was new leadership taking the reins of the Legal, Public Affairs, Education, and Marketing and Communications departments. With these transitions came new energy, new insight, new management perspectives and new direction.

Recruitment and retention of staff for our Health Services department, including front line staff, clinicians, nurses, etc., has continued to be a challenge. With the changing health care field comes a more competitive market for these invaluable positions, and PPHeartland will need to continue to refine its recruitment efforts to create a competitive environment for those staff.

Creating a diverse board and volunteer support network is also a key priority for the organization. In the past 18 months the Operating Board has worked tirelessly to create a strong, cohesive, generative board structure for all boards associated with PPHeartland’s work, allowing for strategic recruitment of board members throughout the affiliate who can respond and react to the organization’s needs.

Because of you, Planned Parenthood is here to support the people of our many communities – no matter what.

STRATEGIC GOAL #5Have a diversified base of revenue that ensures the long-term financial strength of the organization.

We are continually adapting to meet the rapid changes in the health care environment so we can be the most effective organization for the most patients possible. Evaluating our programs, services and processes means understanding the needs

of our patient base and knowing where they are accessing services: increasingly away from the rural areas where many of our health centers are located, particularly in Iowa.

25

FY14 was a year of difficult decisions. We ended the year with a loss of $2,436,390, closing eight health centers and adjusting some of our service offerings and staffing levels across the organization in order to be good stewards of the funds we receive from donors, public grants, patient services and a variety of other sources. We also instituted a high degree of financial accountability – continuously monitoring overhead and administrative costs, and seeking to diversify our revenue sources – to ensure the long-term financial strength of our affiliate.

Thank you for your investment and trust in Planned Parenthood of the Heartland.

Because of you, Planned Parenthood is here to support the people of our many communities – no matter what.

GIFT PLANNING

Your ongoing, generous support helps so many people in your community receive the health care they need. Without you, they may not have access to these services.Thank you for your investment in the work we do.

Planned gifts are yet another way to make an investment in your community – and assure that your values live on. Knowing the importance of the work Planned Parenthood accomplishes in our community, we supported the organization with regular donations for years. Then we asked ourselves, ‘Where would we be without Planned Parenthood of the Heartland?’ Not wanting to find out, we made the decision to become Legacy Society members, leaving a gift in our will.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland is an enduring institution that has demonstrated strength and leadership across the region. We know our gift will help women and families get the quality health care they need, for years to come.
