My two minute opening

Idea of film

• The is film is about a twisted boy who doesn't really fit in with everyone else. After being bullied at school, it sends him on a path of destruction taking out his revenge on anyone that comes across him and the ones who hurt him at school. The ones who manage not to get killed try to survive

Page 3: Planning and research

Setting

• I'm going to film most of the opening in a woodland area. I’m also going to film out on the streets, this is when the boy walks home and gets attack.

• I’m wanting to film in a wood land area, so I can create suspense by using the shadowed overgrow areas to add mystery.

Camera shots

• I’m going to use a wide range of camera shots including close, shot revises shot, match on match action. I will be using the best shot for each action

Dialog

• I will be using dialog so the audience has a clear understanding of what is going on. Also using dialog so the audience knows the relationship between each of the characters.

What Im going to do

• I am doing some research for my coursework which I am going to based on horror films. This will be a 2 minute opening showing that I can use all the different techniques needed to create a successful film opening. To do this I am going to look at the opening of films to gain ideas. Horror films have been dismissed as being violent, low budget movies. As we don’t have finances to cover costs we have chosen to film the start to a horror film.

Page 8: Planning and research

Why I am doing this

• To get a general idea of what horror movies consist of. Also how the evil character in horror movies act, how they carry themselves, how they move and talk.

• Also I’m going to look at the scenery, props used, make up and sound affects.

Make up

Make up is used for different affects, such as in doomsday make up has been used to give the effect of disease in Doomsday. It shows warts on the face very clearly. Blood is also shown on the face of the woman. Faces are made up to look although they are infected. This makes us believe that there is a virus that is spreading. In my film I am going to use blood to show the audience more clearly what is happening.

Prom night

• However prom night which is a teen horror, they don’t use a deformed villain, they use a normal guy that you would pass on the street.

Page 12: Planning and research

Other characters

• Other teen horror movies use a range of masked villains. Scream, Halloween and Friday the 13th. However I think I will have a normal character, so it is more believable.

Props

• The main prop in prom night is the killers knife. In most scenes with the killer its clear to see the knife. Having the knife visible to see when he interacts. Gives the clear link between the murders. So in my film I will make sure that there is a clear distinction between the murders and the killer.

Opening of Doomsday

• The picture of the slide 2 shows a crowd of people walking. It uses the rule of third the writing is to the left of the screen. I like this because it doesn’t interfere what is going on in the picture.

Props in Doomsday

• In the opening of doomsday there is a gun used as a prop. This shows that something is out of control and that the army are trying to control it. In my film I am going to use props to show the difference between the characters e.g. a knife.

Opening of Doomsday

• In doomsday it starts by showing information to the viewers. This shows the people watching that there is something mysterious happening and that people are dying. This leads into the viewers wanting to watch on and see what is happening and why the people are dying.

Opening of Doomsday

• At the start of the film doomsday it also shows a women dying. This links instantly to the deaths that are happening showing the audience immediately what the film is about, but makes viewers wonder why she is dying. This makes the viewers want to watch on to see how the story develops, so in my film I might have a big shock in my opening, so the audience will want to carry on watching.

Dialogue and Plot• The film Doomsday starts with dialogue that says

“like so many epidemics before the loss of so many lives began with a single microscopic organism”. This tells the audience that there is a virus epidemic that’s killing. It also says “spread around the population of Glasgow like a common cold”, “no cure” and “claimed the lives of thousands in the first week”. This explains the storyline and the plot of the film by telling the audience that a virus is killing people. In my film dialogue will not be used as I don’t want to give the audience the plot instantly.

Doomsday scene

• There is a tank used in the scenery that shows the army is there controlling something. There is also a long metal fence with barb wire on top. Both of these things show that something is being controlled and that order is trying to be enforced. This again makes the audience want to know what is being controlled. In my film it will be based in secluded locations e.g. woods and alleys.

Costume • A costume used is camouflage and a gas mask.

This shows that the army is involved and that something has got out of control. This makes the audience want to watch on to find out what is happening, this gives a clear difference between the characters who are in charged and the civilians. In prom night the killer is in normal clothes. This would have the audience guessing who the killer is. In my film the killer is going to be wearing dark clothes to show he's the killer. Casual clothing will be used as it’s based with teenagers.

Sound

• Whilst doing my research I found out most horror films start of with dramatic music. This will create suspense. So in my film I will be using dramatic music. The reasons for this is because I want to hook my audiences straight away.
