Investment Planning

Asian Trend:

• Asian parents tend to sacrifice their own goals, savings & plans

for retirement for the sake of their children’s education & depend

on their support after retirement i.e. are your children your

retirement plan?

Investment Planning

If we only have so much

money, should we throw out

our own goals, savings &

plans for retirement in order

to provide for our children’s

education?

Can we say to our

children, we are paying

for your education now,

so make sure you pay for

us in our old age?

Power of Compounded Investment

• Scenario 1:• Mr. & Mrs. Chan are planning to send their

eldest son to university in the United Kingdom (UK) in 10 years. On hand, they know that the average fees & living expenses will amount to a total of RM350k today. Given an estimated inflation rate of 3% in the UK, they will have had to put aside a total of RM28,636 per year/RM2,432 per month in an investment with an average growth rate of 8% to achieve RM448,029 lump sum in 10 years.

• Scenario 2:

• If Mr. & Mrs. Chan had decided to 20 years in

advance, as opposed to 10, to send their son to

university in the United Kingdom (UK), given the

same variables i.e. average fees & living

expenses will amount to a total of RM350k today,

estimated inflation rate of 3%, they will have had

to put aside a total of RM12,790 per

year/RM1,066 per month in an investment with an

average growth rate of 8% to achieve

RM632,138 lump sum in 20 years.
