Learning There are so many green ways to get to us! You could try the bus, tube, tram or walking. Our site Morden Hall Park sits on the flood plain of the River Wandle with grassland, wetland and woodland habitats. Facilities Our historic Snuff Mill is the base for led sessions, with a learning space, storage for belongings and access to toilets exclusively for school use. Toilet access can also be arranged for self-led groups. Led and self-led groups can also access a dog-free picnic area and play area. Groups can also request to visit the National Trust Garden Centre (which includes the gift shop). Booking All visits to the park must be booked in advance. Our learning programme is very popular so we recommend that you book early to avoid disappointment. All visiting groups are required to complete booking forms, sign indemnity and provide details of their public liability insurance. Led sessions These are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in term time. Half day sessions usually run 10am - 12pm or 12.30pm - 2.30pm. Weekend and twilight sessions (from 4pm) are available on request for after school clubs and uniformed youth groups.

Self-led sessionsSelf-led visits are available to book on all weekdays subject to other park activities. For self-led time in the park groups must have current Education Group Membership.

Health and safety All National Trust sites have been fully risk assessed and we do our best to ensure your group visit is fun, worthwhile and safe. You will receive further information to carry out your own risk assessment when you make a booking. Note that pond and river dipping are currently only permitted on our site when led by National Trust staff.

Child ratios Due to the nature of our site we have specific requirements for all groups visiting to have appropriate adult supervision. The required ratio of adults to young people is 1:4 for Early Years groups; 1:6 for Primary groups and 1:10 for Secondary groups.

Group visitsAll formal group visits by young people to Morden Hall Park must be booked in advance. Self-led groups must have Education Group Membership of the National Trust. This is a prIvately-owned property and we are only able to accommodate a limited number of led and self-led visits each day.

Visit paymentYou can pay for your visit directly to us at the park by cheque in advance of your visit, or we can invoice you for payment to be made directly to our central finance team either before or after your visit.

Investigating two habitats (ScJ-3)

Compare lawn and meadow habitats and use keys to identify the different plants that grow in them. Study plant features and what plants need to be able to grow.

Catch invertebrates from the River Wandle and identify them using keys. Explore how invertebrates are adapted to living in the river and study a chosen invertebrate in more detail.

Investigate different land habitats using keys to identifiy the invertebrates found. Consider the conditions, food and protection each habitat provides.

Study native and non-native plants through a classroom investigation, Garden Centre visit and by looking out in the park. Discuss how plants grow and how adaptations can help them survive.

Use our equipment, suggested lesson plan and worksheets to lead your own river studies session based on our popular Investigating rivers session (GrJ-1). Observe river features such as erosion. Sketch and measure the river at two sites to compare the speed, depth and width.Education Group Membership is required for self-led time in the park.

Investigating human effects on the river (GrJ-3)

Duration: 2 hours When: Available all year Year group(s): 3 - 6

Explore the features and processes of a river through a guided walk, sketching and measuring. Compare the river speed, depth and width at two sites on the River Wandle.

Duration: 2 hoursWhen: Available all year Year group(s): 4 - 6

Compare fast and slow flowing streams of the River Wandle by taking physical measurements and river dipping for invertebrates.

Take part in our interactive role play game and discover how the river food chains work, and the positive and negative impacts people have on the river ecosystem.

Investigate how invertebrates are suited to different river habitats. Discuss river features and compare two parts of the river by measuring and river dipping.

Water power challenge (DtJ-1)

Explore how the park has changed since its days as a country estate. Find clues to its history around the park and Snuff Mill and use historical sources such as maps and photographs.

Duration: 2 hoursWhen: Available all year Year group(s): 1 - 4

Create your own model invertebrate or work with a group to create a larger one. Learn how to re-use household packaging and scrap materials to model.

Duration: 2 hoursWhen: Available all year Year group(s): 3 - 6

Use maps, photographs and the 1891 census to see how the park has changed. Discover what it was like to live and work on Mr Hatfeild’s estate through role-play.

Learn about artist William Morris and how his work was inspired by nature. Sketch out in the park and use your drawing to create a simple print block and print a design.

Discover how water once powered our snuff mills. Design and build your own model water wheel and test it out in our water rig to see if you can generate electricity.

Self-led visits We ask that all students under 18 are accompanied by responsible adults from their school/ college when studying in Morden Hall Park. If you do not require a National Trust leader for your visit you can book a self-led visit and teachers from the school can lead.

Education Group Membership is required for self-led time in the park.

Subject to availability, arrangements can be made for you to borrow/ hire equipment for your visit, and room hire (in the Snuff Mill Learning Centre) is an option for self-led secondary and tertiary classes. Please contact us for further details.

Investigating the freshwater ecosystem (ScS-1)

A river-focussed tour of the park discussing river features and processes, the Wandle’s industrial history, flooding, human impacts and wildlife. Observations are recorded along the way.

Use a variety of different techniques to sample for terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates.

Investigate the impact humans have on the River Wandle by undertaking visual, chemical and biological tests (sampling for river invertbrates).

Self-led visits

Reinforce your classroom work with a self-led visit to Morden Hall Park.

We offer a variety of sessions to complement the National Curriculum.

The recommended time of year to book each session has been suggested. For a full day visit you can choose two different sessions.

Education Group Membership (EGM) is required for all self-led time in the park. Please see our Price guide for details and the class sizes that we are able to accommodate.

Discover the minibeasts that call Morden Hall Park home. Catch some land minibeasts for a closer look and use a key to find their names.

Compare lawn and meadow habitats and use keys to identify the different plants and their features.

Explore where plants grow in Morden Hall Park and what they need for growth. Discover common plants and learn to recognise their parts.

Investigate different land habitats using keys to identifiy the invertebrates found. Consider what each different habitat provides.

Discover the different places invertebrates live on land and why. See how invertebrates are similar and different and how they are grouped. Use simple keys to identify them.

History detectives (YCDI-3)

Duration: 2 hours When: Available all yearYear group(s): 1 and 2

Visit different parts of the park and use clues to find out how it has changed through history.

River studies (YCDJ-3)

Orienteering (YCDJ-4)

Duration: 2 hours When: Available all year Year group(s): 3 - 6

Observe river features such as erosion and deposition. Sketch and measure the River Wandle at two sites to compare speed, depth and width.
