CondensationThe design of condensers for chemical appli-cations requires substantial expertise. Anumber of GEA companies make air-cooledand liquid-cooled condensers of different typesfor a large variety of processes. They include, for instance, tubular and plate-type condensers, spiral condensers and air-cooled condensers.Compact vertical or horizontal units are avail-able for sites where space or height limitationsexist or requirements are imposed by localauthorities. Refrigeration is another processincreasingly used in the chemical industry forcondensation and liquefaction as, for example, for the condensation of refrigerants, chlorine orcarbon dioxide. Pressure vessels designed tointernational standards are also built by GEAfor the storage of gases.
Heating and Heat RecoveryWaste heat from chemical processes is recov-ered by (finned or unfinned) heat exchangersand used for a number of applications. Theseinclude preheating, drying, space heating andsteam raising for process requirements andelectricity generation. Heat recovery systemstherefore reduce overall energy consumption.
FilteringGEA has a complete range of air and gas clean-ing equipment from simple prefilters to high-performance particulate filters of ultra-highefficiency (99.99 %). GEA offers the mostadvanced gas filtering systems available and isamong the world's leaders in the development, design and specification of high-performancemulti-stage systems. GEA provides filteringsystems which retain highly toxic substancesthat would otherwise contaminate the workingenvironment or the atmosphere (see p. 13).

MixingJet and centrifugal mixers are used for the mix-ing of liquids in vessels, tanks and neu-tralization basins. The jet pump principle iseasy to use, reliable and employs no rotatingparts.
AgitationGEA offers a wide range of agitators for all keyoperations in which stirring is required includ-ing homogenization, suspension, dispersion, gassing and heat exchange. Vessels from simpletanks to complex reactors feature customizedagitators designed with the support of a com-prehensive data base. Special agitators havebeen developed to handle combined stirringfunctions. New applications are tested at anadvanced development center. All product dataare logged during testing and processed bysoftware with integrated scale-up routines.
Clarifying, Separating and ExtractingIn liquid processing, centrifugal separators, decanters and membrane filtration systems, often integrated in complete process lines, areused for separation and/or extraction. Theyremove solid impurities, separate and cleaninorganic/organic mixtures (such as water/solvent mixtures or plastic suspensions) andextract solids or liquids. The separation ofspent catalysts from inorganic or organic sol-utions for the production of fatty esters, fattyalcohols, hydrogen peroxide or oil additives isa typical application. Centrifugal separation isa cost-effective technology for separating andwashing liquid mixtures or emulsions inprocesses such as the production of poly-carbonate, nitroaromatics, waxes or esters orfor product extraction.

Distillation and RectificationDistillation and stripping are processes used inthe chemical industry for the recovery of sol-vents or the separation of multi-componentliquid mixtures. Distillation and strippingplants can feature different evaporator designssuch as falling-film evaporators and recircu-lation evaporators combined with packed col-umns, or sieve plate, bubble cap plate or valvetray columns. Rectifying columns are used inalcohol production, solvent mixture separation, ammonia concentration and effluent treatment.Installations are designed using computerizedplant models. Unknown properties are deter-mined at GEA's research and development lab-oratories.
Concentration and CrystallizationLiquids are concentrated to increase solidmatter content and/or to reduce volume byremoving water. Evaporators, freeze concen-tration plants and crystallizers are availablefrom GEA for these applications. The designdepends on the nature of the liquid feedstockwhich can range from solutions to pasty sub-stances. Due to their versatility, simple designand high energy efficiency, evaporators areoften the most cost-effective choice. Wherenecessary, heating, cooling, degassing, crystalli-zation and rectification equipment is added.Freeze concentration is a novel technology forthe concentration of toxic and temperature-sen-sitive substances in a closed system. Freezingproduces pure water ice crystals which areremoved in a wash column. Crystallization is aprocess achieved by concentration, cooling, chemical reaction or freezing. Crystallizers maybe of the continuous or batch type and may fea-ture forced circulation, mechanical or inducedagitation and classification.

DryingSpray drying is one of the most important con-tinuous drying processes for the conversion ofliquid chemicals into powder. The feed is atom-ized and enters a controlled flow of hot air orinert gas. Particles are formed as volatile sub-stances evaporate from the droplets. Depend-ing on plant design and drying conditions, powdered, agglomerated or granulated par-ticles are produced.
Thin-film dryers are equipped with rotatingscrapers which distribute the feed over heatedsurfaces for rapid drying. The thin-film dryingprocess is particularly suitable for dryingpastes and sludges.
HomogenizationHomogenization produces stable emulsionsand dispersions. As particles and droplets arebroken down during the process, the surfacearea is increased, thereby enhancing the chemi-cal reaction efficiency and reducing catalystconsumption. In the oil industry, homo-genization optimizes additive blending andcontrols viscosity.
DegassingGases are removed from liquids more easilyunder vacuum. This is produced by multi-stagejet pumps which evacuate the vessel rapidlyand maintain the necessary vacuum level, while exhausting gas continuously.

CoolingProcess coolers featuring air-cooled heatexchangers are used for cooling a wide rangeof liquids including condensates and oil as wellas for dry or wet/dry closed-cycle recooling. Alarge variety of different customized or modu-lar heat exchangers is available. Special designssuch as shell and tube systems for high pres-sures or viscous fluid operations and a widechoice of tube bundle materials (single-metal orbimetal design) satisfy all process coolingneeds.
In plants in which cooling water consumptionis high, cooling towers can cut cooling waterconsumption by as much as 98%. In corrosiveenvironments, plastic cooling towers are ofteninstalled to avoid corrosion problems. Wet cell-type cooling towers are compact units whichcan be adapted easily to process requirements. While natural-draft cooling towers are normal-ly installed at industrial power stations,induced-draft cooling towers are in most casesthe right choice for the chemical industry sincelow water temperatures are crucial. GEA cool-ing towers can be equipped with plastic fillswhich are resistant to both chemicals and plug-
ging-
Spray coolers are ideal for cooling moltenfeeds. The hot melt is sprayed into cold airwhere it cools to its solidification temperature, forming solid particles. A stable, free-flowingparticulate form is obtained by final cooling ina fluid bed.
Vacuum coolers are often used to cool heavilycontaminated fluids. In the vacuum vessel, theliquid is held at a pressure below its vaporpressure. During the resulting boiling, evap-oration takes place with subsequent liquidcooling due to the heat requirements for vapor-ization. In vacuum cooling, the liquid itself isthe coolant and is cooled directly.

RefrigerationGEA refrigeration systems are used for coolingover a wide range of temperatures in numer-ous chemical and petrochemical processes, including cooling oils and other liquids, thestorage and transportation of acids and otherfluids and for air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, chlorine, methane and natural gas processing.Screw and reciprocating compressor units, thekey components of refrigeration plants, andcomplete refrigeration systems are skid-mounted. Plants of this type are also used forcondensation or crystallization, for separationor recovery purposes. Refrigeration systems arefurther needed to maintain product propertiesor to avoid undesired reactions. They are safeinstallations designed to prevent uncontrolledchemical reactions and pressure generation.Pressure vessels, piping and heat exchangersare designed to internationally recognized stan-dards. Refrigerants used include ammonia, halogenated hydrocarbons and hydrocarbons.Chillers manufactured by GEA use brine(down to - 25°C or even lower temperatures) orwater.

ConcentrationSeparators and decanters are ideal systems forconcentrating, washing and classifying solidsas, for example, in the production of pigmentssuch as barium sulfate, titanium dioxide, cal-cium carbonate or luminescent materials.
DryingContact dryers supplied by GEA include indi-rectly heated paddle and thermal screwdesigns used for drying as well as for heatingand cooling solids.
Flash or pneumatic dryers are systems mainlyfor drying moist powdery, granular and cry-stallized feed materials as well as wet solidsdischarged from centrifuges, rotary filters andfilter presses. The solids are dispersed in ahigh-velocity flow of hot air or gas. Dryingtimes are short. Flash dryers can be combinedwith fluid beds or operated as ring dryers.
Fluid bed drying involves the fluidization ofparticles with air or inert gas. Two conceptsexist based on back-mix and plug-flow process-ing. The choice depends on the fluidizationbehavior of the solid. Solids are moved throughthe fluid bed by fluidization alone or by a com-bination of fluidization and vibration. Heatingpanels immersed in the fluidized materialimprove thermal efficiency and the drying ofheat-sensitive products. Fluid bed systems arealso used for cooling powders, using ambientor dehumidified cold air.
Rotary dryers are established systems for high-capacity heavy-duty drying of non-sticky freeflowing solids. They are also used for calciningand cooling powders.
The vortex disintegrator dryer is designed forfilter cakes, pastes, sludges and fine-grainedmoist powders that cannot be flash-dried effi-ciently. The feed is disintegrated by a high-speed comminutor and dispersed in hot air forinstant drying. Very fine powders are pro-duced.
GEA also supplies air and process gas heatersfor dryers.

Granulation and AgglomerationGranulation and agglomeration produce free-flowing particulates of uniform shape and size. The process used depends on the feed. Spraydryer granulators and agglomerators are idealfor liquid feeds, while fluid bed spray granu-lators and mixer-compactor granulators arebest for powder feeds. High-density granulesrequire mixer-compactor granulators.
CalciningRotary calciners are made for low, medium andhigh temperature applications where long resi-dence times are often required. In the low tomedium range, they may be of the unlineddirect or indirect heating types. Direct-firedrefractory-lined calciners are supplied for hightemperature applications whereas indirectlyheated units are generally used for finer dustymaterials. For low-temperature direct-heatingapplications, fluid bed calciners are marketed.
Powder DedustingPowder products can be dedusted in a tumbler-mixer deduster or a falling-curtain dedustermounted at the inlet of a fluid bed system. Inboth cases, dedusting liquids are used to bindthe fine dust to the larger particles in thepowder.
CoolingGEA supplies fluid bed and contact coolers forsolids and manufactures systems for keepingproducts cool during processing and storage(see also p. 21 on "Warehouse Cooling").

Liquid Effluent TreatmentConcentrators, membrane filtration systems, decanters and dryers are used for the effectivetreatment of waste liquid streams and cleaningeffluents.
Concentration of liquid waste containing eithersoluble or suspended solids is carried out infalling-film, forced-recirculation, and thin-film evaporators, all thermal designs operatingunder vacuum. Evaporative crystallizers aredesigned to reduce inorganic wastes to dry-ness, and to recover chemicals of special com-mercial value. Freeze concentrators operate atfreezing point where ice crystals are formedand removed in special wash columns. Purewater is recovered.
Membrane filtration represents the selectiveseparation processes of desalination, removalor reduction of BOD and pollutants from evap-orator condensate, leach water and effluentscontaining e. g. pesticides, heavy metals, andorganic substances.
A range of decanters is offered for dewateringof waste water sludges.
Spray dryers are used for liquid effluent con-taining soluble or suspended solids. A powderis formed as moisture evaporates from eachdroplet formed during the spraying process. The process is ideal for high-capacity effluenttreatment where the liquid is converted into alow-volume solid which makes disposal mucheasier. Contact dryers such as indirect-heatedpaddle dryers or screw and thin-film dryers aresupplied for wet sludge treatment.
Dewatered sludges and powders are oftenburnt in fluidized-bed incinerators. The resi-due is inert and can be disposed of by dump-ing.
GEA also supplies complete water treatmentplants and sludge dewatering systems.

Natural Gas TreatmentGEA designs, builds and commissions turnkeyplants for the treatment of natural gas includ-ing drying and hot oil stages anywhere in theworld. Plants are also built for the recovery ofliquid petroleum gases (LPG) by an expansionprocess in which the temperature of the naturalgas is reduced to enable the liquefaction of pro-pane and higher hydrocarbons. The instal-lations feature very low inlet pressures andhigh energy efficiency.
Gasoline RemovalTurnkey gasoline removal plants built by GEAreduce the natural gas dewpoint to the leveldesired for transmission. The gasoline is separ-ated from the natural gas by refrigeration.Refrigerants used include, among others, chlorofluorohydrocarbons and propane. Theplants feature condensers, gas coolers, heatexchangers, screw and reciprocating com-pressors driven by motors or gas engines andseparators for gasoline recovery.
LiquefactionGEA is a technology leader in the design ofcomplex liquefaction plants for instance forliquefying ethylene and other process gases.Ethylene vapor enters the plant at atmosphericpressure at a very low temperature. The pres-sure of the vapor is increased by an oil-freecompressor and the vapor is then liquefied in aheat exchanger by the evaporation of the refrig-erant. The plant is designed to internationallyrecognized standards. Chlorine and carbondioxide liquefaction plants are also refrigerant-cycle systems. GEA supplies turnkey systemsincluding the refrigerant cycle, the liquefactionplant and storage tanks incl. all instrumen-tation as well as field assembly and commis-sioning services.
