• Do Now:• Take out your homework, we are starting
notes immediately
Plant Growth and Tropism
What is germination?• When a seed begins to grow.• Usually starts when the seed is exposed to
moisture (when it gets wet).
How does vascular tissue help a plant grow?• Vascular tissue (xylem and phloem) provides
support for the plant, so it can grow tall.
Processing Piece:1) Moss is a plant that grows on rocks and trees. It never grows tall. Do you think moss has vascular tissue? Why or why not?
Processing Piece:2) Vascular tissue (xylem and phloem) carries water and nutrients to all cells of the plant’s body. It also provides support so the plant can grow tall. What TWO systems in the human body have similar functions?
What is a meristem?• The very tip of a plant, where growth happens.• Apical meristem = the top and bottom of the plant• Lateral meristem = tips that branch out to the sides
Processing Piece:Draw a plant. Label the places where you would find the apical meristems and lateral meristems.
What is phototropism?• When a plant grows towards the light
What is gravitropism? • When a plant roots grow down towards gravity, and
the shoot grows up against gravity.
What is thigmotropism? • When a plant
grows along a surface it can climb
Processing Piece• Illustrate the 3 types of tropism.
What is auxin?• A plant hormone • Produced by meristems• Controls growth and tropism in plants
How does auxin control the growth of plants?1. The meristem produces auxin.2. Auxin spreads to the side that has less light.3. Auxin makes cells on that side grow longer.4. The plant bends toward the light.
Processing Piece• Illustrate how auxin makes a plant grow
towards light.
Exit Ticket1. What part of the plant has the same function as
the skeletal system (provides support and helps the plant grow tall)?
2. Name the 3 different types of tropism in plants3. What is auxin?
