Many gardens have suffered extensive damage due to severe weather in the last year. Let the Friends help you renew, refresh and rebuild your landscape at the 17th Annual Plant Sale. A garden is more than a few trees, some shrubs and ground covers – it is a place of sanctuary and pleasure. Our Plant Experts will help you choose a replacement for that tree toppled in the hurricane, the shrubs irreparably damaged by heavy snow and the flowers to grow in a once shady area that has now become sunny. The Friends sale is one of the largest in the area offering thousands of plants, a plant sale page that lists most of the available plants and their growing needs and a pre-sale lecture on Saturday April 14th at 10:00 am (free but registration is required.) Plants may be purchased with cash, checks and for the first time by credit card.

Since gardens are for pleasure, we are focusing on “scent- sational” plants this year. The chill of winter is cast aside by the sweetly fragrant Witch Hazel, Hammamelis mollis. Imagine the heady perfume and snow white flowers of Viburnum carlesii in the April garden to be savored on a warm spring day. Bring back memories of your childhood with the sweet fragrance of Lilacs. In July enjoy the clove like scent of Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia) that will perfume the whole garden. Sprinkle your garden and your containers with the old fashioned fragrances of Nicotiana, Heliotrope, Lavender, Stocks and Carnations. Cover an arbor with Lonicera John Clayton and watch the hummingbirds flock to this wonderfully fragrant vine. These are just some of the fragrant plants available.

This is the year to turn your yard into a garden and your garden into a personal paradise. Sue Acheson Plant Sale Chair

An Art Collectors Garden, EastonThis country estate garden was designed around one of the largest collections of American folk art and out-sider art in the U.S. Enjoy this six-acre hilltop property with two ponds, one drenched in lotus and its own Stonehenge, a reflecting pool garden, a secret garden, dramatic views of the Pennsylvania countryside, a 1700s farmhouse, an Adirondack gazebo, and a terrace garden with potted flowering plants. In the woodland surrounding the estate, large urns burst with flowers and stone slabs lead upward to an arbor. The farm-house and property were featured in Architectural Digest. The property was designed by award-winning landscape architect David Fierabend, owner of Groundswell Design Group in Princeton. Fierabend has won many awards at the Philadelphia Flower Show. The secret garden features formal plantings complementing sculpture and a glass mural. These art-embellished, elaborate gardens were created with an eye for low maintenance, so come learn some tricks to take home.

The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and DIG IT! Magazine, the Art & Science of East Coast Gardening, team up again this spring to bring you another exceptional garden tour. So, sit back and leave the driving to us as you visit two private gardens, (one an icon of American and global horticulture, the other a bastion of American folk and outsider art) shop at a nationally known specialty nursery and lunch in historic downtown Doylestown.

Linden Hill GardensLinden Hill is a nursery specializing in unusual plants and themed display gardens. Visitors can enjoy the gardens, shop for unusual perennials and annuals with a special tour discount of 20%, and shop in the country gift shop. Owner and garden designer Jerry Fritz, who has appeared on the Martha Stewart Show, will greet us.

Lunch in DoylestownFrom the corner of State Street and Main Street, there are many restaurants, cafes and delis within two blocks in any direction. They represent a variety of cuisines and prices for you to choose from.

Fordhook Farm, DoylestownFordhook Farm is the home of W. Atlee Burpee and the birthplace of the Burpee Company. Since 1888, this historical farm has been a world-renowned plant development facility and remains in the forefront of plant trialing and research. Plus, its gardens are gorgeous. You can enjoy a 1-hour tour with the Trials Manager for an overview of all gardens or you wander on your own with a map of the gardens. Fordhook’s gardens include: sun and shade annual/perennial gardens intermixed with sculpture; mixed shrub/grass/ perennial borders; streamside garden; a raised bed potager; gardens with Heronswood plants; trials gardens and fields.
