Now is the time. I don’t have to remind you that the last six years have been tough. Fortunately, the market has improved and the nursery business is growing again. Hopefully you took advantage of the downturn to make your nursery lean and efficient and are now reaping the rewards. Your natural reaction may be to relax and enjoy the good times, but there is a lot of ground to make up before we can do that. I say it’s time to double down and take advantage of today’s expanding market. Don’t be content to sell out early: every customer you turn away is forced to give their business to someone else. Every single order is as important now as it was during the downturn.
The cure for most business problems is higher sales and higher margins. Growing more low profit generic plants won’t turn around our industry. My advice is to grow more Proven Winners, sell more Proven Winners, and watch your profits grow. We’ve done a lot of growing at Spring Meadow in the last year. Just take a look at the aerial shot on the next page for proof. Our office space is bursting at the seams from new hires. I’m proud of how the industry has emerged from the economic downturn stronger and wiser than before, and I hope that your business is also growing as a result. If it isn’t, I challenge you to set a goal to grow 20% in the next year. Make a plan on how you’ll get there, and stick to it. Now is the time to plant. Now is the time to grow your business again. Now is the time to meet the demands of the market. Keep Smiling,

Create a Standing OrderTo ensure you receive the varieties you want each year, create a standing order. We fill these orders first, propagating specifically to meet customers’ requests. You can always adjust your order, so don’t worry about getting stuck with plants you no longer want.
Here are a few tips to ensure your complete satisfaction:
Order EarlyOur catalog is published mid to late summer, and smart growers know to check out the new varieties and order at once (It’s a great time to adjust your standing order, too).
Small OrdersMid-May is the best time for placing a small order because our liners are at their peak. This reduces the potential of backorders.
Confirmation and ShippingWe’ll give you a call about two weeks before your order is shipped. This is the perfect opportunity to make last minute adjustments to your order and to confirm your contact information, delivery address, or any special instructions or directions to the driver.
We grow potted woody ornamental liners. That’s it. No bare-roots. No finished plants. Just healthy, actively growing liners that are ready for you to pot up and grow to finished size. We produce a
variety of liner sizes so you can choose the size that best fits your production cycle.
Welcome to SPRING MEADOW NURSERY
Retailers and Landscapers: please call us at 1-800-633-8859 if you are looking for finished plants of any variety in our catalog. We will put you
in touch with growers who can supply them to you.

Spring Meadow Nursery offers a variety of liner sizes, so that you can better meet the demands of your climate and customers.
Our liners are produced without the use of neonicotinoid pesticides.
Small items and orders of less than 8 trays are shipped via Fed Ex Ground in sturdy cardboard boxes. Each column of plants in the tray of liners is surrounded with a protective cardboard sleeve. Our goal is that your boxes arrive with crisp, clean edges on all sides.
Large orders are shipped on a pallet or specially designed rack.
For LTL shipments, flats are boxed individually, then stacked on a pallet, corner-stabilized, and wrapped with plastic film.
Whole-truck shipments are packed on specially built racks. These sturdy racks can be moved with a forklift or pallet jack.
Our shipping team is committed to providing a positive experience for both you and the liners you order. We pick each order with care and pack it according to the overall size of your order, ensuring a safe shipment for all items, from pots to plants.
We ship by refrigerated truck at 45º F (7.2 C). Transit time depends on distance from Grand Haven, Michigan.

BUDDLEIAHeat-loving, deer-resistant buddleia adds fragrance and wildlife visitors to gardens. But traditional varieties have often been too large to fit into landscapes, and have been invasive in some areas. New breeding has broadened the utility of this genus and made it more environmentally responsible.
No longer confined to the perennial bed or wildlife garden, buddleia may now be used as a colorful mass planting or foundation plant. Continuous blooming dwarf Lo & Behold® butterfly bushes attract butterflies and hummingbirds all season long, yet these non-invasive selections do not set seed in the landscape.

Local isn’t just a buzzword any more – it has become a way of life for people from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon. At farmer’s markets and restaurants, local foods command a premium price, and the same goes for plants, too. Homeowners know that locally grown shrubs are better adapted to their climate, and they want to support businesses in their community and state. Local Roots® is your opportunity to show that these plants were produced with these considerations in mind.
This exclusive program was created especially for our customers who grow and sell regionally. It is designed to give you the flexibility to create a flowering shrub and landscaping program specially tailored to fit your local market. There are over 300 non-branded varieties on the following pages to choose from, including super hardy plants like Mega Mindy® panicle hydrangea and warm climate classics like dwarf Burford holly. Specialty growers can take advantage of niche plants like edible ‘Adams’ elderberry or flashy variegated Cat’s Eye™ kerria. Even landscape staples like ‘Smaragd’ arborvitae and ‘Gro-Lo’ sumac take on a new appeal.
We’ve redesigned the Local Roots tag with an enticing new look and tagline – “Green begins in the garden.” New this year is a matching container in a handsome dark green with a clean, crisp look. Contact your salesperson for pricing information or to add them to your order.
PotsAvailable in one and three gallon sizes and sold in sleeves of 80 or 89 respectively.
TagsSturdy and colorful, these plastic tags provide all the basics consumers need to know to make informed decisions for their landscape. They come with elastic hanging loops and are sold in bundles of 18 or 32 (depending on variety).

Mark your calendar! Our Shrub Madness competition has become an annual event. Shrub Madness is a bit like the annual college basketball championships, but with plants as the competitors. Each March, we seed 64 Proven Winners ColorChoice varieties into a tournament-style bracket. The winner of each match is determined by popular vote from consumers across North America, and goes on to compete in the next round against a new plant, until only two plants remain. The winner is then crowned Shrub Madness National Champion for the year. This fun contest is not only a great way to pass the last dreary month before the season begins in earnest, it’s also a valuable resource for learning first-hand what consumers are most excited about.
After two years of hosting the competition, we’ve found it has challenged some of our assumptions about what consumers want. For example, Let’s Dance Diva hydrangea – a pink lacecap – was the 2014 champion, and made it to the final round in 2015. Of the 16 plants that made it to the 3rd round, one-quarter of them were roses: Oso Easy Paprika, Oso Happy Candy Oh, Oso Easy Lemon Zest, and Oso Easy Mango Salsa, and three of these made it the “Ornamental 8.” In 2015, over 83,000 individual votes were cast, making Shrub Madness a useful planning tool to growers and retailers alike.
Voting in Shrub Madness is open to everyone, so consider hosting a pool with your coworkers and/or customers. The bracket will be made available in January, and the contest opens in prediction mode, enabling you to fill out a bracket with your own predictions, in late February. Voting officially begins on March 1 on our Facebook page (facebook.com/PWColorChoice) and at www.ShrubMadness.com.
For more information or to find out how you can get involved, e-mail [email protected].
“Never in my life have I cared to fill out a sports bracket until now. I love Shrub Madness Plant Playoffs!“
“I want one of everything that is in your Shrub Madness contest!”
“I’m so sad that Shrub Madness is almost over!”

These 257 varieties represent the best flowering shrubs on the market. We know, because we select them through our own internal breeding program and through our relationships with breeders around the world. Before introduction, we trial and test each variety in production, growing, and landscape scenarios to ensure exceptional vigor and beauty. We close the loop by talking directly to consumers through social media and advertising to give them the confidence and knowledge they’ll need to be successful – it’s up to you to supply them!

These appealing vines take the guesswork out of growing clematis and offer unique flower color and form, as well as long bloom times. Fast growing habit ensures more turns and higher profits.
