If the Battle had gone a different way, we could all be speaking English right now!

That’s the running joke circulating the metro area this week as the State and region celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans. It’s a silly joke, but American and Louisiana maps might look much different had the British taken New Orleans. Known as the final battle of the War of 1812, many have questioned its importance: the United States and Great Britain signed the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814, but the Battle of New Orleans was fought from December 23, 1814 to January 8, 1815.

By Terri Sercovich

BATTLE OFNEW ORLEANS

But orders uncovered by local historian, Ron Drez, show that the stakes for the New Orleans and the entire region were very high. The British wanted control of Mississippi River, and had the British won, the Treaty of Ghent would have been thrown out the window. Drez wrote about the spoils of this battle in his new book, The War of 1812: Conflict and Deception: “The New Orleans prize was to be grabbed as the reward of a successful and dramatic military operation. This brilliant British negotiating tactic at Ghent had secured the necessary, legalistic language, and had served up the pitch; it only remained for Pakenham’s army to knock it out of the park.” General Pakenham needed only to take New Orleans after the treaty was signed, but before it was common knowledge and ratified. Then the mouth of the Mississippi River would be in British hands.

Drez disagrees with those who say the American victory was unimportant and unnecessary: “What is there in the documented strategy and tactic not to understand? Revisionists choose to not understand the sequence of these events, because to understand them ruins their argument that the war was already over before the Battle of New Orleans was fought. If the war was not over, then nonsensical proclamations that it was useless, and unnecessary, and the British actually won, all become silly.

“And if the war was not over, what about he question concerning captured possessions? They would not be subject to being returned to the status quo. Revisionists are then confronted with the reality that, having won the negotiating battle at Ghent to bring about the decisive battle the British eventually lost that battle. The war need to be over to deny the result of the final battle and to make face-saving possible.”

But General Andrew Jackson, for whom our Fort Jackson is named, defeated Pakenham so conclusively: British casualties of 2,459: 386 killed, 1,521 wounded, and 552 missing. American casualties of 333: 55 killed, 185 wounded, and 93 missing.

Words to GROW by!Louisiana has its coldest temperatures in January and protection of citrus trees becomes important to homeowners across the state. However, it is difficult to pin point a “thresh-hold” temperature at which it becomes necessary to protect citrus trees. The biggest difficulty in making such a determination is the difference between various citrus species in cold hardiness.

Satsumas, for example, do not need protection until the temperature drops below 25 degrees F. Lemons, limes, and oranges generally need to be protected when the temperature dips below 26 degrees F. However, theses trees can be killed or damaged at higher temperatures if they are not sufficiently hardened with enough pre-conditioning cold temperatures to halt their growth.

The length of time citrus trees are exposed to sub-freezing temperatures is also significant. Exposure to sub-freezing temperatures for more than 24 to 36 hours will harm them. But, if the temperature moderates to above freezing prior to this time, damage is usually very slight.

Three factors which are basically involved in determining freeze susceptibility of citrus trees are:

1) The type and age of the citrus. Satsumas are the most cold hardy of the commonly grown citrus species in Louisiana. Kumquats follow with just a slight less amount of cold hardiness. Citrus increases in hardiness as they get older.

2) Threshold temperatures are approximately 20 degrees for satsumas and kumquats, and about 26 degrees for all other citrus.

3) The duration of the sub-freezing temperature is very significant. If the temperature is below freezing for 24 to 36 hours, damage can usually be expected.

Generally, when freeze injury occurs, damage is inflicted mostly to cell membranes by freezing and thawing. The tenderest tissues of citrus trees are new buds, flowers, and small fruit. The coldest hardy part of the tree is dormant wood. If a citrus tree is gradually exposed to cooler temperatures, a process called hardening occurs and there is a decrease in the freezing point of the plant tissues. Citrus trees are evergreen and never become full dormant, as do trees that lose their leaves (deciduous). Trees that are slightly dormant (pre-conditioned by gradual cold) are less likely to be damaged by cold.

The best way to lessen cold damage to citrus is to maintain healthy trees. Cultural practices that tend to induce and maintain dormancy in winter should be used. These methods include no late summer or fall fertilization or pruning. Vigorous trees may recover from cold injury. Weak trees that are showing disease, insect damage, or nutritional deficiencies are the ones most severely damaged and are the slowest to recover after freezes. Seven steps are suggested to reduce freeze damage:

1) Clean cultivation, mechanically or by herbicides, prior to a freeze susceptible period is recommended. Grass, weeds, and straw mulches prevent heat from entering the soil during the day; therefore, less energy is stored for release at night.

2) Banking the trunks of young trees with soil and using tree wraps of plastic, rubber, Styrofoam, aluminum foil, or rope will help prevent cold damage to trunks, and root systems. This must be done before the first killing freeze. Trunks should be treated with a neutral cooper spray or fungicide before wrapping or banking to prevent foot rot. Although tree tops may still be lost during freezes, a tree can recover if its trunk and root system are intact. Banking or wraps should be removed in the spring to prevent development of Phytophthora (foot rot).

3) Several days in advance of a cold front, the soil beneath citrus trees can be irrigated. Good soil moisture acts as a cold buffer. If this is done at the time the front arrives, evaporation may occur and result in colder temperatures near the tree. In Louisiana, this practice is risky due to intermittent warm periods in winter that may result in flushing (new growth). The new growth can be damaged by subsequent cold. Also associated with cold fronts, larger amounts of rainfall may occur which could cause saturated soils and root pruning.

4) Trees should be pruned in late spring to maximize tree growth and hardening before winter. Cuts should be made at branch crotches, leaving no stubs, and should be treated with water-repellant tree paint. Good leaf canopies should be left to cut wind speed through citrus trees and thus reduce the rate of cooling. Leaves radiate heat to each other. Outer leaves may be lost to a freeze, but complete loss of inner leaves is averted when a thick canopy exists.

5) Fertilizer should be applied to citrus trees in late January or early February. A complete fertilizer 8-8-8 at the rate of two pounds per year of tree age should be used. If using 13-13-13, the rate is 1 1/2 pounds of fertilizer per year of tree age. Spread the fertilizer around the edge of the branches in the area of the feeder roots. Apply a subsequent application of nitrogen when good soil moisture exists in June. Late summer or fall applications of fertilizer stimulate new growth, which is easily killed by cold. Some evidence exists from tests that navel orange trees receiving complete fertilizer (8-12-8) are less susceptible to late winter freezes than are trees receiving only nitrogen as fertilizer or no fertilizer. Also, trees that had been limed to a soil pH of 6.5 suffered more damage than unlimed trees with a pH of 6.

6) Oil sprays used to control insects and mites decrease cold tolerance and should not be used later than August 15.

7) To protect a single tree, some home gardeners have constructed frames over trees and encases the tree in translucent plastic with one or two layers. In our areas, such an extreme practice would be needed only on a few severely cold nights and cloudy days. Incandescent light bulbs can raise the temperature in the frame a few degrees. Fresh air is a must for such frames, and air temperatures within should not be allowed to go above 85 degrees to 90 degrees F. Venting should be provided to make it easy to maintain a constant supply of fresh air and to control temperature. Care should be taken to prevent the bulb from coming in contact with the plastic wrap.

WHEN TO PROTECT CITRUS FROM THE WINTER’S COLD The Southeastern Conference took it on the chin this

postseason, with once proud teams reeling from blowouts and match ups with opponents that had more desire to win than they did. The four western division teams ranked at one time first, second, third and fourth were overwhelmed by their opponents in the second half and in some cases, the entire game. Ole Miss looked real old and like a real miss when they fell to TCU, 42 to 3.

The Black Bear Rebels had a great defense through mid-October but its been AWOL since. Mississippi State had a mediocre second half of the year and lost 49 to 34 to a reinvigorated Georgia Tech team as the Bulldogs also had a mediocre second half of football against the Yellow Jackets. Auburn lost to a Wisconsin team that had been the SEC’s patsy for the longest time and in the big news, the Always Entitled Crimson Tide got rolled real good by an Urban Meyer-led

Ohio State Buckeye team that is probably the best squad ever assembled in Columbus, 42 to 35. Lots of ‘Bama boys got physically whacked in this one, played in the Superdome where they embarrassed LSU just three years ago. The late and postseasons may not be the panacea that

Tide fans want, following the two shockers that ended 2013’s season along with this New Year’s Days’ disaster.

Now the two “O” teams - the Oregon Ducks and the Ohio State Buckeyes - will duke it out for a national title in a little less than a week. Both teams deserved this matchup and the Ducks will be a slight favorite for three important reasons: Marcus Mariota, the incredible speed of their offense and most importantly, the coming of age of their offensive and defensive line physicality. I like the Ducks and their slightly obscene hand logo to best the Buckeyes, 45 to 35, sending Urban Meyers backstage with another fast food meal and scratching his head on how to stop a runaway freight train. It’s ironic that the SEC is now adopting the spread offense, option quarterbacks and a hurry-up offense while the other conferences are finding the big, nasty studs to man their offensive and defensive lines.

What - no mention of LSU today? Wow. Nice contract negotiation job on former Defensive Coordinator John “Chief” Chavis, Tigers. Kind of like the shaft job the Board did on Charlie Mack some 35 years ago. Now the Tigers must not only find a real SEC quarterback and a real 21st century SEC offensive coordinator (Cam Who?), but replace a man whose only real fault was recruiting undersized linebackers whose speed and quickness rarely overcame their lack of back-busting tackling (Kwon Alexander being the lone exception). Maybe the new guy will recruit more Kendall Beckwith, Kevin Minter, Lamin Barrow-type ‘backers with 240 or more pounds and a nasty, ‘Bama-type attitude. While Alabama recruits the Reggie Raglands of the world, LSU settles for too many dishRags at this vital position.

I see one local New Orleans sportswriter has LSU going 11-1 in 2015 with a win over Georgia (who else) in the SEC Championship game and a place in the four-team championship with Ohio State, USC and Notre Dame. I want whatever he’s smoking. LSU needs offensive linemen, quarterbacks, defensive ends, big linebackers and a totally new offensive coaching and recruiting philosophy. They are much closer to another 8 and 5 season than 12 and 1 and that’s only if Brandon Harris grows up or if Anthony Jennings is blessed by a miracle. Otherwise, it’s business as usual in Tigertown with a frustrated Leonard Fournette, some talented but ignored wideouts and tight ends and a pretty solid defensive tackle and secondary outlook for 2015. The kicking game is suddenly suspect and the head coaching position remains in that mode for yet another year. Maybe Miles can bring his son in to become the latest in a series of underperforming to mediocre quarterbacks that have worn the purple and gold for the past ten years.

Meanwhile, the SEC isn’t going down too far. There are too many good coaches in the league and now the league realizes it must continue to change to keep that competitive edge. Now that Michigan has its savior (“who’s got it better than us! NOOOOOO….BODY!!!” {except Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan State….}, Miles Maniacs can rest easy knowing their man will remain in Baton Rouge for the foreseeable future, bringing smiles to the faces of coaches such as Nick Saban and Gus Malzain. For if maintaining a “B” average in the SEC is all we want to settle for, then we’ve got it until the last Miles child leaves the nest. Me, I’d rather ride the roller coaster than the kiddie’s carousel because there’s a chance you’ll get a real rush on the former.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOMContinued to page 7

I was in Texas heading home and had a call for an inshore trip. Before I got home it turned into an offshore trip. Had to search very hard to find a last minute deck hand. Had a flat tire at 5:00 in the morning 3 miles from the marina. Got there and deck hand and customers were a bit behind. The winds were calm at 5:00 but they were blowing at 17 mph where I was heading. Forecast was for a front to come through in the afternoon but conditions looked like the front was here early. This whole trip was not starting off good. We ran into a bit of fog at the head of passes but not thick. As soon as we hit the gulf it was bouncy. About 6 miles out we were doing 24 mph. Eased my way to my furthest

destination. Made one troll around a rig on the way and nothing impressive on the screen so kept going. Almost too rough to troll. Took a one over the bow of the Glacier Bay.

One of my buddies was already at at my chosen rig. He got nothing on the troll but one blackfin on the chunk. We went right to chunking. Marked nothing on the drifts but under these conditions I had no other choices. A third boat shows up and he gets a Jack Crevalle on his first drift. The first boat there leaves. After 6 sharks I gave up on that place. Went to a nearby rig heading in. Trolled it and on the second pass get one on. It fought like a blackfin but turned out to be a Jack.

To be continued. Got called for a trip.

I thought this was going to be my last trip of the year but an early morning call had me stop writing and back on the water again. This is the rest of yesterdays trip.

Got a call from the place I just left and he said the bite may be starting. I took a pounding but headed back out there. I got a small piece of red meat from him and set up a drift. First drift and we have a tuna on. It did not fight like a shark at all. I was soon putting the gaff in a good sized blackfin tuna. We were on the board at last. In this picture you can see how the line rubbed him as he was diving to get away.

Fourteen juvenile whooping cranes were released into the wild on Dec. 30, 2014, at White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area (WCA) in Gueydan. The juvenile cranes join 26 adults that are part of an experimental population being monitored by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF).

The cranes were delivered to southwest Louisiana on Dec. 4 from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, Md. LDWF is working cooperatively with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, USGS, the Louisiana Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the International Crane Foundation to establish a non-migratory population in the state.

The whooping crane is protected under the federal Endangered Species and Migratory Bird Treaty Acts and by state law. Anyone encountering a whooping crane is advised to observe

the bird from a distance.

Whooping cranes are large-bodied, white birds similar to white ibis, white pelicans, and wood storks, all of which must be distinguished from legally-hunted snow geese. However, a red head and black facial markings along with a height of five feet and a wingspan of 7-8 feet make them very distinctive. In flight, whooping cranes display black wing tips and fully extended neck and legs, which extend well beyond the tail.

Juvenile whooping cranes are primarily white with some cinnamon-brown feathers remaining on their body, primarily on their head and neck. Their wing tips are black like an adult, but they lack the red head.

Anyone witnessing suspicious activity involving whooping cranes is advised to report that information to LDWF’s Enforcement Division by calling 1-800-442-2511 or using the tip411 program, which may offer a cash reward for information leading to arrests or convictions. To use the tip411 program, citizens can text LADWF and their tip to 847411 or download the “LADWF Tips” iPhone app from the Apple iTunes store free of charge.

The fishing is so good we can’t even get the reports inon time this issue! Go fish!

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. Well, a new year has arrived and the temperatures have dropped. However, the fishing in South Plaquemines remains as hot as an August day at noon. Fronts still keep pushing through, keeping water levels very low, but all that does is stack up the fish. Redfish are piled up on both sides of the river in all dead ends of pipelines and canals. Best baits have been Berkley Gulp! or market shrimp on a 3/8th ounce jig head. Best advise I can give is fish all intersections and in the middle of the canals while temperatures are low and as the day warms up, use a cork to work the shorelines as the temperature rises. This will also give you a chance to put some specks in the box along with your reds. I hope you and your families have a wonderful 2015. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. I thought things were looking up but it took about an hour before we had another bite. This one was also a blackfin. We were almost out of red meat bait when my deckhand lands a bonito about a foot long. I was able to make 4 small baits out of it. We had 3 blackfin in the box and we had 2 baits left. “One last drift”. Win, loose or draw we are done. Time to get out of these rough seas. One of the lines goes off with a rod bending, drag burning run. This looks like a good yellowfin. The woman came on the boat with a bad back but so far today she landed every fish. We gave this to her husband. When it made the second run he tagged out. She jumped on it but her back was done and she had to tag out also. I let the deckhand finish it. He loved the chance to fight

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOMContinued from page 6

a yellowfin.

It was not a monster but just big enough to put smiles on everybody’s face. In a win, loose, or

draw situation; we won.

Once we get the fish iced down well we get things on the boat ready for the run into state waters. Fortunately I had a good angle on the seas so we had a (fairly) good run back. When I got in state waters the winds and waves were still nasty and we had a tough time hooking up to the rig.

Our first bait in the water gets hit right away and we are 3 fish from finishing the day.

By this time I have a second line set up and we drop 2 down at once. Both lines get hit instantly. The first one comes in with a fight an we have another good red snapper but the third fish is fighting a lot harder. It is not unusual for blackfin to be caught here in the winter so that was what I was thinking. When it came to the top I was

surprised. Our double was a keeper and a throw back. Although legal size Amberjack does not open till January 1st.

After a photo op it went back. Our third red snapper came on the next drop and our fourth was on at the same time but broke off. 3 drops and almost limited out on red snapper. We fed a few and lost some in the rig. Our last one was being difficult. As soon as we got our limit we were all ready to head in. The winds were still honking and the temp had dropped 15 to 20 degrees or it at least it felt like that.

Ended up a good day. 3 boats went offshore and I had the best catch. Unfortunately Eddie came in with the only wahoo so I did not fair well there but I brought in the only yellowfin of the day and that made up for it. Nice way to finish the season.

Happy New Year to all!

Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

Here we are in the beginning on 2015! The anticipation of the coming year with it’s many wonders or disappointments it will bring is looming out there in front of us. What will we achieve in this coming year? What wonderful creations will we come up with out of necessity? Well, that is what this column is all about. The creation of something special out of necessity.

It seems as though Santa was very generous this year. He brought Carlea’ all three of the dolls she just couldn’t live without. Of course she was very excited when she woke up Christmas morning and under her Christmas tree there was her “Twin” doll and her Infant doll (I can’t remember the name). Than when she came over to visit with us, low and behold, there was her “American Girl” doll! Her excitement was contagious! And she had everything worked out. The dolls, all 3 of them would sleep with her. Well, that worked okay for the first few nights. But than, it seemed as though “her girls” were pushing her out of bed. They needed their own beds! We decided to see how she would handle this. That did not take her long at all. She decided to take the bottoms of the boxes the dolls came in and make them into bunk beds. She planned everything out and just needed her Poppa to help her with the hot glue gun and holding the posts in place til they cooled. She made designs on the side of the boxes with the markers that her brother, Dion, gave her for Christmas. She worked very hard on her designs and even put the dolls names on the beds. Sorry I didn’t get a picture of that. I am very proud to say this is her very own creation! And she has informed me that this coming weekend we need to break out the sewing machine and make a couple mattresses, pillows, and covers for the older girls, the infant can still sleep with her.

Guess, it really doesn’t matter how old or young you are, when the need for something is there, you can always figure out a way to create it. I am very anxious to see what she “needs” next and how she will solve the situation.

Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next craft project be? Mine.......I really don’t know. Maybe........Carlea’ will figure it out first. But, either way, there’s one thing for sure, It will be fun!

Youth Fitness & Wellness

Kids become phys ica l ly s t r o n g e r, h a v e m o r e endurance, and experience a sense of joy and fun through play by participating in YMCA Youth Fitness and Wellness Programs. Youth establish meaningful relationships and a supportive community of friends, which encourages a sustained commitment to health and fosters a sense of achievement and heightened self-confidence. Kids in YMCA Youth Fitness and Wellness Programs are in charge of their own physical fitness and well-being, and they know how to make healthy choices that last throughout a lifetime.

National YMCA survey finds more than half of American adults say outside support can help keep their 2015 resolutions

Each year, millions of Americans resolve to get in better shape and become healthier versions of themselves. According to a recent YMCA survey of more than 1,000 adults, less than a quarter of respondents kept their resolution in 2014. An overwhelming 71 percent said they tried but fell short, and 40 percent confessed that they made it through only a couple of weeks or months.

However, there’s hope for the coming year. One-third of survey respondents who plan to make a resolution in 2015 believe they’ll stick to it and reach their goals, with more than half believing that encouragement from others will keep them committed.

“Finding a supportive community like the Y can be beneficial in keeping resolutions on track, because our organization is so much more than a nonprofit gym,” said Gordon Wadge, CEO, YMCA of Greater New Orleans. “It’s a community of supportive neighbors that offers

more health, more hope and more opportunity for the New Year and years to come.”

A positive outlook doesn’t always translate to action unless without setting manageable goals and leaning on the support of health and wellness communities. Here are five tips the our Y’s recommends to help make a healthy New Year’s resolution stick:

1. Start small. Set attainable resolutions. For example, if your goal is to exercise more frequently in the New Year, don’t schedule seven days a week at the gym. Start with a reasonable three days a week. If you’d like to eat healthier, try replacing desserts with other foods you enjoy, such as fruit or yogurt.

2. Take it one step at a time. Making a New Year’s resolution doesn’t require you to reassess every little detail of your life. Replacing unhealthy behaviors with healthy ones takes time, so don’t become overwhelmed. Work to change one behavior at a time, and then go from there.

3. Choose a facility that focuses on a holistic approach to health. When it comes to adding healthy behaviors – like working out – to your lifestyle, finding a facility that keeps you motivated is critical to maintaining your exercise routine. Before committing to a membership, take a tour of local gyms to find the best fit for you. Your facility should not be just a gym, but a community organization that offers more health, more hope and more opportunity.

4. Establish a little friendly competition. More than half of the Y survey respondents felt a little “healthy competition” when friends encouraged them to be even more committed to keeping their New Year’s resolutions. Share your experiences with support groups – friends, family, fellow workout class members or close colleagues. Talking about your struggles and successes will make your goals more obtainable and less intimidating.

5. Set New Year’s goals with someone you love. It’s easier to stick to your resolutions if you have a partner working toward similar goals. More than three-fourths of survey respondents indicated that they would set the same resolution for a member of their immediate family. Team up with a family member to set your 2015 goals, and establish a game plan that is dedicated to achieving them.
