Advantages of Plastic…Advantages of Plastic…

Very useful in construction, electronics, packaging, and transportation industries

Comes from natural sources

Strong, lightweight, odorless, and cheap

Can be reused and stored, unlike aluminum

Disadvantages of Plastic…Disadvantages of Plastic…

Indestructible

Produced from oil, a resource that is running out

Creates pollution when melted

Accumulates in oceans, killing animals and damaging the planet

Clogs roadside drains, which could cause the flooding of the street at heavy rainfalls

Every bit of plastic ever made still exists, with very few exceptions; only 3-5% is recycled and a small amount is incinerated. More than a million seabirds, 100,000 marine mammals, and countless fish die in the North Pacific each year, either from mistakenly eating plastic pollution or from being caught in it and drowning. Plastics are not biodegradable; they actually resist biodegradation, but will crumble into smaller particles from exposure to sunlight and the elements. The small plastic particles resemble food to sea animals, and the results are tragic.

How does plastic harm the environment?

How does plastic harm the environment?

Plastic is one of the major toxic pollutants of our time. Being a non-biodegradable substance, it fills our earth and never decomposes. It also pollutes the earth, air and water. Some of the constituents of plastic such as benzene and vinyl chloride are known to cause cancer. Many others are gases and liquid hydrocarbons that destroy the earth and air. Plastic resins are flammable and have contributed considerably to several accidents worldwide. Recycling of plastic is associated with skin and respiratory problems, resulting from exposure to and inhalation of toxic fumes, especially hydrocarbons and residues released during the plastic making process. What is worse, the recycled plastic degrades in quality and necessitates the production of more new plastic to make the original product.

Next time you are about to throw away plastic materials, think for a minute.

Could you reuse what is in your hand? If everyone contributes a bit of help

towards this issue, we can make the planet better for our children and

generations to come.
