More than a million seabirds, 100,000 marine mammals, and countless fish die in the North Pacific each year, either from mistakenly eating plastic pollution or from being caught in it and drowning. Plastics are not biodegradable; they actually resist biodegradation, but will crumble into smaller particles from exposure to sunlight and the elements. The small plastic particles resemble food to sea animals, and the results are tragic.

Recycling of plastic is associated with skin and respiratory problems, resulting from exposure to and inhalation of toxic fumes, especially hydrocarbons and residues released during the plastic making process. What is worse, the recycled plastic degrades in quality and necessitates the production of more new plastic to make the original product.
