WORKSHOP SUMMARY

Wednesday 21st February to Friday 23rd February

Candidate GCRF Plastics In Society Research & Innovation Hub Workshop Summary, 21 – 23 February 2018

Our Vision

Plastics in a Sustainable Society

Providing Nourishment and Protection of the Environment, Good Health and Wellbeing for People & Communities, & Sustainable Production and Consumption of Plastic

1.0 Workshop Purpose The purpose of this workshop was to establish research and innovation relationships with academics and wider stakeholders, and to co-create the Hub’s work programme. The workshop had a specific focus on the co-design of two of the Work Packages (WPs):

a) monitoring of atmospheric microplastics and their human health risks (WP3), and b) Designing and testing interventions (WP5)

2.0 Workshop Attendees There were over 45 participants at this workshop on the first day, many of whom also attended days 2 and 3. The Principle Investigator, Professor Susan Jobling and three UK partners travelled to Indonesia for the Workshop. International Research, Industry and NGO partners joined from India and Thailand. At least 35 Research, Government, Industry and NGO partners attended the workshop from across Indonesia. Four of the UK Work Package leads joined the workshop by Skype at a key point to engage with partners and answer their questions. The attendee list is included as Appendix 1. 3.0 Workshop Overview and Presentations The workshop was officially opened by Prof.Dr.Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, the Vice Director for International Relations, ITB, who welcomed the international guests and new partners to ITB. Professor Susan Jobling then introduced the candidate GCRF Plastics In Society Research & Innovation Hub to all attendees. Professor Jobling also thanked all partners for their support with the GCRF bid at the outline stage and announced that the proposal had been shortlisted amongst the last 52 proposals asking for funding. The team are now tasked with detailing our research and innovation programme with local stakeholders from multiple sectors and with gathering further leveraged support for our activities before we submit the final more detailed proposal in May. She highlighted that the hard work needed to start now.

Candidate GCRF Plastics In Society Research & Innovation Hub Workshop Summary, 21 – 23 February 2018 Professor Jobling presented the geographical focus on the Indian Ocean and highlighted that initially the Hub would work with partners in Indonesia, India, South Africa, Thailand, Malaysia, Mauritius and Australia. The ambition is for the Hub to tackle the ‘intractable challenges of plastics in society’ in the Indian Ocean countries first, followed by knowledge transfer and replication across the world. 3.1 Work Package Presentations Each UK Work Package lead created a presentation for the workshop which gave an overview of the proposed activities based on previous engagement, and asked for partners to help with co-creating the detailed proposals. The Work Package titles and leads are provided in the following table, along with how the presentations were delivered.

The senior Government representatives each presented on their work areas that are relevant to the Plastics In Society challenges. The presentations are listed below and are available from the associated links for download: Combating Marine Plastic Debris Through National Plan of Actions – Indonesian Approach Dr Nani Hendiarti, Director of Maritime Science and Technology https://drive.google.com/open?id=1DKvv3Dlb7MlTDjVTdEIj7aYAQceF4Fc0 Plastics – Health Impacts and Health Policies Iwan Nefawan, Directorate of Environmental Health https://drive.google.com/open?id=1rsTpQzzIh2IyVd9jMpwcbVnuDqOFfXWY

The National Plastic Industry in Indonesia Dr Andriati, Ministry of Industry https://drive.google.com/open?id=18q-5HkG4iYvRmOZlcnzy6H6zDOn89Myu These presentations and the follow up discussions gave an excellent overview of the Indonesian challenges and how the Government and actors are seeking to respond. The presentations prepared the way for the following group co-creation sessions.

Candidate GCRF Plastics In Society Research & Innovation Hub Workshop Summary, 21 – 23 February 2018 4.0 Group Working The bulk of the workshop time was spent in group discussions following co-design methodologies to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges with Plastics in Society and potential research and impact actions. These didcussions are not summarised here as they are being used for the full bid preparation and are therefore confidential. The following image illustrates one of these sessions.

5.0 Skype with UK WP Leads Following the group work, the UK WP Leads joined a series of skype calls to engage with participants and answer questions.

Candidate GCRF Plastics In Society Research & Innovation Hub Workshop Summary, 21 – 23 February 2018 6.0 Workshop Outcomes The workshop delivered a range of outcomes at the strategic and work package levels for the Hub. At the strategic level these outcomes include:

• Agreement for ITB to be the Hub lead for Indonesia • Securing strong links and information sharing with the Indonesian Government • Expanding mutual understanding with the SYSTEMIQ project STOP which will provide

research and impact opportunities in Indonesia • Building stronger links with IISc Bangalore as international leads for WP5

Post workshop dinner with Indonesian Ministry partners. At the Operational Level these outcomes include:

• Gaining a clear understanding of Indonesian partners capabilities • Agreement on potential sites for ‘Living laboratories’ • Meeting and building relationships with Research and industry partners • Co-designing WPs 3 and 5 in significant detail

7.0 Next Steps and Actions Based on the workshop and the detailed discussions which took place the next steps include;

• Confirming the Hub leads for all partner countries • Confirming that we have the right research partners involved for each Work package • Confirming the International WP leads to work closest with the UK WP leads • Carrying out a more detailed stakeholder analysis for each country to ensure that

patchways to impact are clear and that the impacts will be measurable • Further increasing the knowledge of the local factors and contexts which affect

Plastics in Society

Candidate GCRF Plastics In Society Research & Innovation Hub Workshop Summary, 21 – 23 February 2018

• Further increasing the knowledge of the existing research and action initiatives underway so that the Hub can add value rather than duplicate

• When all partners are confirmed then formal letters of support will be needed along with appropriate CVs for all Co-Investigators

The workshop was seen as a huge success and one which sets the foundations for effective partnerships in delivering the GCRF Plastics in Society Research & Innovation Hub. The workshop was publicised and captured on social media and some of this activity is available as a storyify: https://storify.com/AlpSynergy/plastics-in-society-research-innovation-hub For further details on this workshop or if you have problems accessing the materials please get in touch with Ant Parsons, [email protected]
