Tribes of the Plateau

-Flathead, Nez Perce, Paiute, Shoshone, Spokane, Yakima

This is the Nez Perce This is the Shoshone Tribe

Foods in the Plateau Salmon, squirrel, buffalo, sheep, antelope,

berries, nuts, seeds, turnips, rabbits, rodents were all part of the Plateau tribes food pyramid

These foods were eaten because they were easy to access and were in there region/hunting territory

Clothing of the Plateau

Typical women clothing in this region for women were Skirts, and hats.Young boys usually went naked.Men would were moccasins and animal skin leggings.They would also were necklaces and all would pierce their ears.

Homes of the Plateau

Typical homes in the Plateau regions were tepees which were mainly made out of buffalo hide. Tribe members would also make cone shaped homes made from brush grass and cone shaped huts made from bark walls.

Native American Religions

The Plateau religion felt a deep spiritual tie to the earth. They lived in harmony with nature and were closely related with each other. Each member of the tribe had a spiritual guardian called a Wyakin that protected the person and gave them help. In honor of there guardian tribe members would carry small bundles of materials that represented their Wyakin. Today the plateau native Americans have adopted the Christianity religion.

Tradition or Ceremony of the Plateau

These native Americans did a number of ceremonial dances some of them were the round dance (was done when food was plentiful) the father dance ( honored creator and asked for good health) and the sun dance (done after a buffalo hunt)

Arts/Crafts of the Plateau Each tribe within the Plateau region has their

own artistic traditions.The Shoshone would participate in elk and buffalo hide painting to record tribal history they also used this for leather

Washakie of the Shoshone Tribe

Washakie was the chief of the eastern Shoshone. He is famous for signing the Treaty of Fort Bridger in 1863.

This region had a very loosely organized government They used plants, charms, and chants to cure

illnesses Has 4,500 Shoshone tribal members as of the

1990 One of the tribes in the Plateau is the Nez

Perce which means pierced nose Shaman were believed to have miraculous

powers
