The Leboeng SAPS Visible Policing commander, Warrant Officer Segabutla visited thecommunity of Leboeng, Makgwareng village, after a number of cases of electric cabletheft had been reported in this area in a short time. The cases are a concern to the Policebecause ten out of twelve cases are at vacant premises. Warrant Officer Segabutlaaddressed the community and told them to work with the Police to eradicate theft ofelectric cable. He further started street committees to work with the Police to patrol theirarea during the night and to report any suspicious vehicles and people in their area,especially during night times.

The robust interaction that characterizes therelationship between mines, employees,benefactors, contractors and communities inthe area continued this week when GreaterTubatse Municipality Mayor, CouncillorRalepane Mamekoa called a meetingbetween Anglo American Platinum’sTwickenham Platinum Mine Project’smanagement, the Community EngagementForum (CEF) and the Twickenham LocalBusiness Committee (TLBC).

According to the Secretary of the CEF,Mr Abednigo Mashabela, the meeting wascalled after allegations by sections in thecommunity that engagement betweencommunities in the vicinity of the project andTwickenham’s management does not exist.

Mr Mashabela said amongst other thingsthe local municipality told the mine that acommunity meeting held on 03 November2014 by the Twickenham CombinedCommunities said the DRUTA TaxiAssociation and Roka Mashabela TraditionalAuthority is the part of the concerned group.Kgoshi (chief) Mashabela, N W, told theMayor’s meeting on Tuesday that he isdisputing the allegations and the taxiassociation also denied the issues raised bythe local municipality, saying they will takethe matter further to their executivecommittee meeting.

Then the majority representatives whowere in the meeting from nine affectedtraditional authorities agreed that theinformation the local municipality acted uponwas not true and that facts should beverified before similar meetings are called.

Dwarsrivier MinePutting the spotlight on

the disabled in TCMRecognizing that many people withdisabilities are very able people with skillsthat can be utilized to benefit society wasone of the main themes at a day of focuson the disabled in Thaba ChweuMunicipality last week.On 27 November various stakeholdersjoined forces with Dwarsrivier Mine, ThabaChweu Municipality, EhlanzeniMunicipality, SASSA and the Office of thePremier to bring together disabled peoplefrom all over the municipality.

Various organizationsworking for the benefit ofdisabled people wererepresented. These includedEpilepsy SA, Mental HealthOrganizations, DPSA,Estralita School and manyothers.Estralita’s school choir gavethe event some rhythm

while the school also showcased some ofthe hat making, beading and woodworkskills learners acquire at the school. Theyalso appealed to employers to give theirlearners an opportunity once they leaveschool, as they are very disciplined and wellskilled once they leave school.Mr. Pius Monyela (left) from DwarsrivierMine told the audience that the minerecognizes the valuable contribution peoplewith disabilities can still make to society.That is why they support days such as thesethat bring people in contact withorganizations that can assist them and helpempower them.

Wheelchairs and other gifts where handed out to some of the disabled peopleattending the function. The day ended as a networking function with a warm lunchbeing served while people got to know each other and the various organisations thatcan assist them better.

Leboeng joins together foractivism against abuse

On 27 November the Leboeng SAPS, SocialDevelopment, VEP and the PraktiseerSubstance Abuse unit visited LeboengGankoana village.The event focused on 16 Days of ActivismAgainst Women and Children Abuse.A large number of people attended the eventwith especially the youth coming in largenumbers.Different speakers filled the day’sprogramme. Leboeng Station CommanderCapt. Solomon Moholane warned thecommunity to refrain from abusing drugssuch as dagga and the alcohol called spion.He also warned those who are still producingspion illegally that they will face the law.Miss Teen Limpopo Rolemodels, MillicentMashele had a chance to speak to the youthand she warned them to be careful of doingnegative things. She told them that this mighthave an impact on their future.Domestic violence also came under thespotlight with the role substance abuse isplaying also being emphasised.Entertainment items gave the event a lessserious note as the crowd enjoyed dancing

Samancor ECM invests millions indevelopment of education infrastructure

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) isspending millions to help improve educa-tional facilities in the area. This was one of

the major projects for 2014.The investment in education infrastructure is central toSamancor Chrome’s principles and values to contribute to-wards sustainable community development. The projectsfocus on the upgrading and construction of basic schoolinfrastructure such as:1. Madibeng Primary School in Kutullo Village (TweefonteinMine Community) with additional classrooms/ 3 classroomsthat will be convertible into a hall, refurbishments and reno-vations;2. Mangabane Primary School at Mangabane Village(Doornbosch Mine Community) - Two Grade R Classroomsper school, 4 Classrooms, refurbishments and renovationsof classrooms;

3. Mogolo Primary School at Ga-Riba (DoornboschMine Community) - 8 Classrooms.4. Sehlaku Secondary School, Driekop Village(Doornbosch Mine Community) - School Hall, labo-ratory, Engineering workshop

5. Sekabate Primary School, Madiseng Village(Doornbosch Mine Community) -Admin Block,refurbishment of 2 Grade R Classrooms.Construction is progressing well and many ofthese buildings will be ready for use early in 2015.

In May ECM and Thorburn Security Solutions reached out toa group of children at the Dilokong Youth Development andEmpowerment Project.Donations consisting of food and blankets were delivered tothe 24 caretakers and the 115 children they look after.

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) hostedthe annual mines’ Eastern Limb HRD ForumCareer Expo.The event took place at Winterveld Club wheremines, related private enterprises andgovernment showcased a myriad of industryrelated futures to learners, with the emphasis onthe results they will need at the end of matric toqualify for training and bursary opportunities. Inthis regard the Mining Qualifications Authority’sstall proved to be very popular.Mr Emile Britz, General Manager of SamancorEastern Chrome Mines, welcomed guests at theevent and stressed the mining sector in thearea’s continued commitment to local skillsdevelopment and community upliftment.Speaking to guests on behalf of the MEC ofEducation in Limpopo, the Department’s Head ofCorporate Services, Ms Maylene Broderick, putthe emphasis on the need for educationaldevelopment in Sekhukhune District.ECM’s involvement in education in the area iswell-known. Some of the related projects for2014 included the renovation of desks, thecontruction of new classes, laboratories andschool assembly halls. Through this EMCenvisions a better future for the area.

Showcasing possible careersin the mining industry

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines celebrated ArbourWeek (beke ya go gaša mehlare) with the rest ofSouth Africa between 1 and 7 September 2014.The aim of Arbour week is to promote betterknowledge of trees and in particular indigenous trees.It stresses the necessity for everyone to plant treesand care for them. It highlights the vital role of treesin our lives and contributes to the achievement of agreen, dignified and healthy environment in all partsof South Africa.On 5 September 2014 ECM went back to rehabilitaedareas and planted 150 indigenous trees such as redwild berries, fever trees and camel thorn. These treeswere selectedbecause they areindigenous to thisarea, adapt quickly,uses less water andare quick growers.Eastern Chrome MineGeneral Manager, MrEmile Britz kick-started the plantingat Doornbosch OldOpencast.

Then they proceeded to Lannex Broken Hill. Both mine managers(Kobus Horn and Zenzile Moni) were present during the planting.ECM thanked all the Training Centre learners who alsoparticipated by digging holes and who will continue planting thetrees.

Rehabilitated areas get a boostSamancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM)participated in Mandela Day on 18 July2014 with a clean-up campaign on theSteelpoort/Polokwane road.They themed their day’s effort:“Our Place, Our Planet...OurResponsibility”.Volunteers made a commitment tocontinue taking responsibility for theenvironment and to continue workingwith Samancor in achieving a zero harmenvironment.

To the rescue with desk problemSamancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) has expanded itsmission in conjunction with communities to repair, rebuild andpaint school desks that were found to be in a state ofdisrepair. This time the focus fell on Mangabane PrimarySchool. As part of Samancor’s training and developmentstrategy, community members were employed on short termcontracts to attend the Generic Engineering skills programme.Once training had been completed the community learnerswere able to flaunt their newly acquired skills by designing thenew desk tops and securing them to the repainted deskframes.Samancor’s vision with this gesture is to touch the communityin a positive way, helping the schools and the communityenjoy a stronger connection. It makes the learners feel moreallied to their community and create a positive experience foreveryone.

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines was onceagain one of the big winners at the annualWildevy 4x4Day. The day aims to raise fundsfor charity and ECM annually hosts anobstacle point and prepares a potjie for thepotjiekos competition. This year their theme

was ‘Christmas in July’. The colourful decora-tions and original theme impressed visitors andjudges alike. The team’s hard work paid off asthey walked away with three prizes: Best Theme;Best Sponsored Obstacle Point and OverallWinner.

On Sunday 30 November the TubatseMasters played against Samancor EasternChrome Mine (ECM) in the semi-finals of theTubatse Chrome top 16 tournament.Tubatse Masters dominated the match in thefirst half and managed to score one goal byVelaphi Malaka. By half time the score wasstill 1-0.In the second half the Masters increasedtheir lead to 2-0 by the boot of VelaphiMalaka. ECM fought back and managed tolevel the score. They forced the game intoextra time. The game ended with a draw inextra time and it went to penalty shootout.ECM won the match 5-4 in the penaltyshootout.(Photographs & Information: JerialMovundlela).

Dolphin Ngele shines for Masters

During the Top 16 tournament that tookplace at Mangabane sports ground lastweekendTubatse Masters played againstRham United F.C. in a fight for the thirdposition.The Masters dominated the ball possessionin the first half and managed to score onegoal by Dolphin Ngele.The half time score was 1-1 in favour of theMasters. In the second half Rham managedto level the score but a few minutes laterDolphin Ngele put the Masters in the lead fora second time.Later in the second half Tomas Lubisi fromTubatse Masters scored from the reboundand sealed a victory for the Masters. Thefinal score was Tubatse Masters 3 andRham United 1.At the end of the day Tubatse Masterswalked away with R2000 for their thirdposition and Dolphin Ngele walked away withtwo awards. He was named the Player of theTournament and the Top Goal Scorer. Hescored 7 goals during the tournamnet. Playing for third placeOn 26 November Tubatse Chrome FC andGlencore’s Lion Ferrochrome FC played afriendly soccer game at Ga-Mapodiletownship.The two smelters revived theirneighbourhood entertaining soccer skills.Tubatse dominated play with Thato fromTubatse dismantling Glencore’s middlefielders. In the first half Tubatse netted threegoals by Seun Mathiba, Terence Makofaneand Mahlatse Mashegwane.The game went into half time with Tubatseleading 3-0.In the second half Glencore introduced somefresh legs making it difficult. On 27 November 2014, Tubatse Masters F.C. visited MarulengF.C. in Driekop to play a friendly soccer match.Tubatse Masters dominated the game in the first half and openedthe score with a goal by Mashudu Netshilidzi. In the second halfthe hosts dominated the ball possession and managed to scoretwo goals to lead 2-1. Just a few minutes before the final whistleDolphin Ngele scored the second goal for the Masters to makethe final score 2-2.(Information: Jerial Movundlela).

Thriller gamefor Masters

On Saturday 29 November the Tubatse Masters played against ateam from Riba Cross (Cell-C F.C) in the top 16 tournament arrangedby Tubatse Chrome. The match was played at Mangabane sportsgrounds. In the first half both teams showed their hunger for goalsand created scoring opportunities. Tubatse Masters scored withDolphin Ngele placing the ball in the net. Cell-C F.C. was not takingthis easily and replied with new energy. They managed to level thescore. Dolphin Ngele came through for his team with another goal tomake the half time score 2-1. In the second half Cell-C F.C. put theMasters’ defence under pressure and scored three goals to lead 4-2.But the Masters fought back and Dolphin Ngele scored his third goal.Masters continued putting on the pressure and substitute AndrewSkosana scored the fourth goalto level the score. After only afew minutes Andrew Skosanatook a long range shot outsidethe box and beat the Cell-Cgoalkeeper. Velaphi Malakaensured victory and a place inthe semi-finals for the Masterswhen he scored the sixth goalto make the final score 6-4 infavour of the Masters.(Photographs & Information:Jerial Movundlela).

On Monday 1 December Mototolo Platinum Mine raised awarenesson the HIV/Aids pandemic through a Fun Walk.Monday was World AIDS Day and it is the longest runninginternational health commemorative day. The objective of the day isto raise awareness of the global AIDS epidemic, to support themillions that are living with HIV/AIDS and to remember those whohave died. The day is also aimed at improving education about thedisease as well as to set aside and combat prejudices that come withthe disease - it is to fight against HIV/AIDS.“We walked because we know that one day AIDS will be a distantmemoray,” employees at the mine said.During the course of the day employees at the mine could also get toknow their HIV status, receive information about the disease andwhere needed seek counselling.(Photographs and information: Karabo Motene, Mototolo PlatinumMine).
