Points of Interest[1] Southern Approach /Giants GateThe approach leads to the main gate of the citadel, known as the Giants Gate. The gate consists of a single, massive block of stone, 10 meters wide and 5 metersthick. The gate is hollowed out of the center. The gatemay be sealed with a pair of massive wooden doors. This door has never been breached in the entire historyof Elkoi. Carved over the entrance is a large TruthRune and the phrase “Truth above all.”
[2] Elkoi’s OakThe city founder is said to have planted this tree uponthe citadel’s completion. Whether or not this is true, the massive black oak is incredibly ancient. It showsno sign of disease and all its limbs are healthy. Theacorns from this tree are collected by the pig tenders tofeed their stock. The peasants claim that pigs so fedare fatter and more fertile. There is somethingsupernatural about the tree.
[3] The Hero Shrine of ElkoiThis pyramidal structure is the chapel dedicated tothe city’s founder. It was created several hundred yearsafter the founder died of old age (Elkoi was one ofhistory’s few heroes who died in bed). Its interior is litby magical light, renewed in a ceremony each week bythe High Priest of the Yelmalio temple.
[4] Meeting HallUntil recently, this structure served as the local Lunartemple. It consists of a single large room with bencheslining the walls. There are several doors in it leading tobuildings next door. Lately, it has stood empty, orbeen used as a stable for horses.

[6] Pig TownThis section of Elkoi was razed during an invasion. The ruins are gone, but they have been replaced withthe earth and timber mounds that the pig tenders callhome. These traditional Balazaring dwellings areslowly being forced out as the larger, rectangular styledbuildings encroach.
[7] Pig GateThis is a narrow stairway carved into the stone of thecyclopean walls. It is normally used by the peasantpig tenders and thus is its name derived. The Pig Gatewill always have a Lunar guard at it, since the positionis considered too demeaning for the citadel warriors.
[8] The North or Red Moon GateThis gate is of recent construction (or excavation, as thecase may be). It leads to the Lunar Pavilion andeventually to Elkoi-outside-the-walls. There are alwaystwo Lunar guards here. This gate can be sealed with apair of heavy wooden doors at each end.
[9] Seven Mothers Priestesses HomeBoth of the women mentioned in the Persons ofProminence section as being holy people of the Lunarreligion will dwell here. The building is ornate on theinside and out, constructed and decorated in a stylemore appropriate to the cities in the empire.
[10] Lunar Pavilion & Seven Mothers TempleA ramp and stair leads down from the north gate tothis symbol of Lunar occupancy. Surrounded by apaved plaza, the pristine whiteness of the temple’smarble columns and pediment stands in mute contrastto the dark and heavy walls of the hostage citadel. The stones for the temple were cut deep in the empireand shipped over the years to this lonely outpost, tobe put in place by several generations of importedcraftsmen. The project is in its final stages now. Theinterior of the shrine consists of seven chapels, eachdevoted to one of the subcults. The largest cubicle isreserved for the Red Goddess herself. Each chapelcontains a small, stone statue of the deity hallowedtherein. The temple is removed from the outside worldby a wooden stockade, erected as a temporaryprotection about 50 years past. It is slowly beingreplaced by the sturdier mortared stone wall thatsurrounds part of the Lunar garrison.
[11] Lunar GarrisonThis fortress-outside-a-fortress is home toapproximately 200 Lunar troops. This normally meansthat at any given time, there are 150 to 170 able-bodiedsoldiers available. The four smaller buildings alongthe north wall are the garrison bunkhouses. The restare stationed at other points throughout the city, including the Kings Inn. The larger, single building is
the camp mess hall and the offices/living quarters forthe garrison commander, Euryptus the Bold. Thegarrison is surrounded by a combination of stone andwooden walls. The fortress has two watch towers anda well.
[12] Elkoi-Outside-The-WallsThere isn’t enough room in the citadel proper to housethe ever expanding population. Abandoning theprotection offered by the ponderous walls, manycitizens have chosen to build their homes outside. Thesettlement consists of many of the pig tenders’ earthenhogans, along with more recent buildings of Lunardesign. Included in this collection are the shop/homesof several craftsmen, a brewery, a granary, and anotherinn known as the White Eubuck.
[13] The Trader’s WarehouseThis compound is owned, operated and occupied byCyriel Endelkar, Etyries initiate and canny merchant. He has a virtual monopoly on trade in the town andtakes a little out of the till of every shop inside andoutside the citadel. His shop is well-stocked andlavishly furnished. The building itself is four storiestall and sturdily constructed.
[14] The Court of BattlesThis is one of the several courts that form theceremonial approach to the palace and the throne roomof the king.
[18] The Palace of ElkoiThe structure housing the number is the megaron orthrone room complex. It is one of the consistent designfeatures of each of the three citadels. The roomcontaining the four pillars is the throne room/audiencehall. The rest of the palace rooms are overdone withlavish furnishings. Most of the decorating wassupervised by Queen Jocestis and her oldest sonSylveius. Each of the members of the royal family hasa private room that reflects his or her jaded tastes.Numerous murals of the Red Emperor or the RedGoddess, plus a shocking one of the Crimosn Bat, arepainted on the walls.
[20] Temple of Yelmalio at ElkoiThis area includes a court, a rude beehive shapeddomed temple (no gold encased ceiling here), a pair ofside chapels to Balazar and Foundchild the Hunter, and living quarters for the High Priest, TaklongWoodheart.

Points and Places[1] The PensThis derisive term is given to the area outside thecyclopean walls of the citadel. The king banishedthe pig tenders and their stock to this place. Theencampment is surrounded by a high woodenpalisade. It is not designed to be defendable. Theround dwellings are constructed of earth packedaround a wooden framework. The squarebuildings are constructed of unmortered stone. Along ramp leads up to the citadel proper.
[2] The Outer CourtThe buildings here are recent. Several craftsmenhave regular shops here, including a butcher, alamp maker and most recently a brewmaster. Atthe north end of an upwards-sloping court is thefamous Griffin Gates of Trilus.
[2A] The Griffin GateOver the door is a massive triangular lintel with apair of regal griffins carved in bas-relief upon it.They stare outwards, guardians of the city, orwould stare had some thief or vandal in Trilus’past refrained from stealing the golden heads fromthe carvings. The gate may be sealed by a pair ofmassive wooden valves.
[3] The Hero Shrine of TrilusThis rude structure is almost no more than a pileof rocks with a hollow inside and is the shrinededicated to the hero founder of the city. As thepatron of the city, the Triloi believe he protectsthem from harm and makes their pigs fat. Insidethe shrine is a carving showing a griffin and belowit pictographs tell of a journey to the north andfinding a single mountain. Legend whispers thatan aged Trilus died upon that mountain, and thathe is not buried here. The priests claim otherwise.
[4] The Hall of the Master HunterThis is the permanent residence of the FoundchildRune Master who has won the annual election. Itis always ready for him if he desires to dwell there. Many Master Hunters do not care for the confinesof the citadel and prefer to live in the wilds. Whenofficial functions call them to the fortress, it is herethat they stay. The compound consists of a walledenclosure with a wooden gate, a pen for themaster’s dogs, and a small dwelling, rustic but

comfortably equipped. There is a well with cleanand cool water in the enclosure and the smallbuilding has two floors and a cellar. The buildingwill comfortably (by nomad Balazaring standards)sleep the master’s entire retinue. Cult gatheringsrequiring the attendance of more than one or twopeople are not held here, but usually take place ina nearby nomad camp.
[5] The Red Bear LodgeA freshly painted sign of a large scarlet bearrampart, swings in the breeze outside this inn, oneof two in the citadel. The Red Bear is run by RhegusWhitehair, a Lunar citizen and an initiate of theEtyries subcult of cult of the Seven Mothers.Rhegus has a surprising shock of bright wiry hairthat sticks out from his head, despite obviousefforts to oil it down. His mouth always smiles, but his eyes never do.
His inn is patronized mainly by travellingLunar citizens, soldiers and the overflow from theStuck Pig (the only other inn at Trilus). Most of thelocals believe the rumor that he has dealings withdemons. The inn itself is cleaner and better stockedthan its competition, but this is due mainly to lackof customers. There is an ample supply of LunarGin, though it is seldom ordered.
The local favorite drink is called the Knockout. It is made from chewed beetles spat into whateverfruit juice is available, and aged a solid week.
The inn has a commons room on the mainfloor with sleeping quarters upstairs and a smallcellar for food and drink. There will always be atleast two guards at the storehouse.
[6] Stuck Pig Lodging House & TavernThis is one of the two such places in Trilus. It is runby Djimm Mith, the son of the Issaries merchantsJoh Mith and Zix Porub. He is a hollow cheekedyoung man with a friendly but distant smile. Healways carries a towel over one arm or shoulder.Djimm uses the large building and the severalsmaller ones around it. The large building has twofloors and a cellar.
Lunar Gin is available, but has not been whollyembraced by the local drinking tastes. The housespecial is Seven-hour wine, a special potent drinkmade from three types of local berries accordingto formula known only to Joh and Djimm Mith.Djimm recently imported a brewmaster fromEsrolia to supplement his supply of beer, usinglocal wild grain. The main floor of the large building
is the tavern and common room for meals andoccasional entertainment. The upper floor issleeping chambers.
[7] Lightbringers HallThis is the semi-permanent home of almost all themembers of the Lightbringer cults operating inthe area. Here you will find the healer, Dushi Sone, and the mysterious scholar, Bluebird.
[8] Yalaring’s StablesThis is where the king of Trilus keeps his ridingand war mounts. There will usually be riding andcavalry horses in here at any given time. There isalways a patrol of citadel warriors standing watch.
[9] Warriors PlazaSo named because it is adjacent to the barracks ofthe citadel warriors. This is a combination outdooraudience hall and sport arena for combat (bothmock and otherwise). This is also the place thatthe priests and King Yalaring adjudge the MasterHunter after the yearly hunt.
[10] The Storehouses of TrilusThis tall lookout tower contains the royal storerooms. The store rooms of this complex containthe treasures of the kingdom, including many furs, tusks, horns, some gold and sliver, and possiblysome gems and jewelry. At least one contingentof citadel warriors is always on guard here.
[12] The Palace of TrilusThe structure housing the number is the megaronor throne room complex. It is one of the consistentdesigns of Balazaring architecture. The room withthe four pillars is the throne room proper.Theroom with the open roof is the throne room wheresit Yalaring and his Vania to lord over their people.
[13] The North TowerThis fortification is self sufficient. It may be sealedoff from the rest of the palace. It contains sufficientfood to feed a score of men for a month. Theformer king of Trilus tried to hold up in here, butwas surprised when Yalaring Monsterslayer andhis wife silently scaled the wall one stormy night.
