These measurements are straight forward, Height, Weight

and 40 time, these skill sets cant not be taught. Some

might feel that these are the most important becausecoaching can not impact these. Although this is true it can

trap you in to picking or placing the wrong player into the

    wrong position.

The drill is designed to teach tackling

    techniques and run techniques.

    Coach B should

    evaluate and correct

    the defensive player

    Coach A should

    evaluate and correct

    the offensive player

B.C. should make sure they are carrying the ball in

the correct hand and run with their head up. They

should not try to juke too much. Remind them that

there is no dancing in football. They should, when it

applies, keep their legs pumping after contact is

    made by the L.B.

    B.C.

    L.B.

L.B. wants to practice proper tackling

techniques of HIT, WRAP, and DRIVE.

Always stress the importance of the

placement of the head in relationship of

the direction of the B.C. The head must

be across the body of the B.C. in such a

way that the B.C. would have to run thru

their head, shoulder, and arm in order to

    break the tackle

This coach will give the hand off by

Correct hand off is with the

players near arm is parallel to

the ground and at his chest,

his far arm is parallel to the

ground and at his waist. The

    player should not reach for

the ball he should allow the

coach/QB to place it into his

    stomach at which time he

will clamp down with both his

    arms

This coach will evaluate the players

ability to carry the ball in the proper arm.

He should also stress good technique ofthe three points of pressure. 1) the

outside hand over the tip of the ball. 2)

the outside forearm/elbow should act as

a clamp over the middle of the ball. 3)

the other tip of the ball should be tightly

    Evaluation Sheet

These measurements are the most subjective, however

can be the key to your season win or lose. There is no

drill judge these on, you will need to evaluate the ratingfrom talking to the player as well as the parents. For the

most part a player will imitate their parents. If the parents

are self-focused, the player be the same.

Linemen, dont need to be your biggest players

on the team, yet size will give them a slight

advantage. They do need to be the more

disciplined. It is very hard to remember thecount and your assignment when Linebackers

are jumping up to blitz and then jumping back.

Speed here is also not key. Due to the confined

space they just need to get off the ball when the

    play starts

Key linemen are going to be the center and thetight end. The center is the most important

because he hikes the ball and then complete his

assignment. It helps for him to have long legs

and quick. The tight end will be on the play-side

of the line to add a blocker at the point of attack

and will be the only linemen that can catch the

ball. Because of that he need to be of ball

    carrying weight.

The running backs will be responsible for the

majority of the offensive load. These will be

the fastest players at ball carrying weight. If

you have 2 fairly equal speed RBs then

work out of the Pro (shown) formation, if

you have a power runner and a speed

runner then work out of the I formation.

The quarter back does not need to be fast nor

throw the ball perfectly, yet he should be an

athlete. 90% of the time he will be giving it to a

running back. He might only throw the ball 5% and

run it himself the other 5%. He just needs to be

smart most of all. Dont waste speed or strength

by putting your star at QB.

Receivers are usually small, yet they hold a key position. Remember that they

are used as primarily as a blocker out wide. With the mass majority of running

plays going to the outside, his block is a key block. He also effects the

formation. If they guard him at all he stretches the defense. If they dont guard

him . . Throw him the ball. This is the position which carries the plays in on

offense. He needs to know the lingo!

    Offense

  • 7/28/2019 Player Placement Youth

    18/20

The DL does not need to be

    your most athletic players.

    Because of confined space

speed is not an issue. Yet it can

pay big dividends if you place a

    smaller yet quicker player at

nose. He can interrupt thecenters assignment or even

    disturb the snap!

The linebackers will need tobe your second best set of

    players on defense. They will

    be calling the plays and

    handling 90% of the blitzing

    (you will blitz a lot!)

    Safeties need either to be

    speedy or disciplined. If

coached right, you can make a

    lesser player a solid safety.

    Sometimes you may go with

just one safety and bring theother up to play LB if he shows

    some aggression.

At higher levels of play teams

    place their best players at

linebacker but I see this as a

waste with the high % of plays

    which run to the outside.Your

    bestplayers must be at end

    and corner. Congestion will

stop the plays in the middle. If

you control the outside you will

    win the game.

Try to have players only go one way. This helps get everyone in

their minimum plays and it will make practice more efficient when

1stteam O can play against 1stteam D. Also by doing this you

given more a sense of pride by a player being able to say I am

    the starting ______!

    Special Teams

    (kick receive)

Pocket players, These are the players which are on the second

layer on the formation, These guys need to be sure handed and havethe ability to take a hit. The kick off team will most likely try to dump

the ball into the pocket with a head hunter streaking down on the

ball. The plan will be not to have a return, but to secure the ball.

Deep men, a solid strategy is to have one stud and one lesser athlete,

this way you are able to place the lesser athlete in the game and give

him a high profile position yet keep him from any damage to him self

or the team. (he must understand that he is a deep blocker and not areturn man)

Middle men, These guys need to be decent athletes for the fact

that many times the ball is kicked towards them by accident when a

team is trying to kick into the pocket or kick it deep. Either way

they will find the ball in their hands occasionally.

Front line, This is usually made up of the offensive line, however it

is a good spot to have lesser athletic players get their plays in and

be apart of the action!! They do not need to be physical due to their

blocks being more like a basketball pick than a bone crushing

    pancake block.

Contain, Many times these positions are f illed by the defensive end

or corners, because of they will already have the understanding ofnothing is allowed outside even if it means some one else gets the

    tackle.

Head hunters, Your best tackler and your most determined. He will

need to fight thru many blocks and will have to run thru traffic to get to

his target. Many times these will be your inside linebackers because

of their familiarity with working in congestion.

Line Fillers, These positions are a good spot for your less athletic

players. Their job is to run straight down the f ield until they are

almost as deep as the ball and at that point they will converge on

the ball carrier. Due to squib kicking the ball the ball carrier is often

too focused on ball handling than running another player over.

KickerThis is also a good position to place a less athletic player. By

utilizing the squib kick he will not need to launch it out of the stadium.

Most younger players can be taught to kick a wobbly 25 yards (with

the roll) kick which does not get off the ground more than 10 feet
