In this edition, we’ve got lots of handy hints for you to make a positive impact on the environment. On pages 10 – 11, we’ve listed great ideas to upcycle your unwanted goods and on pages 14 – 15 we’ve listed environmentally friendly habits to adopt at home.

Did you know that students living at UTS Housing have access to some of the most sustainable food in Sydney? That’s right - they have access to free vegies, grown on their own roof! Our guest writer, Seb Crawford, UTS Sustainability Coordinator has contributed a great article on the vegie gardens, so head over the pages 16 – 17 to find out more.

On pages 18 – 19, we’ve got some easy do it yourself gift ideas. Love a good read? On pages 21 – 22, we’ve listed our top picks for green superheroes and villians. If you hate throwing out your old clothes, on pages 24 – 25 we’ve listed cool recycled fashion ideas - great reading if you want to reduce waste and stretch your clothing budget!

Bored and want to try an activity that doesn’t require pens, paper, a smart pad or phone? Our puzzled page includes fun shadow puppets, so have a go and see if you can come up with some of your own.

We’ve also got our usual articles including Vox Pops, Arnie’s World, Club of the Month, Snap Happy, previews and a recipe!

We hope you enjoy special digital copy of Playground and remember, we can all make a difference to help save the environment.

Cool ways toupcycleunwanted goodsyour

Aside from throwing your old things away, have you ever wondered what to do with your unwanted goods?

Upcycling is a cool, fun and environmentally friendly way to take your unwanted possessions and turn them into something new. Take a look at our upcycling suggestions and see if you also came up with interesting ways to reuse your old junk.

Everyone hates house cleaning, but we can

always make it cheap and environmentally

friendly. Try using old t-shirts as rags - they’re great for dusting, are soft, don’t scratch surfaces and are an environmentally alternative to paper towels. Need to clean a hard to reach surface? Your old toothbrush is ideal for cleaning dust ridden, grotty corners of your bathroom, kitchen or floor.

Got left over calendars? Before throwing them out, find some cool images, place them in frames and add them to your wall. There are endless possibilities for your gallery wall layout and it’s a simple, cheap and effective way to decorate your home.

We’ve all come across

discarded milk crates and there are a tonne of ideas to turn them into useful and practical household items. Turn them upside down, tie on a comfy cushion and you have yourself a chair. For a cool visual affect, paint and stack them in fun patterns to create an interesting focal point in the room.

Ever woken up with an orange, roadside

traffic cone in your living room? With a little bit on ingenuity, you can turn an ugly traffic cone into a handy lampshade. Drill holes throughout the cone, place a torch or light on the floor and the cone on top. Traffic cones come in different shapes and sizes and you can always use interesting drill patterns to create the right mood.

Fresh flowers are a beautiful way to show someone you care or brighten up a room, but their days are numbered and they’re expensive! If you have left over paper, give flower making a go. Paper flowers can be just as pretty, last longer and you can add your own touch by including petals with drawings, children’s paintings, poems or song lyrics.

Bookends are a great way to keep your text books neat and tidy and your room organised. A quick and easy way to make bookends is to take two empty glass jars and fill them with small rocks, or coloured marbles. Another clever idea is to take two bricks and cover them with colourful fabric, or find a couple of large stones and give them a quick paint.

Tea cup planters are a great idea for those with limited space and a green thumb. Small plants like herbs or cacti work best and look amazing sitting on your window sill. To add some extra flair, use different sized cups with lots of colour and patterns and don’t be afraid to use cups that are chipped!

We all know

plastic bags are bad for the environment, but many of us continue to use them. To reduce the number of plastic bags you throw away, try weaving strips of bags into a skipping rope, or for those with a creative flair, plastic bags can be made into bags, coasters, beads and wall hangings. Just head online to research the endless environmental friendly options.

Ever wondered what to do with an old ugly

wooden pallet? There’s lots of cool things to make if you just use a little imagination! Bookshelves, garden seats, herb planters and tables are just some ideas. For the very talented, there may even be the potential to start a new business empire! Why not grab some tools, sand paper and paint and start creating!

The lucky students at UTS Housing have access to some of the most sustainable food in Sydney - vegies grown right on their own roof!

Tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, eggplant, cauliflower, zucchini, chillies, shallots, onions, strawberries, herbs and more. All grown in the UTS roof top gardens.

The Gumal and Yura student residence buildings have roof top vegie gardens and the smaller Geegal building has fruit trees in the court yard. They were built by facilities staff from UTS Housing and are maintained by staff and students. Residents in each building are welcome to help themselves, picking vegies and herbs when needed.

“I love the way we have vegies growing on the roof, and it’s really convenient to pick lettuce or herbs and stuff whenever you need them, said student gardener Rashi Khindri. “I”ve been involved for almost 6 months now, and it gives me immense pride when people approach me and tell me how easy their lives have become because of the everyday convenience of having veggies so close. And also they’re free!”

Urban food gardening has gained in popularity recently as people become aware of the benefits. Locally grown food has less ‘food miles’ with all the associated environmental impacts of food grown long distances from where it’s eaten.

Picking produce fresh when you need it is the ultimate in convenience and low food miles. Home grown also means no chemicals. But best of all, it’s fun and rewarding. Even a pot of herbs on the balcony can provide joy and satisfaction.

Student gardener, Navya Naramsetty says, “I didn’t know much about gardening when I started, but working on the Gumal garden has been fun and I’ve learned quite a bit. It makes me feel great and I have become more health conscious due to the organic veggies that we grow.”

New compact plant varieties means it’s easier than ever to grow things in confined spaces, even if it’s only to supplement purchased vegies. Items like salad greens, herbs, chillies and even cherry tomatoes are easy to grow in pots. With a bit more space eggplants, snow peas, beans and blueberries are also suitable for pots.

For those with no outdoor space, (or passion that out-grows the balcony), there are also free community gardens around the city. These offer free opportunities for planting, ways to develop your knowledge and skills, or just meet like-minded people. So with all these options, join the urban food gardening revolution today!

How to do it: 1. Place map on a cutting mat, printed side down, then place cork coaster on top.2. Cut out circles from map by tracing coaster with craft knife.3. Use brush to apply glue sealant to one side of coaster, covering completely. 4. Adhere back of map circle to coaster, smoothing to remove bubbles.5. Brush top and sides of coaster with a thin layer of glue sealant, and let dry. Repeat to make a set.http://www.marthastewart.com/909936/map-coasters

How to do it: 1. To get started on your DIY cement planters, you’ll need some cement mix. 2. Depending on how smooth or textured you want your end result to look you can add Peat Moss and/or Perlite to your mixture but those things are totally optional. 3. What I figured out is the more water you use the thinner and more runny the consistency (duh). The result of a runnier mixture is that you have less air bubbles which makes for a smoother finish but it takes a LONG TIME to cure and harden. 4. I mixed everything in a big bucket and added water a little at a time until the mixture seemed right. I ended up just sticking my hand in (make sure you wear a rubber glove).

Whether it’s a birthday or an anniversary, there always seems to be a gift-giving occasion around the corner. This time around, don’t settle for store-bought gifts when you can give your loved ones these easy one-of-a-kind DIY presents. Making your presents yourself really reflects how special the receiver is to you because of the time, effort, and love spent on these gifts. These type of gifts can last a life time!

3What you need: Leather Album Posts (mine were 20mm…) Hole Punch/Leather Punch /Hollow Punch

(something to put a hole through leather!) Sketch Paper (I took pages out of a pad) Paper Cutter

How to do it: 1. If needed, cut your leather to size. Fold leather in half and mark where you want your holes to be. 2. Punch holes in leather. 3. Cut paper to size to fit inside leather and punch holes in paper, making sure the holes line up with the holes in the leather. 4. Put the paper inside the folded leather and screw in the album posts. EASY!!

GREEN FOODS 2) WATERCRESS

The slightly peppery, sour tasting watercress is handy because it can be added raw to salads or sandwiches without a minute of preparation time. To get the best benefits from this vegetable, like the other veggies on this list, one cup of the stuff has more than your daily value of vitamin K, and is also linked to cancer prevention.

1) KALEKale has made it to the top of the list. Kale, very similar to Collard Greens, is packed with nutrients. To get the most nutritional benefit of these similar vegetables, steaming is recommended. Not only are the vitamin K, A and C levels off the charts, but Kale and Collard Greens are a good source of minerals. There are also many complex flavonoids in both vegetables that are linked to cancer prevention and detoxification. Both vegetables are a prominent part of US Southern cuisine, and can often be found in soups and salads.

You can also add it as an ingredient to pasta or lasagna.

4) SPINACHSpinach is cheap and versatile. It goes well with almost everything and can be used to add flavor to many dishes. Go one step further and you can put this spinach garlic mix on top of pasta with feta cheese, or even make a spinach enchilada with Verde sauce and Monterrey Jack cheese on top.

3) BOK CHOYBok Choy, or Chinese cabbage, like Rapini and Spinach is packed with both vitamin A and C. It can be wonderful and easy addition to any Chinese stir fry dish. As children we were used to associating green, leafy vegetables to horrible looking, tasteless foods, often forced upon us by our parents. Their nutritional properties only becomes apparent when reaching adulthood. Why such a dislike for what ultimately helps us sustain healthy leaving? Is it the colour, shape, taste or cooking methods? Which is the healthiest green vegetable or drink?

Leafy vegetables are ideal for weight management as they are typically low in calories. They are useful in reducing the risk of cancer and heart disease since they are low in fat, high in dietary fiber, rich in folic acid, vitamin C, potassium and magnesium. Having a daily serving of green leafy vegetables, helps lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Green, leafy vegetables come in a variety of colours from the bluish-green of kale to the bright kelly green of spinach. Their flavours can range from sweet to bitter, from peppery to earthy. You should always choose crisp leaves with a fresh vibrant green colour. Yellowing is a sign of age and indicates that the greens may have an off flavour.
