Guten Tag!Winter is well on its way as we deck out in our winter warmers and prepare for the un-festive season of cold weather, exams and plenty of comfort food! Rather than putting on our regular winter coat of a few additional kilos and a moon tan to match, this month we are getting ‘winter-ready’ by dressing our best and hitting the UTS Fitness Centre to stay in shape over the cooler months.

We have some great deals and promotions from our sponsors to keep you dressed, fed and ready to party not to mention some a-MAZE-ing events coming up in May! So ditch your DVDs and come and have some real fun on campus this winter.

You know you love us,

XOXO

ed.says!

Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, its bobsled time! Cool runnings! ~ Cool Runnings {1993}Based on the true story of the first Jamacian bobsled team trying to make it to the Winter Olympics.

HI AGAIN,

If you’re like me, over the past week you have dug your coat out of the back of the closet, found the warm winter blankets, and tested out the heater - If you’re like me you’re getting Winter Ready! And so is UTS!

Over the next month we will have the famous UTS Amazing Race, where design students will be pitted against engineers, accountants against chemists, in a battle of wits, skill, cunning and athletics to determine who will be crowned the 2012 Champion!

Speaking of Champions, lookout for our State of Origin events get behind the mighty Blues as we take on those XXXX drinking northerners!

We will also be having the UTS DJ comp; the Red Cross blood donation van will be stopping by, and the Oaktree foundation will be challenging UTS students to try to live for a week on $2 a day to raise awareness about poverty - should be easy for anyone who has had to live on youth allowance - right?

Looking forward to seeing you all at these events and many more!

THE EXTREME POVERTY LINE IS LIVING ON LESS THAN $2 A DAY. TODAY THERE ARE 1.4 BILLION PEOPLE LIVING IN EXTREME CONDITIONS BELOW THE POVERTY LINE. THAT’S 60 TIMES AUSTRALIA’S POPULATION.

THE CAUSEIn a day, this $2 is expected to cover all living

expenses including housing, education, health,

transport and food. Most people will survive on

only two or less basic meals a day, with no money

left over for other life necessities. There are

no backup funds, safety nets and no access to

education, services and job opportunities needed

to break the cycle of poverty.

Since 1985 however, a combined global effort

has seen the population living below the poverty

line drop from 52% to 25%. Live below the Line

aims to combat extreme poverty in two diverse

ways; creating widespread awareness of this

extreme issue and raising much needed funds

for education in the developing countries where

poverty is extensive. Conversations are the

simple key to this!

YOU’RE INVITED

campaign

Come peek inside the campaign. There’ll be live entertainment, guest speakers and $2 nibbles.

THE CHALLENGELive below the Line is a simple way to make a

large impact. It is difficult for Aussies to attach

themselves to an issue like this because we live in

a privileged country with endless opportunities. We

are lucky enough to be worlds away from having a

life like a third world country.

Live below the line is encouraging Aussies to

attempt to re-create the experiences of those

living in extreme poverty (albeit to a much smaller

degree). The Oaktree Foundation aims to give

insight and perspective on this serious issue, and

to help fellow Aussies make a significant difference.

HOW TO HELPThe Oaktree Foundation invites people from

all diverse backgrounds to participate in this

challenge. From 7-11 May we are encouraged to live

on just $2 a day for all living expenses like housing,

travel, food, health and education. Understanding

how people cope in these circumstances will raise

awareness of this issue and get the conversations

flowing around the dinner table, at uni or on the

train home, about how we can be of further help to

those living in extreme poverty.

The Runway club is a newly introduced club to

the UTS social scene launching at the 2012 O-Day.

Currently standing at 62 members the club is

free for anyone to join you just need to share

your love and passion for fashion and like the

page on facebook [http://www.facebook.com/

pages/Runway-UTS/193676834063973] to become

a member! Members have access to a range of

exciting events including; high fashion shoots,

runway shows and industry experience talks with

successful designers, agencies and organizers

just to name a few!

What’s your best tip for looking hot while

staying warm this winter?

E: Human nature tells us that a healthy person is

one that generally a happy individual, so wear

what you feel comfortable in, fashion is not right

or wrong, the key is to be confident!

What do you consider to be fashionable

winter wear?

E: Winter wear should consist of utilitarian

necessities; they should be wind proof, water proof,

Sydney weather proof essentially! Practicality plays

a big part in fashion ‘sense’ because fashion is

generally common, but it doesn’t mean everyone

has it. Remember to be safe too, don’t wear

anything that is going to put your life at risk

when walking to the train late at night!

How can we dress up an outfit we already own

if we don’t have extra cash for funky accessories?

E: For girls a simple ribbon in your hair can look

great! If you have blue eyes add some green or

blue to a necklace or earrings to bring out your

natural features. For Guys keep it simple, if it’s

clean its good enough.

What do you see as being the future

fashion trends this winter?

E: As a fashion photographer I believe that the

European style trench coats, French and Italian

style shoes and hand bags will never go out

of fashion. However I would love to see more

Australian designers and perhaps even a UTS

student lead the fashion industry one day with

classy designer fashion wear at affordable

prices, and importantly, made in Australia!

Runway UTS is about encouraging students to

be what they intend to be and to fight tall poppy

syndrome in society and back the ideas of the

future! If this sounds like you then make sure

you check out the Runway UTS page!

SO RUG UP THIS WINTER, LOOK

CONFIDENT (AND CLEAN) AND

STAY STYLISH!

Special thanks to photographer Elie Nakel and model Shelby Gemmola.

UTS Thai SocietyWHAT OUR CLUB IS ABOUT: We promote Thai culture

and tradition at UTS with a focus on supporting

Thai international students. We also aim to provide

networking opportunities for all students along with

support regarding education and welfare. It is also

a social platform where students get to relax and

enjoy their uni experience.

WHEN WE MEET: Every week at the Multi-purpose

sports Hall to play sports with other Thai students

from numerous other universities. We also have

events on every month.

WHY PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO JOIN: If you love

Thailand, its culture, the people, the language or

the food, then this club is for you! We have so

many activities throughout the semester and if you

eat Thai food regularly, you will save heaps with

our great restaurant discounts around the city!

QUIRKY FACT: Our President Angelica, is a

flamenco dancer!

WHAT OUR CLUB IS ABOUT: Our club has represented

UTS at university games and inter varsity

competitions since the late 1990’s! We participate in

three social competitions across Sydney – mainly

mixed sides across beginner, intermediate, high

divisions and a men’s team in a high division.

We’ve had some great successes lately – picking

up gold, silver, and bronze at Uni Games, finishing

first, second, and third in the North’s Mixed Comp,

and winning the Inter varsity Cup (both Men’s and

Women’s teams!).

If you’re in need of some great stories to tell your

friends, just join us at uni games – possibly the

best couple of weeks of your uni life!

WHY PEOPLE SHOULD JOIN: Touch is a great sport

to build up fitness without the risk of injury that

comes with full contact sport. Our large member

base means you’ll meet a lot of new people – you’ll

always run into someone you know around uni!

While the club prides itself on its competition

successes, it also caters for those who are looking

for something social. For instance, on Monday

nights after the North’s Mixed Comp, the three

mixed teams all go out for Thai food together.

There are also pre-uni games activities with your

team and with the whole UTS squad, and of course

we love a good party – hosting regular events

such as Commencment and Origin Party.

VAN

This month the Red Cross Blood Donation van will

be coming to Ultimo to collect blood donations

from UTS and Ultimo TAFE students. Red Cross is

a charity organisation that runs various programs

to help the needy and less fortunate. The blood

donation service is possibly their best known

community activity with 1 in 30 Australians

donating blood each year.

In 2002 the UTS Red Cross Society was formed

and is still going strong under the leadership of

Wilson Gomez with 65 current members and plenty

of activities throughout the year to raise funds for

Red Cross.

“We have done a lot of fundraisers such as bake

sales, BBQ’s, movie nights, trivia nights and one big

joint event with other clubs for the Japan tsunami

in 2011” said Wilson.

“This year we are trying to do more social events not

just fundraising, we are also going to get speakers

from the Red Cross to give presentations at UTS so

that people will know more about the organisation.”

World Red Cross Day falls in May and the UTS Red

Cross Society will be hosting a guest speaker to

come and talk about the Red Cross organisation

and provide information to students. If you would

like more information about this event contact the

club directly: [email protected]

If you’ve heard of the Red Cross and are interested

in giving blood this May then make sure you check

out the donation truck. Donating is a rewarding

experience for both yourself and the community.

The UTS Red Cross Society is always looking for new

members and it’s a great charity to be involved with,

particularly when you have a tight budget!

WINTER IN AUSTRALIA MEANS DRINKING HOT CHOCOLATES, RUGGING UP BY THE HEATER AND

STAYING IN TO ENJOY SOME WARM WINTER MEALS. FOOD GETS HEARTIER AND JEANS GETS

TIGHTER AS WE STAY IN, EAT MORE AND STRUGGLE TO GET OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING.

BY SPRING, WE’VE COME TO REGRET THE DECISION OF ALL THOSE PASTA MEALS AND MISSED

GYM SESSIONS AND IT’S A LONG ROAD BACK TO THE ‘ULTIMATE SUMMER BODY’ WE ACHIEVED

EVER SO BRIEFLY LAST YEAR!

This year the UTS Fitness Centre introduced ‘Suspension’ classes to their group exercise timetable. The class

involves a range of exercises focusing on different muscle groups to increase strength, balance and flexibility.

Exercising to the tune of the latest top 40 hits, the exercises are completed in short sets with short rest breaks

in between. Lasting approximately 45 minutes the class works to increase participant’s metabolism and heart

rate, thus burning fat and toning the body at the same time. The class is great for relieving stress and anxiety,

particularly around the exam and assignment periods!

Throughout the cooler months the thought of shedding your winter-wear is almost as appealing as going for an

ocean swim without a wetsuit. The best ways to motivate yourself to ditch your lasagna lunch box and head to

the gym is by recruiting a friend to join your crusade to stay fit through winter.

Exercising with a friend or within a group significantly increases your changes of continuing your exercise

regime and achieving your hot ‘winter’ body. Suspension gives you an overall body workout in just 45 minutes,

leaving plenty of time to polish off your lunch box lasagna when you finish!

So what are you waiting for? Bring a friend and join in the Suspension frenzy that is happening in the

UTS Fitness centre! Make sure you arrive early as places are limited!
