Playing with your Hands

Slides prepared for:University of the Philippines Machine Design Summit

January 23, 2016

Hey! I’m Mithi!- UPD BS ECE graduate - I write about some robotics stuff at mithi.xyz - I facilitate robotics workshops sometimes at

Nanica.io

Do you play with your hands?

Three simple reasons you might want to start playing with your hands.. (among many)

What is play?

Stuart BrownPsychiatrist, Pioneer researcher on play in “National Institute of Play”

“Play is just doing it for its own sake. It doesn't have a particular purpose, and that's what's great about play. If its purpose is more important than the act of doing it, it's probably not play.”

Reason 1: It’s fun, maybe?

Why did Stuart Brown start to research on play?

Reason 2: So we don’t become murderers

Short Video - 2 (1 minute and 47 seconds)

“NASA and Boeing, before they will hire a research and development problem solver -- even if they're summa cum laude from Harvard or Cal Tech -- if they haven't fixed cars, haven't done stuff with their hands early in life, played with their hands, they can't problem-solve as well.”

Reason 3: It makes us a little bit smarter, we might get hired by NASA!

Two ways (suggestions?) you can play with your hands..

Suggestion 1: The easier but slightly more expensive way.

Suggestion 2: The slightly more tedious ‘from scratch’ way.

Three of my favorite beginner projects!

Project 1: The Trinket Rover!

Project 2: Bob the Biped!

Project 2: Kame the Quadruped!
