Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme This scheme gives you a second chance to go back to full time education and training. All applicants must be 21 years or over to qualify. Who qualifies for VTOS? Adults 21 years and over and on unemployment assistance or unemployment benefit or signing for credits for at least 6 months. Widows and widowers. Lone parents. Deserted and separated spouses. Those in receipt of Disability Allowance. What allowances are payable? Participants allowances are equal to social welfare payments including secondary benefits. Meal allowance. Travel allowances if one is 3 miles or more from the college. Courses will be provided free of charge. All costs relating to courses will be paid for by VTOS. Bonus payment to certain categories of long term unemployed. Where can I apply for a college place? Seventeen higher education institutions are partners in the scheme. Discussions are ongoing with the universities with a view to extending the scheme. Links have already been established with University College Cork. How do I apply through the scheme? Applications for a higher education place through the scheme are made using the standard CAO form. Instructions are provided in the current CAO Handbook. Use this guide to find out: (i) the FETAC certificates that are linked to higher education courses (Part 1) (ii) the higher education courses that are available in the participating institutions (Part 2) (iii) where applicable, modules which must be included in your certificate (Part 2). It is essential that you verify what FETAC (NCVA Level 5) certificate is required for the college course of your choice. Check certificate and module details with your PLC centre and the participating institutions. How does the application process work? Higher Education Links Scheme applicants submit their third-level applications to the CAO in the usual way. In July, FETAC results are issued to the CAO and the participating institutions. Applicants through the scheme are assessed as follows: Each module is credited, with three points allocated for a distinction, two points allocated for a merit and one point allocated for a pass. All of the points are totalled and applicants are ranked according to this “total grade point” figure. Places are offered in ranked order until the quota is complete for each course. Where can I get further information? The institutions’ prospectuses provide information on the scheme and the third-level courses. The admissions offices of the institutions can be contacted directly. Work Experience Work experience is an integral part of all our courses. The work placement provides students with an opportunity to apply newly acquired skills and greatly enhances their employment prospects. OverviewThis course is designed to cater for a broad spectrum of sport and leisure related activities. Graduates may seek a career in leisure, personal training, coaching, community and local authority based work and a range of careers in tourism and related fields. Practical aspects of the course take place in the new University of Limerick Arena. Facilities include 50m pool, aerobics studio, large well-equipped gymnasium and four full-size sports halls.

IntroductionIdeal for those interested in developing the stars of the future, Sports Coaching aims to develop coaching excellence through the understanding of several key areas including: coaching processes, teaching styles, management issues and scientific analysis. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on developing a range of professional and developmental skills, and the attainment of practical qualifications pertinent to this area of study. This innovative course provides a multi-disciplinary approach to analyzing and improving your performance as a coach and that of your athletes.

This course takes place primarily at the University of Limerick Arena where students have access to an olympic swimming pool, aerobic studio, well-equipped gymnasium and four full sized sports halls.

Possible career paths: Graduates may seek a career in leisure; personal training, coaching, community and local authority based work or a range of careers in tourism and related fields. Our courses have links with several institutes if technology and colleges of Education, where one can progress in other related fields.

IntroductionIn addition to the modules in Sports Coaching, those who opt for Sports Coaching - Rowing as a specialism, will complete the Rowing Coach Level 1 Certification, and will learn how to plan, organise and deliver effective rowing coaching sessions in the gym and on the water. The course covers practical coaching skills with substantial opportunity to practice and learn from hands-on activities.

Coaches will also gain real experience in local rowing clubs where they will assist and be mentored by experienced coaches. Other rowing related tasks will be undertaken such as the Umpires Examination and how to plan a rowing competition or event.

Coaches will complete the child protection awareness course fromthe local sports partnership.

CertificationThis specific module is certified by Rowing Ireland and Coaching Ireland.Successful candidates of Level 1, will be considered for Level 2 certification.

Students will also be equipped with the skills and knowledge to work competently with young children in a classroom setting. Students are required to attend work placement one day per week.

Graduates will also be fully qualified for work in créches, pre-school nurseries, and childcare facilities in community, local authority based schemes and similar facilities within the private sector.

OverviewSince its inception in 1993, this course has attracted both students who are interested in working with children and also those who are engaged in the delivery of childcare and pre-school education as a business, social or community service. The need to regulate the provision of such services, in order to ensure the highest possible standards of delivery, has created employment opportunities for qualified childcare graduates. Graduates work in nurseries, crèches, pre-schools and childcare facilities in community, local authority based schemes, and similar facilities within the private sector. With the knowledge and skills acquired on the course graduates can set up and develop their own business. OverviewWith a shift in focus towards mainstream education for Children with special needs the demand for fully qualified Special Needs Assistants (SNA’s) has increased. In addition to the mandatory Childcare modules, students receive a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of caring for Children with additional needs. Students are also required to attend work placement one day per week.

This course will enable graduates to work as Special Needs Assistants in Playschools, National and Post-primary schools throughout the Country. Graduates will also be fully qualified for work in créches, pre-schools, nurseries, and childcare facilities in community, local authority based schemes and similar facilities within the private sector.

OverviewThis course will be of interest to students who intend to pursue a career in nursing. Students receive a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of nursing care from essential nursing practices to specialised care. Development of practical skills and personal qualities is emphasized to equip students for further studies in nursing. Students will be given the opportunity to observe direct nursing care and to participate in nursing care as part of the Work Experience module.

The course equips graduates with skills enabling them to work in hospitals, retirement homes, in the community or as a Home Help. Holders of this qualification may apply for entry to courses in Applied Social Studies in Institutes of Technology through the Links Scheme. OverviewThis course provides students with fascinating insights into the health, care and welfare of a wide variety of animals from horses and dogs to birds and fish. Students receive a sound theoretical grounding in Animal Anatomy, Physiology and Biology. Emphasis is placed on ‘hands-on’ practical experience with animals during the work experience placement, and during field trips to veterinary clinics, dog grooming parlours and equine centres. The ‘Start Your Own Business’ module provides information about establishing your own business in the rapidly growing Animal Care Sector.
