Pleasant News

Kia ora tatou/ Greetings all

Best wishes for 2012 from your Residents’

Association – may the year bring better things

for us all as we either restore, repair, recover

or rebuild.

There are a number of things happening in

our community that I would invite you to par-

ticipate in. The regular fortnightly swap meets

are going well with garden abundance being

shared along with creations from swapees’

kitchens and bookshelves. Presently we are

meeting in front of the shops on Major Horn-

brook road until we can meet inside our tem-

porary community centre. There have been

discussions about setting up either a commu-

nity garden or a communal gardening group

for hill residents – see elsewhere in the news-

letter for details.

As a community we’ve been pretty good about

supporting and looking out for each other. To

celebrate our community’s strength the Asso-

ciation, in partnership with the school, has

organised a Pleasant Day Out from noon on

18 to noon on 19th Feb. We’d really love to

see as many of you there as possible even if

you cannot stay for the whole 24 hours of

music, food and fun!

As an Association we have supported the

Coastal Pathway Group, formed to develop

and promote the concept of a designated

pathway from Scarborough to Ferrymead

Bridge. This well designed and landscaped

pathway would provide a wide, safe pictur-

esque route for walkers, cyclists, skaters etc.

For more information on how you can support

this group see the notice elsewhere in this

newsletter.

Finally, our new website is up and running but

we’d love more visitors. Over the next month

all those who are on our email database will

go into a draw to win a prize – an opportunity

to treat yourself and your loved one as well as

hearing about the great things going on in

your community! See page 7 for details.

See you at the Pleasant Day Out!

Diary this date!

18 — 19 February

Pleasant Day Out, our annual community event on the hill, is go-

to, there will even be a chance to camp out (replicating the tent

city which sprang up on the eve of the February 22 last year). On

the Sunday morning we will have breakfast followed by more

events and a very special Remembrance service. To see the

day’s programme turn to page 2

Please note: This event supersedes the event which was to have

taken place on the 19th February as advertised in Summer Times

Argentinean empanadas

But we need help!!!!!!

Help us get organized for this great event—

please let us know if you would like a camping

space booked or if you can help us on any of the

ways listed below :

Tent City

As the music and entertainment will run until

late, there will be an opportunity for those who

want to camp overnight to do so. You can either

bring your own tent or book a space in one of

the large tents provided (sleeping arrangements

will be marae-style). As space is limited you will

need to reserve a spot for your tent or your

space in a communal tent. In recognition of the

effect the quake has taken on our community,

priority will be given to those who are currently

unable to live in their homes Continued next page

due to earthquake damage, so please include this

in your response if this is your situation. How-

ever we think there will be plenty of room for

everyone who wants to camp.

To book your spaces please email Corinne on

[email protected] .

Market Stalls

Space is available for people, organizations and

businesses to have a display stall on the 18th

from 12 noon until whenever you would like to

finish. The cost is $20.00 per table. Please

email [email protected] to register.

Helpers Needed

In addition to an international mix of food and

drink to purchase we will be running the tradi-

tional sausage sizzle, baking and candy floss

stalls to cover costs of the event. We therefore

need volunteers to work on rosters for the fol-

lowing jobs during the event:

· Sausage sizzle

· Candy floss stand

· Baking stall

· General help on the day

If you are able to help please email coordina-

[email protected] as soon as possible.

Baking Donations

If you are able to donate some baking to sell at

the event, please let Corinne know on

[email protected]. All money raised will

go back to the community association.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Please note: This event supersedes the event

which was to have taken place on the 19th Febru-

ary as advertised in Summer Times booklet.

Coastal Pathway

The Coastal Pathway Group was established in Sep-

tember of last year to bring to the attention of CCC

and CERA the importance of establishing a Coastal

Pathway along the water’s edge from Ferrymead

Bridge to Scarborough as part of the rebuild of

Christchurch. Cycling and walking facilities have

been identified as the two of the most desired im-

provements Christchurch residents are seeking as

part of the rebuild. CPG believes the pathway will

bring enormous benefits not only to local residents

but to all people living in Christchurch and therefore

we seek your help in gaining support for this project.

A pathway for this stunningly beautiful area has

been talked about for decades but CPG believes

now is the right time for it to be established given all

the repair work necessary around the proposed

route. However we realise that decision makers

face many deserving, competing priorities and

therefore we must demonstrate that this pathway is

wanted by the people of Christchurch. If you want to

help make this concept a reality please help us

gather signatures of support on the form on page 5

and return it to the address specified. Please also

consider becoming a paid up supporter—only $5.00

per household.

Mt Pleasant Presbyterian Church

Due to the extent of the damage to our church

building, Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church will

not be re-opened. We have decided to join in co-

operation with the Sumner-Redcliffs Union Parish

(Presbyterian-Methodist) which meets every Sun-

day at 10a.m., at the Union Church, 4 Augusta

St., Redcliffs. As always we offer an open, inclu-

sive and liberal form of Christianity, so anyone is

welcome to worship with us.

to attend..

Swap Meet

Fortnightly Sundays – 3 to 4pm in

front of the shops on Major Horn-

brook Rd. Bring something to swap

from your garden, your kitchen or

your bookshelf. A great way to

meet other people from the hill and

to gain variety in your diet! Next

one is Sunday 29th Jan followed by

Feb 12th.

Regular information about these

meets is to be found on our web-

site.

Communal Gardening

Sometimes it’s no fun gardening

alone – the jobs you hope to

achieve never seem to get finished

BUT with friends on the job you can

have fun & gain a sense of having

achieved something.

There’s been some talk of setting

up a community garden here like

those found in New Brighton,

Heathcote & Sumner but finding a

suitable site will take some time.

Another way of sharing skills, sweat

and crops is to form working-bee

groups of neighbours or interested

locals to move around each other’s

gardens to get jobs done. It may be

an opportunity to lend a hand to

neighbours who have had to tem-

porarily move away or are elderly to

get their gardens productive again.

Should you be interested in this

idea, please email

Report from your

C.E.R.A.

Community Rep.

The last meeting for 2011 was in

mid-December with Tony Maryatt,

CEO of CCC in attendance to pro-

vide us with a report on the Coun-

cil’s work so far and vision for the

rebuild. During the meeting several

community representatives shared

their insights into the issues their

particular community faces as a

result of the quakes. Mr Maryatt

responded to a number of the con-

cerns expressed and was very clear

in his desire to see processes or

services, like consents expediated.

The Community Forum meets for

the first time in 2012 on Thur 2nd

Feb and fortnightly after that. Min-

utes and notes from each formal

meeting are now on the CERA web-

site http://cera.govt.nz/community

Residential

Boundaries for Mt

Pleasant

Many in our community do

not realize that they live

within the Mt Pleasant Resi-

dents’ Association bounda-

ries because the live on Bal-

moral hill or some other dif-

ferently named hill. The offi-

cially recognized CCC

boundaries of the Mt Pleas-

ant Residents’ Association

are: the area bounded on

the east by Balmoral Lane

up to the Summit Road,

along Summit Road, and on

the west from Summit Road

down the Spur along Bridle

Path Road to Heathcote river

mouth, along the Heathcote

River to the junction of Ferry

Road and Charlesworth

Street, along Charlesworth

Street to Linwood Avenue,

along Linwood Avenue, Hum-

phreys Drive, Tidal View

Road, Heathcote Bridge and

Main Road to Balmoral

Lane.

Part of Balmoral Hill and

Moncks Spur Road is also

recognized by CCC as a

shared area with Redcliffs

Residents’ Association so

residents in these areas

have two Associations work-

ing on their behalf!

Become a member of the

Mt Pleasant Residents’

Association

With the loss of the Community Centre

the Association has virtually no income

to do its work needed by the commu-

nity. We therefore very much welcome

your financial support over the coming

year. There are meetings to be had,

events to organise and newsletters to

publish all with on-going costs. Please

support us to support you— the cost is

only $15.00 per annum per house-

hold. To join the Association simply fill

out the form on page 10 and post to

where you will find a download for join-

ing.

Are you receiving MPCC

emails?

According to the 2006 Census data

pre-quake there were 1647 house-

holds in Mt Pleasant. Of these 1308

were on the internet. We currently

have 540 households signed up to

our email database so many house-

holds are currently missing out on

receiving their local news and info.

So to encourage those of you who

have not yet taken the plunge to sign

up for our free email newsletter we

are offering everyone who is signed

up by 29 February the chance to win

a dinner for two at Flames restaurant

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The first principle of Civil Defence Emergency Manage-

ment is self reliance. It is vital that we stay prepared as

individuals. You will find enclosed a Household Check-

list. This is a great way to check how prepared you are.

Our copy lives on the fridge. I hope you find it helpful

too. If you have vital medications, maintain a minimum

supply of 2 weeks.

In the event of an emergency, after ensuring your

household and family are OK, the next step is to check

on neighbours. The Residents’ Association have been

actively promoting Neighbourhood Support which is a

great way to get to know your neighbours and build

support networks before you need them. Please con-

sider joining your local support network or becoming a

street co-ordinator. For more information contact

[email protected] or phone 384-2160

IN AN EMERGENCY Mt Pleasant School will serve as a

co-ordination point for

Temporary accommodation

Emergency catering

First aid

Establishing communication lines with Civil Defence

and Emergency Services

If you need more help than you and your neighbours

can manage, go to the Mt Pleasant School where a co-

ordinated response will be occurring. If you are not

needed at home or by neighbours, and are in a position

to help, go to the school where your assistance can be

re-directed. If you have skills or resources that may be

of particular help in the given situation please make

this known to the response team at Mt Pleasant

School.

This is a community initiative run by our people, for our

people. It is not a council or Civil Defence run response.

It relies on the contribution and co-operation of resi-

dents and organizations within our community in the

first instance. The response center is intended as a way

to collaborate as a community, to support and serve

each other if emergency services are delayed or over-

whelmed.

A community response plan has been drafted in asso-

ciation with Mt Pleasant Residents’ Association, Mt

Pleasant School, Neighbourhood Support, and Mt

Pleasant Medical Center. This outlines the plan for

2012, developing community resilience and how to

respond in the event of an emergency. This will be pre-

sented at the Pleasant Day Out on February 18th/19th,

and made available for general viewing in the near fu-

ture.

We now need a core team of 10 volunteers to make up

the ‘response team’. They will meet regularly through-

out 2012 to roll out the plan, develop community resil-

ience and awareness and run the response center in

the event of an emergency. Training can be arranged

but a cross section of people with skills or experience in

disaster response, management, IT, security, reception,

welfare, trades, emergency services, medical, outdoor

leadership etc would be advantageous.

If you feel you have something to offer, would like to get

more involved in the community, meet some fantastic

new people, and be of service to others, please contact

Robin Arnold 9802890 or e-mail [email protected]

for more details. You would need to be able to make

yourself available in an emergency and be primarily

based in Mt Pleasant.

Register your interest now, first meeting early February.

Kia Kaha Mt Pleasant!

Robin Arnold.

What the latest with our

Community Centre?

At the close of last year the Residents’ Association

was delighted to be informed that we had successful

applied for a grant of $25,000 from the Vodafone

Earthquake fund to help us develop a concept plan for

the our replacement community centre. This was

great news just when we were all starting to feel that

the rebuilding process was going nowhere. As a result

of the grant we have called for Mt Pleasant based

architects to submit their portfolios if interested in

securing the architectural contract. We received three

applications and are now in the process of determin-

ing which of those three will be awarded the contract.

Once the architect is chosen we will be contacting all

interested residents and groups to help us develop

the concept brief.

Thank you Vodafone—what a great Christmas present!
