The Readings
Psalm 31.1-5, 15-16 Said responsively Book of Alternative services p.740
1 In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge;let me never be put to shame; *deliver me in your righteousness.
2 Incline your ear to me; *
make haste to deliver me.
3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my stronghold; *for the sake of your name, lead me and guide me.
4 Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, *
for you are my tower of strength.
5 Into your hands I commend my spirit, *
for you have redeemed me,
O Lord, O God of truth.
15 My times are in your hand; *
rescue me from the hand of my enemies,
and from those who persecute me.
16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, *
and in your loving-kindness save me.”
Glory to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as
it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen
New Testament Reading(Read in French)
Reader: A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the glory of
God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I see the
heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" But
they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against
him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the
witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While
they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Then
he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin
against them." When he had said this, he died.

HYMN 237
Now the Green Blade Rises
A Reading from the Gospel of John (John 14.1-14)
Jesus said, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God,
believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling
places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a
place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come
again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may
be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going."
Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going.
How can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and
the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through
me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you
do know him and have seen him." Philip said to him, "Lord, show us
the Father, and we will be satisfied.”
Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you
still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am
in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do
not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his
works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but
if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.
Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the
works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because
I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so
that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me
for anything, I will do it."
Reader: The Word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God.
A short time of silence is observed to ponder the readings and psalms.
Homily The Rev. Deborah Noonan
The Apostles’ Creed Book of Alternative services p.53
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.

HYMN 399
Now Thank We All Our God
Leader: As God’s dwelling place here on earth, let us pray for the
church.
Prayers for the church are offered
Living God, our life is in your hands, and we offer you all
that we are, all that our past has made us, and all that we
may become.
Build us up by the power of your Spirit into a spiritual
temple where you are glorified day after day, in all our
praise and worship, and in our love for one another.
You are my strong rock:
All: My rock and my salvation.
The Prayers of the People
Leader: As one human family, given shelter on this sacred earth, let us
pray for the world.
Prayers for the world are offered
Living God, our planet, with its frenzied life on its fragile skin, is
unnervingly small and especially vulnerable now to sickness and
death. Hasten to teach us to protect the vulnerable, to give
thanks for those whose willingness to serve has strengthened
our hospitals and long-term care facilities, guide us always in
your way. Guide our leaders in the way of truth and life.
You are my strong rock:
All: My rock and my salvation..
Leader: Loving God, heavenly Father, today we thank you for all mothers in the world, for all that that they do, all they give and all they are. We also thank you for all those who look after, care for, nurture and love us as a mother.
We know that today can be a difficult time; bringing hurt, grief and perhaps anger to some whose hearts are broken because of disappointments and hurts, and mothers who have recently died. We pray that you will comfort all that are hurting today and surround them with your tender care.
Nurturing God, You are my strong rock:
All: My rock and my salvation.
Leader: As ones whose hearts are troubled, we pray for the sick and
the suffering.
The names of the sick and suffering are offered
I invite your prayers and petitions, spoken aloud or offered in silence.
Please offer your prayers, as the Spirit moves you
Leader: Living God, we have offered the names of those dear to us.
Strengthen and relieve them in this time of trouble. Bring help
to those who care for them, and comfort to those whose care
and anxiety is heightened in these times.
You are my strong rock:
All: My rock and my salvation.
Leader: As ones seeking the way, that we may dwell with you forever,
we pray for the dead.
The names of those who have died are offered
Leader: Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord.
All: And let light perpetual shine upon them.
Leader: May they rest in peace and rise in Christ’s glory. Bless and
comfort their loved ones and lead us all to our eternal home.
You are my strong rock:
All: My rock and my salvation.
Leader: Living God, we thank you for showing us the Way. Merciful
Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our
Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, One God, world without end.
All: Amen.
Officiant: As our Saviour Christ has taught us, let us pray:
All: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever,
Amen.
