1286 In the Old Testament the prophets announced that the Spirit of the Lord would rest on the hoped-for Messiah for His saving mission. The descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus at His Baptism by John was the sign that this was He Who was to come, the Messiah, the Son of God. READINGS FOR

24 November 2019 Thirty-Fourth Sunday

in Ordinary Time

1st Reading: II Samuel V: 1-3

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 122 2nd Reading: Colossians I: 12-20 Gospel: Saint Luke XXIII: 35-43

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

“You will be hated by all because of My Name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed” (Luke 21:5-19). In the Gospel we read today the Lord warns us about persecutions, violence, trials, and even death. This is a very sobering picture to consider as we arrive at the conclusion of the liturgical year and reflect upon the “last things,” and yet, there is no

reason to fear, Jesus Himself will give us words and wisdom, which our adversaries will not be able to take exception to or contradict. These words of Jesus are very real in our world. We are surrounded by persecution. The twenty-first century has already seen many martyrs, some known and some unknown. All these, although they knew their lives were in danger, never stopped doing their jobs and helping their people. They continued to preach the Gospel by the way they lived their lives. They continued to see Jesus in the poor and they were faithful to Him to the end. How did they do it? God gave them the grace they needed. They often turned to Mary, who was able to bear the agonizing persecution of her son because she was full of grace. Let us continue to pray to her to intercede for us sinners, so that we too may receive the grace we need right now. AMEN.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

FATHER JEROME IS GETTING READY TO RETURN TO GHANA In just about two weeks, our beloved Priest and friend Father Jerome, will be returning to Ghana. Father Jerome’s relationship with Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport “officially” began shortly after my June 2008 arrival as Pastor. Within months of that arrival, Bishop-emeritus Murphy appointed him Chaplain to South Nassau Communities Hospital, with residency at Our Holy Redeemer. The rest (as they say) is history.

The close relationship shared with us and Father Jerome manifested itself last year when the Parish of Our Holy Redeemer offered to help him meet the challenges of a decaying Nursery School Building. That offer (as readers of last Sunday’s “Message from the Pastor” were reminded) was accepted by The Most Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie, C.S.Sp., (Father Jerome’s Bishop at the time), and in Lent 2019, the Church in Freeport began to “officially” pray, fast, and give alms for the “Our Holy Redeemer Nursery School” in Ghana.

In the letter that follows this message, Father Jerome describes the growing spiritual and material needs (a good sign) of the Our Holy Redeemer Nursery School. Our sacrificial giving

during last year’s Holy Season of Lent will help him to meet those needs upon his return to his parish in Ghana; so please: if you have not yet returned your 2019 Lenten-mite boxes please bring them to the rectory this week. Thank you.

17 NOVEMBER 2019

AN UPDATE FROM FATHER JEROME

Peace be to you, all good Parishioners of Our Holy Redeemer!

I would like to take this opportunity given to me by our Pastor Fr. Douglas Arcoleo to thank him in a special way that he gave me another opportunity to come home this year. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and support.

Our Holy Redeemer Nursery School at Saint Mary’s Parish in Samreboi, Ghana is still alive and functioning! The children and their educators are doing well in mind and body as far as their health is concern. Their educators are doing their best to help them acquire the necessary knowledge with the help of the Church as its primary benefactor and supervisor.

The nursery has seen some maintenance such as the floor, the windows, painting and some part of the roofing sheets have been changed. Until a new nursery can be built (with the help of your 2018 Lenten-project contributions (I am still unpacking the Mite Boxes), the old structure is still being maintained to avoid total destruction of by the strong winds and the rains that are a common occurrence in Ghana.

The nursery school has also received a lot of materials and supplies for teaching and learning, along with games and basic First Aid items from Our Holy Redeemer Parish Human Services. In this regard, Mr. Martinez has been very helpful.

The population or the intake of the children have increased due to the fact that every child has to go to school so that the streets may be free without children. The nursery enrolls children up to grades classified as: KG1, A, B,C and KG2. This year’s student population is as follows:

KG1A has 10boys; 14girls

KG1B has 20boys; 20girls

KG1C has 20boys; 22girls

KG2 has 22boys ; 22girls

In total there are 150 children, and 5 teachers /educators. The youngest age is 3 years and the oldest is 11 years. With the Good News of an increase in school-population comes the need for more material support that can help provide desks, chair, and tables.

I hope that the with the love and support of Father Arcoleo who is interested in the education of the children, and with your love and support as well, the new OHR Nursery School in Ghana- St. Mary Parish in Samreboi will have its foundation laid and building started when I return to Ghana on 01 December 2019.

May the Good Lord bless all the families in Our Holy Redeemer Church, where coming homing is what it’s all about. I wished I could celebrate the Christmas with you but unfortunately I have to ask of leave of you. I pray that I will have the opportunity to be with you in the Summer. MERRY CHRITMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL.

Let us keep one another in prayers. PEACE BE WITH YOU!

FILM Selection Of The Week Lourdes. A Story of Faith, Science and Mirracles Bernard Guillaumet, a non-Christian French journalist, is assigned the job of doing a story on Lourdes in the late 1990s. Just before he leaves for Lourdes, Bernard learns that his wife is pregnant. However, he is not told that this pregnancy could put her

life at risk--and that doctors are suggesting an abortion.

Excerpt from the book, The Interior Life Simplified and

Reduced to Its Fundamental Principle Written by an unnamed Capuchin monk in the 19th century

The Seven Sacraments.—There are seven Sacraments, i.e., seven springs of life, answering to the wants of my terrestrial existence. First of all, the initial Sacrament that sows the seeds of eternity, Baptism, which changes a child of Adam into a Christian, a child of God, of the Church, and of eternity. Confirmation fructifies the baptismal seeds by bringing to the soul the seven gifts of the life-giving Spirit. The Eucharist feeds the holy growth with a substance which is none other than the very substance of the Son of God and the Son of man, the Sovereign food of the divine life and of the human life in the Christian, since Jesus Christ has the fullness of the divine life and the human life. Penance repairs what is damaged, and cures what is diseased; it even brings back from death, since it wipes out mortal sin, which is the death of the soul…Then there is Extreme Unction, the last of our earth-life’s consecrations and purifications, and the preparation for the life eternal, when the soul is standing on tis threshold. Lastly, there are two Sacraments which continue and preserve the Sacred seed. Holy Order, which consecrates those who are to propagate the divine life, and Holy Marriage, which consecrates those who are to propagate human life…

FAITH AND FINANCES SINCE COMMITMENT WEEKEND

AN UPDATE (AS OF 05 NOVEMBER 2019) ABOUT THE BELL TOWER RESTORATION PROJECT

As you can see from the 2018/2019 CMA-comparison below, we have a lot of catching up to do. And while I am confident (especially in the aftermath of Bishop Barres’ “you gotta believe” homily at his Sunday, 01 September’s 11:30 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. Masses) that we will reach and surpass our CMA goal for the 11th consecutive year, I am encouraging those of you who have not yet made your pledge to please do so today! Once we achieve our goal in paid pledges ($78,800.00), the Diocese will return to us 80% of every dollar paid over goal. That 80% will be used to help offset the “still-to-be-determined” cost of our Bell Tower Restoration Project.

Directions: Find the words below from today’s Scripture reading in the puzzle. Words can go horizontally, vertically, and diagonally in all directions (as shown).

While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said,

"All that you see here--the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown

down." Then they asked Him, "Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?" He answered, "See that you

not be deceived, for many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He,' and 'The time has

come.' Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be

terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the

end." Then He said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against

kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.”

Saint Luke XXI: 5-10

(As Described in the Catechism of the Catholic Church)

1285 Baptism, the Eucharist, and the Sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the "Sacraments of Christian initiation," whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For "by the Sacrament of Confirmation, [the Baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed."

I. CONFIRMATION IN THE ECONOMY OF SALVATION

He was conceived of the Holy Spirit; His whole life and His whole mission are carried out in total communion with the Holy Spirit Whom the Father gives Him "without measure."
