FROM THE PASTOR

This week sees the celebrations of two important saints: St. Mary Magdalene on Wednesday, July 22 and St. Bridget of Sweden on Thursday, July 23.

Of course, we all know St. Mary Magdalene. Scripture identifies her as one of the disciples who followed Jesus. In the Gospels of Mark and Luke, she is identified as having had seven demons cast out of her. She is most prominent, however, in the accounts of the Crucifixion (at which she was present) and the Resurrection. The Gospels identify her as the first person or one of the first to see Jesus after the Resurrection. In John 20:17, Christ charges her with bearing the news of the Resurrection to the apostles and other disciples.

In the Middle Ages, a conflation occurred in which Mary Magdalene was linked to the woman caught in adultery (whom Jesus saved from being stoned to death), and the woman who anointed Jesus' feet at Bethany, as well as with Mary of Bethany, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. This is where the notion that Mary Magdalene had been a prostitute arose. It is important to note, however, that nothing in Scripture supports this view. There is Scriptural support to the notion that Mary Magdalene and Mary of Bethany (sister of Martha and Lazarus) are the same person. It is interesting to note that while St. Martha has a Memorial Mass dedicated to her, her sister Mary (whom, if you recall, Jesus said chose the better part) does not. That's because we've long understood that Mary of Bethany and Mary Magdalene are the same person.

Due to her role in announcing the Resurrection to Peter and the other apostles, Mary Magdalene has been known, since at least the 12th century, as apostolorum apostola (apostle of the apostles). On June 10, 2016, the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments issued a decree elevating her day from the rank of Obligatory Memorial to Feast. The current readings, Mass texts, and Office were not altered, but a Gloria will now be recited at Mass and a proper Preface was issued (which will have to be translated into English).

Saturday, July 23 is Memorial of St. Bridget of Sweden, one of the patron saints of Europe. She had been a wife and the mother of eight children. Following her husband's death when she was 41 years old, Bridget experienced a vision of Christ who instructed her to found a new religious order for women, the Order of the Most Holy Savior (commonly called the Brigittines). Partly in order to obtain approval for the new order, partly to work for peace among the great powers of the time, and partly to work for the return of the Pope from Avignon, Bridget set out for Rome in 1349 and never returned to Sweden.

Bridget died in Rome in 1373. She never the saw the abbey and religious order she founded. She never saw the peace for which she worked come into reality. She did not live to see the return of the Pope from Avignon. When she died, she was an apparent failure at everything she set out to do. In this, of course, she was united to Christ on the Cross. After her death, however, her religious order expanded and is active today in Sweden, Spain, Italy, the United States, and Mexico. Peace finally did come between France and England, and the Pope finally did return to Rome from Avignon.
