The colonists began protesting about the loss of their rights as Englishmen and against taxation without representation.

TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION: The colonists were being forced to pay taxes levied by Parliament. Parliament did NOT include any representatives from the American colonies. Under English law, as stated in the Magna Carta and English Bill of Right, citizens of England could not be taxed if they were not represented in Parliament.
