Former USHL defenseman suits up with father’s former NHL club

Defenseman Philip Samuelsson saw his first NHL action on Monday night when he suited up for the Pittsburgh Penguins dur-ing their 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Samuelsson logged 15:43 minutes of ice time after being called up from their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The debut was historical as his father, Ulf Samuelsson, helped the Penguins capture back-to-back Stanley Cup champi-onships in 1991 and 1992, and they became the fifth father-son duo to have played for the organization.

Philip spent the 2008-09 season in the USHL with the Chicago Steel, dishing out 22 assists over 54 regular season games. Following that season, he was selected by the Penguins in the second round (61st overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft. He was the fourth-highest USHL player selected that year, joining his Steel teammate John Moore

who was chosen in the first round (21st overall to Columbus).

After his season in the USHL, Samuelsson spent two seasons of NCAA hockey at Boston College which included helping the team capture the NCAA Championship in 2010. He produced 30 points (5g, 25a) over 81 games at the school before signing a NHL contract in the spring of 2011. The defense-man had recorded six assists and a plus-three rating in 26 AHL games this season at the time of his call-up.

Philip’s younger brother, Henrik, also played in the USHL, suiting up for Team USA during the 2010-11 season and recording 11 points (4g, 7a) over 27 USHL contests. He was selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round (27th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.

Two other USHL alumni were in the lineup for the Penguins during Philip Samuelsson’s NHL debut - Jayson Megna (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 2009-11) and Joe Vitale (Sioux Falls Stampede, 2004-05)).

Win, lose, or tie, even with the fiercest rival-ries, hockey families share a common bond -the love of the game. Hockey families have always come together to support each other in tough times. Sunday’s storms in Central Illinois around the Peoria area left several hockey families homeless.

The Peoria Youth Hockey Association (PYHA) is asking for your support. Please join us in helping the hockey families in our area that lost or had their homes severely dam-aged. The short term needs are being taken care of by the Red Cross and various support organizations.

The longer term needs are yet to be deter-

mined but we know with the holidays upon us there will be additional financial con-straints to these families. PYHA is organizing a gift card and fund raising effort. The goal is to help the kids keep playing hockey and return to a somewhat normal routine during this time.

We are asking for gift cards to Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, Wal-Mart , and Target, etc. You may drop off a gift card at Owens Center Ice Rink in Peoria or mail to:

Brandon Bollig was born and raised in St. Louis.

That meant two things when it came to hockey. He loved the Blues and didn’t have the same feelings about the rival Blackhawks.

“St. Louis has a passionate fan base and I did not particularly like the Blackhawks,” Bollig said.

How things have changed as Bollig became the first St. Louis born and raised player to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup after the Blackhawks captured

the coveted trophy in 2013.“It is ironic how I ended up here,” said

the 26-year-old left-winger who was not drafted.

There may have been a couple of signs in the Bollig household though when Brandon was a youngster.

Dad, Dale, and Mom, Tracy, had similar feelings to Brandon about their favorite National Hockey League squads.

But there was one thing that they did like and that was the Blackhawk logo.

“Dad made area rugs and the one rug that we had was the Chicago Blackhawks one,” Brandon said. “He liked the Indian head. And Mom never bought any beach towels but the one I remember having when I was a young kid was one of the Blackhawks.”

Call it an omen but Bollig has never played for another organization in his young NHL career.

Amateur hockey is quite popular and competitive in the St. Louis area and Bollig grew up playing high school hockey at Francis Howell North, where he graduated in 2005 with a 3.4 grade point average. He played with the successful Jr. Blues and then played with the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League.

Bollig decided to go the collegiate route and attended St. Lawrence University, where he was on the Dean’s list, and a mem-ber of the hockey team for a couple of years.

The 6-foot-2, 223-pound “tough” guy was not drafted but signed a contract with the

Blackhawks in April of 2010.

“It may have been a blessing in disguise when I was not draft-ed,” Bollig said. “I was able to go to an orga-nization where I felt I

would fit in.”And boy did Bollig fit in. He played a cou-

ple of years with the Blackhawks’ American Hockey League affiliate in Rockford and played his first NHL game on leap day (Feb. 29) in 2012.

It did not take Bollig long to experience the penultimate feeling of any boy grow-ing up playing the sport as he held up the Stanley Cup last winter after the Blackhawks clinched the title with a win at Boston.

“It’s a feeling I will never be able to explain and love to relive,” Bollig said of lifting the most precious of sport’s trophies during the celebration on Boston ice. “It was like an out of body experience.”

And one he was able to celebrate not only with his teammates but with several members of his family from the St. Louis area.

“The team was so gracious in fly-ing out families to Boston in case we won there,” Bollig said. “My dad could not come but my Mom, sis-ter, niece and nephew were there on the ice as we took the team photo. It was so much more special to see how happy my family was to see me fulfill a dream.”

Bollig takes great pride in becom-ing the first St. Louis native to have his name on the Stanley Cup. He took it to the St. Peters Rec-Plex during the summer to let St. Louis see the Cup first-hand (the Blues have yet to win the Stanley Cup).

“I remember having my picture taken with some of the Blues when I was a kid,” Bollig said. “And now I am having kids take pictures with me. It is just crazy that I was the first

player from St. Louis to win the Cup. When I was watching NHL games when I was younger I felt there was no way that I could do that. Never in a million years when I was in college or the pros or even in the NHL that I would be the first one.”

Bollig and the Blackhawks entered play a week before Christmas with the best record in the NHL as they try for a repeat.

“I love the fact that we are Stanley Cup champions,” Bollig said. “But the coaches stressed from the first day of training camp that last year was last year and that the book was closed on last season and that we had to open a new book.”

That book has had a good start as teams begin to approach the halfway mark. Bollig hopes for a similar ending and he does so with a different role on the team.

He is still a rough-and-tumble player who will look after his teammates but he has also been taking a regular shift on the fourth line with Marcus Kruger and Ben Smith.

“My role has definitely changed this year,” Bollig said. “Last year I was more of a one-dimensional player. But Marcus, Ben and I have been together for awhile now and we are logging more minutes, playing against a lot of the No. 1 and 2 lines of our opponents. Our focus is on defense but we have also been able to chip in offensively.”

Bollig has played in all of the 37 Chicago games this season and has contributed three goals and five assists to go along with his 59 penalty minutes.

Goals, they are the lifeblood of the game of hockey. It takes an enormous amount of skill to put a puck past a goaltender. Chicago Hawks forward Nicholas Cardelli has that knack of scoring goals, and after two weeks of leading the Hawks scoring barrage, Cardelli is this weeks Central States Developmental Player of the Week.

Cardelli, a high school junior from Wood Dale, Illinois, scored eight goals in three games this week and last week blasted nine markers in three games to lead the Hawks to a current record of 29-5-2 and a number one ranking in the MYHockey USA hockey rankings for Tier 2 Midget Minors.

The 5’ 9’, 175 pound winger has a great combination of the skill-sets. His ice vision, how he plays all three zones, and obviously the hands and goal scor-ing touch evoke a com-plete player. But head coach Jonathon Hull sees a lot more in his top scoring forward. As he blossoms into a great all around player, his work ethic is prob-ably his greatest asset.

“Nick has great work habits on the ice and his attitude towards the game and his teammates is one of the reasons this team is having such a great year,” said Hull, who has watched his Central States team roll to a 12-3-2 start in the midget minor league schedule.

Hull sees Cardelli, a USHL futures pick of the Tri City Storm a year ago, as a future player in the United States’ top tier junior league.

“We have been blessed with a group of great kids this year and I could see a few of them moving on,” said Hull, now in his second season leading the hockey revival of the Hawks midget program.

“And look for Nick to definitely move on in his hockey playing days.’’

The Blackhawks 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™ uniforms utilize colors with-in the teams’ existing color palates. Each jersey features chrome-treated logo designs that are unique to the NHL Stadium Series and inspired from the chrome details in the

NHL® shield, bringing a dynamic and modern perspective to conventional team identities. The chrome crest was developed using new technology that fuses print and embroidery and allows logos to be displayed as a high-resolution image incorporated into the crest. This technology also reduces the weight of the crest, resulting in a lightweight jersey to help improve athlete performance.

The Skokie Flyers played their way to an undefeated title at the St. Louis Ice Blast Tournament.

“We had a lot of things come out of the tournament. We played we’ll and we hoped to carry it through to our regular season,” Assistant Coach Lary Grimaldi said. “Our third periods were big this tourna-ment.”

The Flyers, giving up only seven goals all weekend, soared past their opponents in the preliminary round to land in the winner-take-all Squirt Bronze champion-ship game. The Flyers defeated the Affton Americans 6-2 on the first night of the tournament and were able to carry their strong game play through the rest of the weekend.

The Flyers secured a 6-1 win against the St. Peters Spirit on Saturday morning, and rounded out the preliminary matches with a sound 6-1 victory over the Pekin Dragons.

Solid goaltending and teamwork landed the Flyers in the top spot for the Sunday champion-ship game against the only other undefeat-ed tour-n a m e n t team, the M e r a m e c Sharks.

“Our big goal scorer is Toran B a i l e y , ” G r i m a l d i said. “He’s the muscle behind us, he scores most of our goals and Liam Hennessey had a good tournament too. He had one game with 2 assists and another game with 3 assists. I think he even scored 2 goals in the championship game. And our defense played phenomenal. Our defense shut down the teams pretty well.”

Goaltender Dominic Grimaldi defended the Flyers’ net for the first two periods of

the championship game.“It was a little nerve wracking for a little

bit there,” Coach Grimaldi said about the championship against the Sharks. “It was pretty tight for most of the first half of the game. It was 2-1 for a while, almost two whole periods, and then I don’t know what happened. We started playing hard, blew it wide open, they couldn’t get in the zone and we took home the championship. It was pretty nice.”

Dominic Grimaldi let up his only goal for the tournament in the championship game.

“He made about 13 saves going into the third period, when we were up 4-1, and we switched goaltenders for the third peri-od,” Coach Grimaldi said. “Then we scored another quick one and I think at that point we breathed a little bit.”

The Flyers won the championship game 8-3.

The Skokie Flyers Squirt Champions are Toran Bailey, Dylan Cohan, Charlie Duffy,

Alex Feuer, Benjamin Ford, Dominic Grimaldi, Liam Hennessy, Oleksandr Khabenyuk, Justin Lynch, Brendan Mack, Ethan Mogan, Jaden Sauer, John Wernecke and Marios Yfantis.

The coaches are Igor Piatigorsky and Lary Grimaldi and the team manager is Diane Lynch.

The Romeoville Huskies Bantam A team traveled to the Wisconsin Dells and came home Tournament Champs!

The Huskies finished round robin play with a 2-1 record, and their lone setback to the Wayzata Yellow Bantams from Minnesota, who finished the preliminary round with a perfect 3-0 record.

The Huskies were looking for a little revenge on Championship Sunday, how-ever Wayzata scored an early first period goal from Colin Packard, set up on a beau-tiful pass by Nathan Raska, and just as in Saturday’s game, the 1st period ended 1-0 Wayzata.

With no scoring in the second period, Huskies head coach Don Lewis, would have to figure out something in the 3rd period, as his Huskies hadn’t scored on Wayzata in 5 straight periods. Just two minutes into

the third, Jack Kroll tallied a goal on a Jake Bugajsky pass to tie the game at 1-1. The game would remain tied until just under 2 minutes left in regulation when Jack Kroll set up Mateusz Sak for the game winner.

The Huskies Bantam A Champs are Jake Bugajsky, Anthony Carcerano, Sal Carcerano, Scott Clarke, Eric Gasienica, Jared Heavens, Dylan Horbenko, Tom Kelly, Jack Kroll, Ryan Payne, Matt Quinn, Luke Rohrbacher, Mateusz Sak, Lincoln Soper, Nick Vourtsis, and Joey Woodrum.

The head coach is Don Lewis and the assistants are Craig Heavens, Nick Horbenko and Steve Payne.

The Elmhurst Chiefs Black Squirt hockey team spends a good portion of their practice time on shooting.

That proved to be a good thing as the Chiefs won the championship game of the Dells Waterpark Classic by dominating the shootout against the Kirkwood (Mo.) Stars.

“The kids like to shoot instead of skating around cones all of the time,” Elmhurst coach Rick Wilbert said.

Just getting to the shootout was a huge accom-plishment for the Chiefs, who trailed Kirkwood 2-0 with less than three minutes remaining in the title game.

“I talked to our defensemen with about five minutes to go and stressed to them the impor-tance of keeping the puck in at all costs,” Wilbert said. “We needed to take some chances.”

It would pay off as Greg Lee finally got the Chiefs on the scoreboard with 2:43 remaining in regulation as he picked up the puck in the corner and beat the Kirkwood goalie on the shortside.

Wilbert would take a timeout at the next whis-tle and set up the strategy with pulling the goalie.

Ben Foley, “Foley the Goalie”, was pulled with about a minute and a half remaining and the Chiefs had good puck possession and had several dramatic keep-ins at the point.

They would finally get the equalizer as Andrew Hoffing knocked in a rebound on a shot from Richie Wilbert with just 26 seconds left.

The teams would play a four-on-four sudden death overtime period with the Chiefs having a four-on-three advantage for the final 40 seconds after a Kirkwood penalty.

Both teams had good scoring chances but neither could score which set up the

shootout to determine the tournament champion.

The Chiefs would shoot first in the shootout and they took immediate con-trol in the four rounds as Lee scored. Foley followed with a save off of Kirkwood’s Nick Salthouse, who had scored six goals in the two games against Elmhurst in the tournament including both in the

championship game.Hoffing and Nicky Clemente would add goals

on the next two tries for the Chiefs while Foley made another save as Elmhurst prevailed 3-0 in the shootout.

There were 18 teams from five states in the tournament with four teams in the Chiefs’ brack-et. Elmhurst outscored West Madison (WIS) and Washington County (WIS) by a combined score of 16-1 in round robin play but fell to Kirkwood 6-1.

Foley was ill for that game as Wilbert filling in goal. Kirkwood was thus the top seed coming out of round-robin play.

“The kids were hungry to play them again and it was a great game,” Wilbert said.

The game was scoreless through two periods before Salthouse, who had scored four goals and added two assists, in the round-robin win scored a pair of third period goals for the Stars.

It looked like those would hold up until the two goals in the final three minutes and then the dominant performance in the shootout by the Chiefs.

L’Esperance picks up his second consecu-tive Forward of the Week honor after record-ing five goals over three games. After being held off the score sheet in Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to the Omaha Lancers, the 18-year-old bounced back with a hat trick, including the game-winner in overtime, in Friday’s 6-5 overtime win against the Youngstown Phantoms. He scored the three goals three different ways – power play, shorthanded, and even strength. His hot hand contin-ued on Saturday as he netted two more to lead the Storm to a 3-1 win and weekend sweep of the Phantoms. The Michigan Tech University commit has been on a tear as of late, totaling nine goals over his last four games. His 25 points (18g, 7a) over 26 games ties him for seventh in USHL scoring, and the 18 goals for the Brighton, Michigan native ties him for second in the League.

Payne was instrumental in helping the Steel earn three victories, tallying five points (4g, 1a) and registering a plus-five on-ice rating. On Tuesday, the Gaylord, Michigan native scored a power play goal in the 6-3 win over the Green Bay Gamblers. He found the back of the net again and tied a game-high plus-two rating in Friday’s 4-1 victory against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. The 20-year-old capped off his career week with a pair of goals and an assist in a 6-4 win versus the Muskegon Lumberjacks. The Northern Michigan University commit is riding a six-game goal streak, recording seven of his eight goals this season during that span. Payne has produced 12 points (8g, 4a) over 22 games during his first USHL season.
