God works in mysterious ways. We inthe Executive can be surprised by that.Remember that though we try our best,it is God’s work.

WWe will have a Display Stallagain, helpers very welcome.

You will need a Pass to get to wherethe stall is, deadline 29th January.Email passport type photo [email protected] you just want to listen in to pro-ceedings from the Visitors Galleryyou can get a Visitors Pass just bygoing to the door to Church Houseround the corner in in Great SmithStreet.

This will be the third General Synod wehave been at recently; York last July; lastNovember in Westminster for just oneday, sharing the Stall with Sue Claydon ofthe Anglican Pacifist Fellowship. Sue gotSynod Member Janet Perrett, from herDiocese, Ely, to ask a Question:'Noting that the Archbishops’ Councilwrote to the Secretary of State forDefence in March 2007, and that the UKParliament is due to debate the MainGate decision on Trident renewal atsome point in 2016, would theArchbishops’ Council again draw theattention of HMG to the General Synodmotion of February 2007 and in particu-lar to the amendment that was passed to“suggest to Her Majesty’s Governmentthat the proposed upgrading of Trident iscontrary to the spirit of the UnitedKingdom’s obligations in internationallaw and to the ethical principles under-pinning them”.

‘Questions’ are a bit of the synod agendawhere questions are submitted inadvance, it’s a way of bringing up mattersto Synod’s attention, if you don’t think a

Private Members Bill doesn’t have muchhope of success. Our Question wasaccepted, so that was stage one. Most ofthe earlier questions had two verbalSupplementary Questions asked, all a wayof raising the profile of the issue. Ourshad one, by our sponsor, the Rt Revd PaulBayes Bishop of Liverpool. I didn’t man-age to note down his question but after-wards I asked his PA who said: ‘BishopPaul would be happy to sponsor the stallagain at the next Synod. He also wantedto let you know that he is due to meetwith the relevant national church staff totalk about a briefing paper regarding theTrident renewal and he will be back intouch after that.’

So that’s where we are now; please notethat all this happened through co-operat-ing with other others, asking advice ifthey know more than us, like Peter Burtof NIS, the Joint Public Issues Team,(Methodists, Baptists, Quakers, Church ofScotland, URC) and Sue of AnglicanPacifist Fellowship.

So very soon, February 15-19, ChurchHouse, Westminster. We will have mem-bership forms, this newsletter and theonline Interfaith Petition: endnuclearweapons.org. Our main focuswill be the coming 27 February demo withleaflets for our Faiths gathering at HindeStreet Methodist Church at 11am.Michael Pulham got rid of a lot of leafletslast time outside the great Smith St door, this time we’ll pass out leaflets for the27th, the week after. Come and help.

TTrident Ploughshares is organ-ising a month of direct action

at AWE Burghfield in June.

There’s a concern that if there is a votein Parliament to renew the Trident sys-tem people will get very disheartenedand think it is all over. A month of non-violent direct action should show thatthe public will continue to opposenuclear weapons and strengthen ourresistance and keep the pressure on.

It is time the public demanded the gov-ernment to comply with our obligationunder international law to accomplishthe total elimination of our nucleararsenal. By doing so we would send amessage to the world that spending forpeace and development and meetingpeople’s real needs is our priority, notspending on weapons of mass destruc-tion.

So Trident Ploughshares are asking youand your friends to spend at least oneday in the month of June at AWEBurghfield to disrupt the illegal andimmoral ‘business as usual’ by joiningour month of action. We need you toshow public opposition to TridentReplacement and to encourage nucleardisarmament.

Unlike AWE Aldermaston with multipleentrances and exits, AWE Burghfieldonly has two gates. The main entrancegate is in The Mearings, off ReadingRoad, Burghfield. The second gate(known as the Pingewood gate) is onBurnthouse Lane. Construction vehiclesmainly use this gate so it is sometimesreferred to as Construction Gate.

Trident Ploughshares already have oneday in the rota claimed for an academicsblockade on Thursday 16th June.Various other groups are consideringdates now.

It’s not expected for every group to onlyblockade but to consider any creativeand disruptive nonviolent actions insideand outside AWE Burghfield. Please letAngie Zelter know what day you wouldlike to take on. The aim is not to block-ade at weekends but to disrupt work asusual on the weekdays.

A new bill is to go before Parliament toallow for conscientious objection to mil-itary taxation. It would enable people toredirect the military portion of theirtaxes to non-military security, conflictresolution and prevention work. It isbased on a recognised humanright.

In the first world war theMilitary Service Act (1916)deemed most British males asconscripts. It made some roomfor conscientious objection.March 2nd is the centenary ofthat Act and, because conscrip-tion to the forces has ended, itseems there is no way peoplecan exercise conscientiousobjection, which is why mili-tary tax should be able to beconstructively diverted.

UN 70th Anniversary

OOn January 11, the UnitedNations General Assembly

(UNGA) held a special meeting inNew York to commemorate the70th anniversary of the very firstUNGA meeting in London.

UN Secretary general Ban Ki-moon saidthat the body has truly become the“Parliament for all people.... Each dele-gate who speaks, each vote that is cast, every gavel that opens a new meetingadds a little more hope to the world.”

See more at:http://tinyurl.com/znx2kfn

US Ambassador Samantha Powerreminded delegates that the first issue

addressed by the UNGA was on thethreat of nuclear weapons. “On January24, after weeks of debating, the GeneralAssembly adopted its very first resolu-tion... to seek a path toward the elimina-tion from national arsenals of atomicweapons and all other weapons adapt-able to mass destruction.”

UNFOLD ZERO has been promoting thecommemoration of this first UN resolu-tion as a good time to take action fornuclear abolition. See Time toImplement UN Resolution 1(1):http://tinyurl.com/hldjjpj

Nuclear Convoys project 2016

ICAN UK recently received funding totake forward the first year of what ishoped will be a longer campaign tofocus attention on the unacceptablerisks arising from the transporting ofnuclear warheads across Britain.

For many years Nukewatch,Aldermaston Women (AWPC), CND andothers have monitored and tracked thenuclear warhead convoys that travelabout six times a year between AWEBurghfield in Berkshire and Coulportnaval depot near Faslane, just north ofGlasgow. The most recent convoy wastracked by AWPC and Nukewatch leav-ing Burghfield on 9 January 2016, seeNukewatch video on youtube.

The purpose of this project, provisional-ly titled ‘Nukes of Hazard’, is to raisepublic awareness in ending Britishreliance on nuclear weapons, througheducational materials, outreach andactions that highlight the dangers of theUK’s possession and transporting ofnuclear weapons. By focussing initiallyon four locations along the convoy

route, the project will research localinformation, such as schools/colleges,hospitals, public amenities and work-places nearby, and link local meetingsand actions about the nuclear risks withbroader efforts to prevent the replace-ment of Trident.

The risks of possessing nuclear weaponseven if Trident is never fired at othercountries - is generally little understoodand under-reported.

The humanitarian consequencesapproach includes an understanding ofnuclear risks, eg. as highlighted by stud-ies published by ICAN, NuclearInformation Service, Scientists forGlobal Responsibility, Acronym, Article36, Scottish CND, and recent publica-tions such as Eric Schlosser’s 2014 bookCommand and Control and ChathamHouse report ‘Too Close for Comfort’, aswell as ongoing work by Nukewatch,Nuclear Free Local Authorities (NFLA),and others.

An open meetingThursday 25 February 2016Houses of Parliament

What is Ethics? Ethics is moral philoso-phy.

What is it for? It is the basis for the rules, written and unwritten, by which we con-trive to live together in peace and harmo-ny; without it we are miserable, possiblywe die.

Where does it come from? Not a prohibi-tion, but a reaching out in love forhumanity. God made us to love oneanother and all of life.

In a nuclear age we must love one anoth-er, or we certainly die, possibly alongwith all life on Earth.

Simple isn’t it? Unfortunately it is notthat simple. We have somehow managedto contrive a different moral law for warto that which applies for peace. And fornuclear weapons we contrive somethingdifferent again.

This is the position when we come todebate the future of our country’s nuclearweapons. We have one of the nine gov-ernments, out of 196 in the world, whichpersists in holding on to nuclearweapons. The proposal is to renew thiscapability, so that it lasts for another 30or 40 years. To do this without anyrecourse to moral judgement, or withoutany thought for applying the rules that

we normally live by, would be irresponsi-ble in the extreme.

In the run-up to the “Main Gate” debateon renewal of Trident, Christian CND isorganising a briefing for MPs on theethics of nuclear weapons. The basis forthis will be the Nuclear MoralityFlowchart. This is simply a decision tree,a logical network of moral and practicalquestions to encourage and enable aninformed personal decision on this topic.(see http://nuclearmorality.com/). It alsohas the potential, where our MPs areconcerned, to make their decision-pathtransparent to their constituents.

All the MPs will be invited to this meet-ing. You can ask your MP if he/she isgoing. Ask them anyway about their ethi-cal position on Trident. Ask them, at thevery least, to complete the Flowchart andlet you, their constituents, know theirdecision path, the basis for their decisionon this critical, moral, issue.

NB The date and time will be confirmedshortly — please ring the office to check.

FLY ON THE WALL

Her Majesty the Queen:“Congratulations on your elec-tion, Prime Minister, and wel-come! One always looks forwardto this part of the week. Over theyears, you know, One has hadthe benefit of discourse with severalPrime Ministers; a much valued experi-ence.”

The new PM: “Thank you, YourMajesty. It is a great privilege to be ableto speak with you.”

Queen: “Do be seated, Prime Minister. In spite of your success you must betired after all the recent activity?”

PM: “Thank you, Ma’am. It has beenboth exhilarating and testing, but Iintend to go on working hard for thegreater success of leading your kingdomforward.”

Queen: “Indeed. Now tell me, how didyou feel when you faced your first dutyas Prime Minister?”

PM: “My first duty, Ma’am?”

Queen: “When you were required towrite instructions regarding the use ofTrident - may God forbid that eventuali-ty!”

PM: “Although I expected the chal-lenge, Ma’am, it was a sombre momentand a grave responsibility. We all hopethat Trident works purely as a deterrent. However, should it fail in that role and

Great Britain suffer devastatingattack, whether or not actuallyto use it was the principal thingI had to decide.”

Queen: “And what did youdecide, Prime Minister?”

PM: “It was impressed on me, YourMajesty, that what I wrote was a top-most secret, meaning that no-oneshould have it except the submarinecommanders on receiving a special sig-nal. Only in that way are my instruc-tions to be accessed. I am sorry (and, Imust say, rather embarrassed) not to beable to enlighten you, Ma’am, about mydecision.”

Queen: “Please don’t be discomforted. You do have your duty to perform. However, One does find One’s ownposition somewhat troubling. I expectyou considered a range of options; fromusing it, to withdrawal. My difficulty inrespect of this awful weapon of massdestruction lies in my being a Christianand Head of the Church of England. Assuch, One subscribes to theCommandment, ‘Thou shall not kill’.This means that to go on slaughteringmany more innocent people should beout of the question. Two wrongs cannotmake a right. One reasons that ourfailed deterrent might best be dis-patched to a region of theCommonwealth not actively at war?”

PM: “That was an option I considered,Ma’am, but I’m afraid I cannot let you

January.qxd 29/01/2016 10:33 Page 14

know whether it was the one I decidedon.”

Queen: “I do hope it was. You know, the Cabinet Papers often provide Onewith clues about how minded myGovernment is, so you must expectsome probing questions on your visits!”

PM: “Is there anything else I can helpyou with, Ma’am?”

Queen: “There is indeed. You nowknow One’s concern about the nucleardeterrent being actually used as retalia-tion but, in addition, One must tell youhow troubling the policy of deterrenceitself is.”

PM: “Really, Ma’am?”

Queen: “Picture One in church, havingjust recited the Lord’s Prayer, and thenhappening to reflect on One’s nation’sdeclared intention to kill masses ofharmless people in order to make deter-rence credible! Nothing short of blas-phemy leaps to mind!”

PM: “Our hope has to lie in deterrence,Ma’am.”

Queen: “That sort of hope is dreadful. To rely on fear is certainly not the bestway for anyone to live. The more weallow nuclear weapons to govern ourlives, the more we accept them, themore degraded we shall become. Theycertainly do not protect us from that!

One must also say how unsettling it is

not to have a policy of ‘no first use’. Weare a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and committed tothe elimination of nuclear weapons.Surely our proclaiming we would notuse them first would be a step forward?”

PM: “I will discuss this with the appro-priate Minister, Ma’am, but I ratherthink we have to follow strategy obliga-tions in respect of our major ally.”

Queen: “Oh! Before we talk about othermatters of State, one last observation:One is so very disappointed at the slowprogress toward nuclear disarmament. Please assure that it is a priority ofyours to do your best to really speedthings up; to make sure diplomacy is aspositive, adventurous and innovative aspossible. Even leaving aside the event ofconflict, these weapons threaten every-body, Accidents and miscalculations areabsolutely inevitable and the risk is fartoo high for any delay. The history oftheir existence has already provided uswith several terrifyingly narrow escapes. Can One have your assurance, PrimeMinister?”

MMany of us were affected byreading John Hersey’s

“Hiroshima”. I found SusanSouthard’s “Nagasaki - Life afterNuclear War” even more emotive. As the publisher’s press releasehas it, “How to survive a nuclearbomb every day of your life”. Thiscity, the centre of Christianity inJapan at the time, has been over-shadowed by Hiroshima but itssufferings were equally appalling.

Susan Southard spent a decade inter-viewing and researching the lives of thehibakusha. This book follows the lives offive teenage victims, from 1945 to the

present day. Having survived the initialblast, they describe the effect on theirhealth, relationships and employment-the way they were so often ostracised bysociety who somehow thought it couldbe contaminated by their sufferings.

Read it if you dare; the city and its peo-ple will stay in your mind. Don’t let sup-porters of Trident persuade you thatthere can be a moral justification fornuclear war, EVER.

Stella was a keen historian and taught atWoking Girls Grammar School for someyears - she had started as a medical stu-dent at 18 yrs but dropped out when shemet the love of her life Vernon Scannellin her home town of Leeds. This wasrecounted at her funeral as she thoughtshe had married him but he was alreadymarried and they were arrested andtried for bigamy. They escaped prisonbut Stella was very traumatised and sonot surprisingly dropped out of medi-cine.

Later she married Tony Newsome whohad a prestigious job in the City.

Stella had quite disabling mental healthproblems and was a bad sleeper whohad the habit of phoning me at 3am fora long chat!!

Her beloved son developed a braintumour when he was around 10 yearsold. He was operated on successfully butleft with epilepsy. Sadly her son pre-deceased her and her husband diedsome years before she did.

Stella was a long-term member ofWoking CND and a generous supporter.

She attended the Coign church inWoking, and they were very supportiveof her in her last years but not ofWoking CND (seek ye first the kingdomof heaven - was their message to us).

I went to her funeral at WokingCrematorium but only a cousin wasthere and I didn’t have any contact afterthat.

She led a sad life and I was fond of herbut she slept all day and only wantedvisitors after midnight!
