Dear Family, The winter holiday season is traditionally a festive time of year. Families decorate their homes, and friends and family gather together for celebrations. Unfortunately, many of our favorite holiday traditions can also create fire and electrical safety hazards. Of the estimated 51,000 home electrical fires each year, nearly one-third happen during the winter months. Most of these can be avoided by following simple safety guidelines. Make safety a tradition in your family this holiday season. Use this information from the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) to help safeguard your home against electrical dangers and fire hazards, and to help make safety a part of your holiday celebrations. Home Holiday Safety RemindersLet your children show you what they’ve learned about holiday safety—and make your home safer at the same time! Get the whole family involved in helping to find and correct potential trouble spots around

the house. Use this sheet to help you get started.

Visit www.holidaysafety.org or www.electrical-safety.org for more electrical and fire safety resources to help keep your family safe all year long.

Fire SafetyFires caused by holiday decorations are some of the most damaging and deadly winter home fires. Prevent holiday fires with these simple tips.

• Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area, and inside each bedroom. Test them at least once a month.

• Keep anything that can burn—like stockings, gifts, decorations, and Christmas trees—at least three feet from space heaters and other heat sources.

• Choose a fresh, green Christmas tree and make sure to keep it watered.

• Never leave the kitchen when something is cooking.

• Keep candles and matches out of the reach of children.

• Extinguish all fires, even candles, when you leave the room or go to sleep.

Electrical SafetyElectrical lights and decorations add to the excitement of the holiday season, but they can also be shock and fire hazards if not used properly. Deck the halls safely with these easy reminders!

• Do not overload an outlet with more than one extension cord or too many electrical decorations and devices.

• Never pinch electrical cords in windows, doors, or under heavy furniture. Damaged cords are a shock and fire hazard.

• Keep cords out of high-traffic areas like walkways where people could trip over them.

• Do not connect more than three sets of traditional holiday lights together to make a longer string.

• Always turn off electrical lights and decorations when you leave the house or go to bed.

• Electrical decorations are not toys. Keep them out of the reach of children.
