TEN MYTHS AND FACTSCONCERNING OUTBOARD TECHNOLOGIES AND EMISSIONS LEGISLATION
Myth 1: The 2006 EPA and 2006 EU legislation make two-strokesillegal.Fact 1: The legislation enacted by the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) and the California Air Resource Board (CARB) as wellas EU Recreational Craft Directive REGULATE EMISSIONS ANDNOT TECHNOLOGIES. There is nothing either in the EPA, CARB orthe EU outboard emissions legislation that will ban the use of anyoutboard motor on any waterway. EPA, CARB and EU legislation doset limits for engines to be sold by the effective date of the legislation.
Myth 2: The EPA (USA) and EU (Europe) legislation make the sale anduse of two-stroke outboards illegal after 2006.Fact 2: Outboard manufacturers are required to comply with U.S. EPAlegislation through a corporate average. Any existing outboard modeland its related technology sold to the end-user prior to the effectivedate can be used beyond 2006 under both EPA and EU legislations.
No outboard brand or technology is outlawed by the EPA and EUlegislation.
Myth 3: Four-stroke outboards achieve the best fuel economy.Fact 3: Both four-stroke and direct injection technologies achieve highlevels of fuel economy. In fact, recent magazine tests have shown thatcertain direct injection outboards actually achieve higher levels of fueleconomy and efficiency than the same horsepower four-stroke model!
Myth 4: Four-stroke outboards are the cleanest available.Fact 4: Four-stroke and direct injection outboards are both significantlycleaner than traditional carbureted outboards. Four-stroke modelstend to have a slight advantage in the hydrocarbons (HC) category,while certain direct injection models tend to have an advantage in thecarbon monoxide (CO) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) categories.
Both technologies comply with U.S. EPA 2006, EU 2006 and CARB 2-STAR and 3-STAR ratings depending on the model.
Myth 5: The CARB STAR ratings apply worldwide.Fact 5: The CARB STAR rating applies only to outboards sold in theUS State of California and has nothing to do with the EPA or EU 2006/ 2005 Recreational Craft Directive.

Myth 6: Only the four-stroke technology can achieve the California AirResource Board (CARB) 3-STAR Ultra Low Emissions certification.Fact 6: There are CARB 3-STAR certified direct injection outboardsbeing sold today including the Evinrude® E-TECTM engines availablefrom 40-90hp.
Myth 7: Four-stroke outboards are the lowest maintenance outboards.Fact 7: Today’s four-stroke and direct injection outboards are both lowmaintenance products compared to what was available in the industryten or more years ago. Unlike today’s 4-stroke outboards, Evinrude®
outboards with direct injection and Evinrude E-TEC outboards have novalves to adjust, no crankcase oil that needs to be changed, no timingbelts or chains that require replacement. This equates to more time onthe water for the customer which helps to reduce maintenance costsover the engine’s life.
Myth 8: Four-stroke technology makes more torque than other outboardtechnologies.Fact 8: While most four-stroke outboards perform at acceptable levels,when comparing equal displacement engines, four-strokes developsignificantly LESS torque at the same RPM than competitivetechnologies. This is due to the inherent nature of the technology. Afour-stroke makes a power stroke every other revolution of thecrankshaft while two-stroke and direct injection technologies make apower stroke every revolution.
Myth 9: Four-stroke outboards do not consume engine oil. Fact 9: According to Southwest Research Institute, a government-approved emissions testing lab, a competitor’s 115hp four-strokeoutboard engine consumed 4.9 quarts of oil in 100 hours of testing. The oil capacity of the engine is only 4.8 quarts.
Myth 10: Two-stroke outboards expel oil directly into the environment.Fact 10: The oil in a direct injection outboard is combusted in thecylinder the same way the fuel is and is accounted for already in itsemission rating, while four-strokes need to dispose of the used oil in thecrankcase at the time of service.

EVINRUDE E-TEC OUTBOARDS OVERVIEWEvinrude E-TEC outboards are the first Bombardier designed andengineered outboards. Evinrude E-TEC outboards are designed to beeasy to own and operate and require no scheduled dealer maintenance for three years or 300 hours of normal recreational use.
Evinrude E-TEC outboards feature the cleanest outboard technologyavailable, are worldwide emissions compliant and their quieter operationand distinctive styling set them apart from the competition. There aremodels available in 40, 50 and 60 HP in a 2-cylinder configuration and 75 and 90 HP in a 3-cylinder configuration.
E-TEC is a total engine system that creates the total package inoutboard engines!
E-TEC DIRECT INJECTIONE-TEC direct injection uses a computer-based electronic enginemanagement system to monitor engine temperature, air temperature,atmospheric pressure, crank position and engine load so it cancoordinate delivery of precise fuel quantities into the combustionchamber when the exhaust port is closed. E-TEC direct injection injectshighly pressurized fuel into the combustion chamber, via a new E-TECinjector that has more flow and speed capability than previous directinjection designs. Injection pressure is 500-700psi depending on theneeds of the cylinder. Evinrude E-TEC injectors are simple and moredurable with 26% fewer parts than previous designs.
This method of introducing the fuel into the cylinder enhances the fuelburn to improve fuel efficiency and emissions output. Because thepulsing of the fuel is timed to occur after the piston has closed off theexhaust port, emissions are greatly reduced and fuel economy issignificantly enhanced. E-TEC direct injection also features StratifiedCombustion to provide exceptional low RPM fuel economy. The result isan engine with the high power-to weight ratio expected of a two-strokepower plant, plus the low emissions output, fuel economy and efficiencyexpected of a four-stroke engine.
E-TEC direct injection outboards have the lowest total reportableemissions levels of all outboard technologies and Evinrude E-TECoutboards are designed to comply with EPA 2006 and European Unionstandards as well as CARB ultra-low 3-Star emissions rating.
E-START SYSTEMThe high energy ignition delivers more spark at start-up. No choking, nopriming. Full magneto electronics make it possible to start and run theengine even if the boat’s battery should fail.

E-TEC AUTO LUBE Evinrude E-TEC outboards are programmed from the factory to run on TC-W3 oil. The Auto-Lube oil system can be programmed by anauthorized dealer to provide ultra-low oil consumption if the customeruses Evinrude XD100TM oil. Complete combustion prevents oil fromescaping into the environment.
NOISE REDUCTION TECHNOLOGYE-TEC engines have an idle air bypass circuit and an acoustically tunedair intake silencer which reduces intake noise. Evinrude E-TECoutboards also have full-length lower motor covers to reduce exhaustnoise to give the Evinrude E-TEC outboards a signature sound.
AUTO STORAGE MODEE-TEC engines are equipped with an auto storage mode, so theconsumer does not have to bring the boat and engine to the dealer foroff-season storage or winterization for the first three years of normalrecreational use.
S.A.F.E.Speed Adjusting Failsafe Electronics send the engine into a slowspeed/return home mode in the event of no oil or overheat situations.
ROBUST ENGINE COMPONENTSEvinrude E-TEC outboards use internal engine components from V4and V6 engines for increased durability such as: rods, bearings,cylinder sleeves, cylinder head, gearcase, mounts, intake system,reeds, fasteners and water pump. The pistons are cast from a newpatented alloy developed by NASA that is 2.5 times stronger thantraditional pistons at operating temperature. Evinrude E-TEC outboardsare easy to install and there is no break-in required thanks to the boron-nitrite lined cylinder bores. Robust gearcase and propellers that weredesigned for larger engines are standard on all Evinrude E-TECoutboards.
VARIABLE VOLTAGE COMPUTER CONTROLLED CHARGING SYSTEMThe alternator is a beltless, variable voltagecomputer controlled 75 amp, 1100 watt output witha voltage regulator with 25 amps dedicated tobattery charging.
COMPACT AND LIGHTWEIGHTAll Evinrude E-TEC outboards are designed to be compact andlightweight so they are suitable for many different boating applicationswhere weight is a concern.

For added security andcost reduction, an authorized Evinrude/Johnsondealer can program an E-TEC outboard to useEvinrude/Johnson XD100 Oil. Evinrude/JohnsonXD100 Oil is a premium synthetic formulation thatdelivers ultimate performance while providing theopportunity to reduce oil consumption. XD100provides unsurpassed protection against friction and wear, maximumdetergency for lowest combustion deposits, and is smokeless, ashlessand odorless. You can also use this oil in other DI or oil injectionoutboards.
AUTO STORAGEThe closed Evinrude E-TEC outboard and fuel system virtuallyeliminates fuel oxidation (varnish). With the auto storage mode there isno need to take the boat back to the dealership for winterization or off-season storage. EVINRUDE DIRECT INJECTION ENGINES OVERVIEWDirect injection, D.I., is the process of injecting a fuel-charge directlyinto the combustion chamber. Evinrude incorporates direct injection onits engines from 100-250 HP designed for fresh and saltwaterapplications. It uses a computer-based electronic engine managementsystem to coordinate delivery of precise fuel quantities into thecombustion chamber.
Evinrude direct injection injects highly pressurized fuel into thecombustion chamber at a cyclic rate of up to 100 times a second atpressures up to 450 psi. This method of introducing the fuel into thecylinder enhances the fuel burn to improve fuel efficiency. Because thepulsing of the fuel is timed to occur after the piston has closed off theexhaust port, emissions are greatly reduced and fuel economy issignificantly enhanced.
Additional fuel economy and performance are attained by a sensor thatconstantly monitors the exhaust pressure. The sensor providesfeedback to the engine management module, which then optimizes fueldelivery for the best performance and economy under any operatingcondition. Only Evinrude direct injection can boast about the efficiencyand reliable performance this feature provides. The result is a highperformance engine with the high power-to weight ratio expected of atwo-stroke power plant, plus the fuel economy and efficiency expectedof a four-stroke engine.

Give your Evinrude directinjection outboard the best–Evinrude/Johnson XD50 High DetergencyInjection Oil. This is a synthetic oil blend with CARBX additive. WithCARBX, carbon molecules are kept in suspension and pulled away fromthe combustion area. The result is fewer carbon deposits in the cylinder,delivering continued combustion efficiency. Evinrude/Johnson XD50 HighDetergency Injection Oil surpasses all industry standards for lubricity,rust protection, and detergency. You can use this oil in other D.I. or oilinjection outboards.

JOHNSON 4-STROKES DEFINEDJohnson 4-stroke outboards use the latest 4-stroke technology availablefor the marine market today with proven reliability. From overhead cams,offset driveshafts lower gear ratios and Sequential multi-port EFI,Johnson 4-stroke outboards are the most technologically advanced 4-stroke outboards in the world. Johnson 4-stroke engines are designed tobe lightweight and compact, and they typically have a better power-to-weight ratio compared to competitve four-stroke outboards. All thetechnological advancements in Johnson 4-stroke outboards offerconsumers better performance than competitive 4-stroke outboards andhassle free fun on the water.
SEQUENTIAL MULTI-PORT EFIEFI stands for Electronic Fuel Injection. EFI is another method ofcharging the cylinder with fuel. This should not be confused with DirectInjection. Direct Injection injects fuel directly into the combustionchamber. EFI, on the other hand, injects the fuel into the incoming airstream either at the throttle body or into the intake manifold. In morespecific EFI terms, the Johnson 40, 50, 60, 70, 90, 115, 140, 200 and225 HP four-stroke engines use Sequential Multi-Port EFI. There is oneinjector per cylinder and each injector is triggered to inject fuel insequence to the engine firing order. This method allows precise timingand injection of exact amounts of fuel when the engine needs it. Thereis no lag time in getting the fuel charge into the cylinder. The engineaccelerates faster and runs smoother.
Sequential Multi-Port EFI delivers turn-key starts in all conditions. Anelectronic control unit utilizes sensors to control engine warm-up andoverall operation by monitoring engine temperature, air temperature,atmospheric pressure, and engine load.
Because these Johnson outboards use EFI and four-stroke technology,you get the benefits of a complete engine management system withsuperior fuel economy, plus, smooth, quiet and clean smoke freeoperation that cannot be delivered by any competitive two-stroke EFIoutboard.

OFFSET DRIVESHAFT Johnson four-stroke outboards utilize an offset driveshaft in the 90-225hp engines. This design is successful in reducing the size of theoutboard to create a compact package and simultaneously moves thecenter of gravity forward to improve boat performance. This design alsoplaces the point where vibrations produced by the engine are at aminimum up and over the upper engine mount which greatly reducesvibration.
MULTI-STAGE INDUCTION/LONG TRACK INTAKE MANIFOLDThe Johnson 225 HP four-stroke engine uses multi-stage induction toimprove engine performance by changing the length of the intakemanifold pipes according to engine speed. The system uses two intakemanifold pipes per cylinder, one operating at low engine speed and one at high. As rpm pass a preset threshold, the direct intake pipe opens up,letting air enter directly into the combustion chamber, increasing theengine’s ability to breathe at high rpm. Johnson four-strokes 40 thru 90HP utilize a long track intake that provides added power and quietoperation.
DIRECT IGNITIONJohnson 40 and 50 HP four-strokes utilize direct ignition where the coilis built in to the spark plug cap to simplify design and reduce electricalnoise.
HYDRAULIC CAM CHAIN TENSIONERJohnson 25 thru 50 HP and 90 thru 225 HP four-strokes have a self-adjusting timing chain tensioner to reduce maintenance and deliverpositive power transfer.
LOWER UNIT GEAR RATIOSJohnson four-strokes 60 HP thru 225 HP use lower unit gear ratios thatallow you to turn larger props to increase the efficiency and transfermaximum power.

JOHNSON TWO-STROKES DEFINEDThe Johnson carbureted two-stroke engine completes its power cyclewith two strokes of the piston. There are no valves, springs, camshaftsor timing belts, so the engine is less complex and lighter. Instead ofvalves, there are a series of strategically positioned transferports–intake and exhaust, cut into the sides of the cylinder wall. Theseports are on opposite sides of the cylinder. The transfer ports areexposed, opened and closed, by the up and down movement of thepiston.
The advantage of Johnson two-stroke outboards is having a powerstroke for every revolution of the crankshaft. Power is built quicklyfor rapid acceleration in a package that is smaller and lighter.Johnson two stroke outboards have high power-to-weight ratios.In other words, they produce lots of horsepower in a small,lightweight engine package.
The process of purging exhaust gases from the cylinder and filling it witha fresh air/fuel charge is called scavenging. Johnson outboards use twoscavenging methods: cross scavenging and loop scavenging. Both cross scavenged and loop scavenged engines have their advantages.
CROSS SCAVENGINGCross scavenged engines have a deflector on the top of the piston. Thepiston’s deflector directs the incoming air/fuel up, toward the top of thecylinder and pushes the spent exhaust gases out of the exhaust port.

Loop scavenging offersimproved fuel economy andoptimum performance for atwo-stroke engine.
LOOP SCAVENGINGThe pistons on loop scavenged engines do not have deflectors. They relyon the shape of the intake ports and the combustion chamber to controlthe scavenging of the cylinder.
Ports are carefully positioned so that their combined streams flow upwardand then loop down toward the exhaust ports which effectively drive theexhaust gases from the cylinder.
