Description of basic system

The basic range of Uponor products includes all system components de-signed for different uses in a variety of applications, e.g. tapwater and radiator connection as well as radi-ant heating/cooling.

Description pipe

The Uponor multi-layer composite pipe (MLCP) is a pipe generation that unites the advantages of a plastic and metal pipe and therefore offers a high degree of flexibility and toughness, coupled with high pressure and temperature resistance.

The Uponor MLC pipe consists of a longitudinal safety welded alumini-um pipe, to which an inner and out-er layer of high temperature resist-ant polyethylene is applied (in accordance with DIN 16833). Owing to the specific form of the octene side chains in the molecular struc-ture of the material, a similar effect is achieved when polyethy lene is cross-linked.

All layers are permanently bounded together by means of an intermedi-ate adhesive layer. A special welding technique guarantees a maximum of safety. The thickness of the alumini-um selected for the Uponor MLC pipe is exactly adapted to the com-pressive strength requirements as well as the bending capability.

Smaller dimensions of MLC pipes are designed so that the aluminium layer neutralises the snap-back forces of the plastic material, enabling easier pipe installation with minimal effort.

Larger dimensions of MLC pipes and straight lengths of pipes have a greater aluminium layer thickness, making them stiffer and suitable for use as risers. The aluminium pipe is important for heat expansion. Ow-ing to the permanent bond between plastic and aluminium, thermal ex-pansion is determined by the expan-sion factor of the aluminium and roughly corresponds to that of a metal pipe, i.e. only 1/7th of the expansion of a pure plastic pipe. This offers advantages for pipe in-stallation, since the use of compen-sating points is largely unnecessary.

The smoothness of the inner plastic layer offers water no points of at-tack. Incrustration and corrosion are prevented in normal use. The trans-mission of flow noise or noise, e.g. emitted by circulating pumps, is re-duced to a minimum due to the spe-cific properties of the raw material.

The most important advantages of-fered by MLC pipes are:

Absolutely diffusion-tight, exceed the requirements of DIN 4726

Hygienicly harmless Minimal roughness k = 0.0004 mm

ensuring less pipe friction and lower pressure losses

Form stable, by compensation and reduction of snap-back forces

Highly flexible, making smaller dimensions (up to 32 x 3 mm) simple to bend by hand or with the corresponding tool

Heat expansion similar to that of metals, enabling larger pipe clip distances

Clean and easy to install, no welding, soldering, thread cut-ting or bonding

Corrosion-resistant, thanks to its inner and outer plastic layer

Excellent long-time rupture strength offers safety in daily use

Maximum temperature: 95 °C * Maximum continuous operating

pressure: 10 bar at 70 °C continu-ous operating temperature, with a tested longtime rupture strength of 50 years, safety factor 1.5 *

Low weight, easy handling Coils and straight lengths in

numerous sizes

The DGVW approval permits the use of Uponor MLC pipe for drinking water supply systems according to DIN 1988 TRWI. The approval in-cludes a positive assessment of the material according to the law gov-erning plastic articles for food use in drinking water supply, called KTW recommendation for short.

Description of basic systemPress fittings

The patented MLCP pressing system enables connections to be estab-lished within a matter of seconds without welding or soldering. The externally fixed press sleeve, which is permanently connected to the fitting, offers protection against mechanical influences on the

o-rings. The press sleeve has inspection windows to check the insertion depth of the pipe in the fitting before pressing. The plastic stop ring on the shaped aluminium press sleeve simplifies the task of attaching the pressing jaws. The stop rings are colour coded to ensure an optical press marking. After the pressing procedure the

rings fall off. The pressing jaws and the stop rings of the same dimen-sion have been marked with the same colour code. After installation, the connection is capable of ab-sorbing bending forces, due to the form stable press sleeve, without any leakage occurring. After pressing the pipe can be readjusted.

Compression fittings

The MLC range of compression fit-tings is designed to enable all con-ventional applications.

MLC compression fittings press the insert part (2) with fixed closed clamp ring (3) on to the MLC pipe by tightening the swivel nut (1). The compression fitting can be released again; whereas the insert part, made of PPSU, remains per-manently connected to the pipe. All ¾ inch compression adapters in-clude eurocone threaded parts.

Both press and compression fittings are permanently tight as confirmed by SKZ test reports and DVGW certificates.

Quality control

Constant quality controls before and during production:

Online inspections using special cameras, ball test, spiral test, measurement and tensile test.

In the works laboratory: Raw material testing, pipe tests using test piece (peeling test, thick-ness gauging), pressure and temperature tests and hot stor-age test.

Tests carried out by neutral Ger-man and international test insti-tutes.

According to the DVGW worksheet W 542, the minimum long-time rupture strength of multi-layer composite pipes in drinking water distribution systems must be veri-fied over a period of minimum 50 years. For this purpose, an inde-pendent test institute performs a number of tests and prepares the resulting internal pressure resistance diagrams.

These values are provided by the SKZ for Uponor MLCP. In addition to further tests, the values shown in the long-time internal pressure dia-grams form the basis for the issu-ance of the DVGW system test mark for MLCP with associated connec-tors. Together with the test institute and DVGW, Uponor is constantly working on pipe system tests in conformance with the associated worksheets of the DVGW.

The aim of these endeavours is to assure the quality of all currently approved MLCP products as well as extending the DVGW approval to new parts, fittings and pipe dimen-sions in the MLCP range of products.

Tap water: The maximum permanent operating temperature exists between 0°C and 70°C at a maximum permanent operating pressure of 10 bars*. The short-term malfunction temperature is 95°C of a maximum of 100 hours in the operating lifetime. Heating: The maximum permanent operating temperature is 80°C at a maximum permanent operating pressure of 10 bars*. The short-term malfunction temperature is 95°C of a maximum of 150 hours in the operating time per year.

* In some special products the permanent operating pressure is lower than 10 bars. Please have a look on the pipe marking.

In case of exceeding the maximum permanent operating temperatures e.g. in solar systems or district heating systems, the Uponor MLCP system can’t be connected directly to this kind of systems. It has to be ensured that in every situation the maximum limits of use of the Uponor MLCP system are not exceeded. In case of other use of the Uponor MLCP system Uponor has to be consulted.

The thermal expansion resulting from the mode of operation must be taken into account in the design of the pipe layout. The temperature difference Δt and pipe length L play a decisive role in thermal expansion.

For all installation variants, the ther-mal expansion of MLC pipes must be taken into account. For pipes in-tended for concealed installation or installation in screed, the thermal expansion is absorbed by insulation in the area of directional change.

The thermal expansion is calculated according to the following formula: Δl = α x L x Δt

Where the following are:Δl: Thermal expansion (mm)α: Thermal expansion coefficient

(0.025 mm/(m x K))L: Pipe length (m)Δt: Temperature difference (K)

For the planning and installation of distributing and rising mains with MLC pipes, in addition to the struc-tural requirements, also thermal ex-pansion aspects must be taken into account.

Rigid installation with MLC pipe is not possible. Thermal expansion of the pipes must always be absorbed or controlled.

Exposed MLC pipes fully exposed to thermal expansion, must be provid-ed with appropriate expansion com-pensation. For this purpose, a knowledge of the position of all fixed points is necessary. Compensa-tion always takes place between two fixed points (FP) and directional changes (bending leg BS).

Pressure test with water for tap water pipes

Note: The chapter “Pressure test of tap water installations” in the actual technical manual “MLCP system for tap water installation and radiator connection” is to be followed.

Construction project:

Stage:

Person carrying out the test:

Test pressure = max. permissible operating pressure + 5 bar ≤ 15 bar(related to the lowest point of the system)

All tanks, equipment and fi ttings, e.g. safety valve and expansion tanks, which are not suitable for the pressure test, must be removed from the system during the test period. The system is fi lled with fi ltered water and completely vented. A visual inspection of the pipe joints must be made during the test. After the test pressure has been reached a suitable time must elapse to allow for temperature equalisation between the ambient temperature and the temperature of the fi ll water. If necessary, the test pressure must be re-established after the waiting period.

Preliminary test

Begin: Test pressure:o‘clock,Date Time

Re-establish the test pressure two times within 30 minutes at intervals of 10 minutes – then wait 30 minutes and read the test pressure (max. pressure loss 0.6 bar).

The system specifi ed above was heated to the design temperatures on and no leakage was found There was also no leakage found after the cooling. With frost danger suitable measures are to be taken (e.g. use of antifreeze, heating of the building). If no freeze protection is required for the intended system use, the antifreeze is to be removed by emptying and fl ushing the system with at least 3 water changes.

Antifreeze was added to the water: Yes No
