The Trad phenomenon caused Jazz bands to be formed the length and breadth of the country and this release looks at some of those bands. Bands like Bristol's Avon Cities Jazz Band achieved some national fame and secured a recording contract with a major label where as others like Carlisle's Gateway Jazz Band had a purely local following. Some of the musicians went on to greater things. John Barnes of the Zenith 6 went on to become one of the UK's leading Jazz musicians whereas the trumpet player with Bill Croft's band from Newcastle Upon Tyne was John Walters who went on to be a BBC producer and work with John Peel. The Clyde Valley Stompers was Scotland's top selling Trad band from 1960-63. With a major recording deal with Pye and Lonnie Donegan as producer they also achieved national recognition with three chart singles. They made a commercial sound and played to the 'tartan' image. In the 70’s Jackie moved to the USA and signed with Capitol Records following which he appeared on a number of albums for other artists until 2001 when he recorded his first solo album since 1977 “The Ballad of Liverpool Slim”. Over recent years Jackie had continued to play live his “blues to soul” and he has recorded eleven new Lomax songs which mine deep those genres and showcase his wonderful voice and guitar playing on this album. Jackie died on 15th September 2013 in the Wirral, Merseyside and he recorded shortly before his death “Against All Odds” which is a fitting finale and a welcome addition to his musical legacy. Bonnie Dobson's name is synonymous with one original composition: Morning Dew, a song covered by the likes of the Grateful Dead, Lulu, Rod Stewart, Tim Rose, Robert Plant and countless others. It was written in 1961 when the Canadian born folk singer was appearing at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles. At that time, she made her home in Chicago and then New York, frequently appearing at Gerdes Folk City when Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs, Richie Havens, Simon and Garfunkel - to name but a few - were just beginning to put their singer-songwriting skills to the test. Both The New York Times and Time Magazine where she was cited as one of the 'Folk Girls' along with Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Carolyn Hester. In the autumn of 1969, having recorded two more albums for RCA (she’d already recorded for Prestige and Mercury), Bonnie moved to London. During that period she also met and became friends with the musicians who accompany her on this compilation: Annie Baker Graham (vocals), Gerry Hale (vocals, violin, mandolin), Richard Lee and David Moses (bass), and Friedemann Witecka (guitar). In 2006 Friedemann began to restore Bonnie's large archive of unreleased tapes. In the process Bonnie and Friedemann discovered recordings of performances much too exquisite to be left on the shelf. The idea of a retrospective collection of songs with Bonnie Dobson, the singer, and by Bonnie Dobson, the songwriter, began to take shape. In its final stage the album contains recording sessions from 1971, 1983 and 1996. Following his auspicious debut and two more singles which were issued on Polydor in the UK, Levine then brought James to London to record his debut album "My Claim To Fame". Rick Gianatos, the famous Chicago DJ got involved and the album was released in the U.S. on the A.V.I. label. "My Claim To Fame" was released as a 12" single and immediately raced up the U.S. Billboard Dance Charts before hitting No.1 for 7 weeks. Grateful Dead - Dicks Picks Vol. 10: Winterland Arena, December 29, 1977 £27.99 RLGM4002142PMI 848064002147 CD3 IMPORT EXCLUSIVE ROCK With the exception of the years 1973-1975, the Dead always could be found around town playing a New Year's Eve show, usually as part of a combo bill with other Bay Area bands, but starting in 1977, the year of this show, the group began to headline a series of concerts the last week of the year, a ritual they continued for 15 straight (or not-so-straight) years. And of all those concerts, this one, taking place at Winterland Arena the year before the Dead closed the venue for good on New Year's Eve, has long been regarded as the musical high water mark of the band's end-of-year festivities. Arguably the most consistent concert in the Dick's Picks series, the show opens with one of the strongest versions of "Jack Straw" and doesn't look back, with the return (after three years) of "China Cat Sunflower" a clear highlight. “Dick” was Dick Latvala, the official tape archivist for the Grateful Dead until 1999, whose inspiration and encyclopedic knowledge of the band’s vaults spawned the fabled Dick’s Picks series of live Dead concert recordings.
