PMEA All-State Jazz & Vocal Jazz Ensemble 2018 Audition Instructions Submission Deadline- MIDNIGHT, THURSDAY JANUARY 4, 2018 Directors who wish to have their students (grades 10-12 only) considered for selection should: 1. Complete the application form with payment ($10.00) online at www.submittable.com. The Director must be a current PMEA member. 2. All audition selections must be submitted online via Submittable. Each requirement must be recorded from start to finish without cuts and/or splices. The recording may be stopped between selections of each requirement. Students should announce each selection on the video before starting. The video must have a clock with second hand visible behind the applicant. No identifying clothing may be worn (i.e. no school t-shirts, no name identification, no PMEA, NAfME All Eastern or National shirts) 3. Have application uploaded by MIDNIGHT, THURSDAY, January 4, 2018.The “Window of Opportunity” to upload the recording begins MONDAY, November 6, 2017. 4. Expect notification on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2018 via the PMEA Website- www.pmea.net. 5. The director is asked to view the file and verify the recorded audition is consistent with the student’s level of performance. 6. Students may audition on multiple instruments or voice parts. However, a separate payment and Submittable application is required for each submission. All requirements for EACH instrument or voice part must be met and sent on a separate upload video. 7. (Instrumental Jazz Only)-The second ranked piano, drummer and bass applicants will be selected as the rhythm section for the 2018 All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble. * If selected for the 2018 PMEA Jazz or Vocal Jazz Ensemble, the student will no longer be eligible for any of the other All-State Ensembles. * Vocal Jazz students (including the rhythm section) are eligible to apply for NAfME Eastern Division or National Honors Ensemble. Directors who wish to have their students (grades 10-12 only) considered for selection should:

Do NOT play it with the accompaniment CD.

Part 1 – Winds continued

Trumpets, Trombones, and Bass Trombones – Play a two octave concert Bb scale in eighth notes at a minimum of quarter note tempo of 120. Play a two octave concert B scale in eighth notes at a minimum of quarter note tempo of 120. Play the entire etude “Friends” pages 32-33 in the book Jazz Conception by Jim Snidero (pub. Advance). Do NOT play it with the accompaniment CD.

Part 2 - Winds

The applicant must choose at least one of the following areas, but is encouraged to submit two or three of the sections. A high performance level is foremost, but displaying a broader scope of one’s abilities will give the judges a better representation of the total player. Scoring for this category will be an average of the section(s) submitted.

A. Improvisation – Improvise over The Moon is High, found on pages 16-17 in the book Effective Etudes for Jazz by Mike Carubia and Jeff Jarvis (pub. Kendor), playing along with track 27 from the accompaniment CD. B. Lead Playing – (this option not available for tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, or bass trombone) Etude is available online. www.pmea.net , Scroll to “Conferences and Events” and then “PMEA All- State Information”. C. Section Playing – Play the etude My Glowing Moment, found on pages 30-31 in the book Effective Etudes for Jazz by Mike Carubia and Jeff Jarvis (pub. Kendor), playing along with track 34 from the accompaniment CD.

Rhythm Section

Guitar, Piano, and Vibraphone

1. Play the entire etude My Glowing Moment, found on pages 30-31 (54-57 for Piano) (guitar and vibes play lead line only; piano lead line and comp) in the book Effective Etudes for Jazz by Mike Carubia and Jeff Jarvis (pub. Kendor), playing along with track 34 from the accompaniment CD.

2. Comp two choruses of “Bird Blues” page 34 found on page 34 in in Aebersold, Vol.2. playing along with track 12 on the accompaniment CD.

3. Improvise over The Moon is High, found on pages 16-17 (pages 26-29 for Piano) in the book Effective Etudes for Jazz by Mike Carubia and Jeff Jarvis (pub. Kendor), playing along with track 27 from the accompaniment CD.

Bass

1. Play the entire etude My Glowing Moment, found on pages 30-31 in the book Effective Etudes for Jazz by Mike Carubia and Jeff Jarvis (pub. Kendor), playing along with track 34 from the accompaniment CD.

2. “Walk” one 32 bar chorus, then improvise one 32 bar chorus over The Moon is High, found on pages 16-17 in the book Effective Etudes for Jazz by Jeff Jarvis, along with track 27 from the accompaniment CD.

Drums

1. Play along with the track Whodunnit?, found on pages 24-27 in the book Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band Play-Along Series (vol. 1, pub. Alfred). Use track 8 from the accompaniment CD.

2. Play along with the following track from John Riley’s book The Art of Bop Drumming”. Catch all written figures and provide appropriate comping throughout each example. Track 42 (The Art of Bop Drumming)-pg. 66- “What is this Thing Called?”: Play the piece as

is, with one chorus of solo drums added at the end of the coda (exactly 32 measures of 4/4 in AABA form in time. )

3. Provide an unedited recording of yourself performing the following styles: Salsa (Mambo): half note=110, 2:3 clave, play exactly 16 full measures, use idiomatic

comping/fills, play with sticks. Bossa Nova/Samba) quarter note=120, 4/4 time, play exactly 15 full measures of Bossa

Nova time, then play a one bar fill into 16 measures of double time Samba (half note=120). Use idiomatic comping/fills and play with sticks and/or brushes.

Audition Materials for the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble 2018

1. Sing two (2) different major scales in swing eighth notes using jazz syllables of your choice (ascending and descending; tempo: quarter note=100; one octave; include the ninth on top).

2. Sing Skylark, found on pages 23-24 of It Had to Be You: 24 Standards in Singer’s Keys, Volume 107, by Jamey Aebersold (published by Jamey Aebersold Jazz, Inc.). Sing unaccompanied using the lyrics in ballad tempo. Change the key to suit your range. Sing one (1) complete chorus.

3. Sing I Thought About You, found on page 18 of It Had to Be You: 24 Standards in Singer’s Keys, Volume 107, by Jamey Aebersold (published by Jamey Aebersold Jazz, Inc.). Sing one chorus unaccompanied using scat syllables in medium swing tempo. Change the key to suit your range.

4. Sing Summertime, found on pages 15-16, using the accompaniment provided (CD #1- track 11) with It Had to Be You: 24 Standards in Singer’s Keys, Volume 107, by Jamey Aebersold (published by Jamey Aebersold Jazz, Inc.). Sing the first chorus using melody and lyrics; improvise on the second and third choruses using scat syllables. Stylistically appropriate interpretations of the melody are acceptable.


Recommended
