National Volunteer WeekNational Volunteer Week kicked off on Monday 18th May. Generally speaking, we have a number of volunteers at Balaklava Primary School. Parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and community members help us in a variety of ways such as assisting with Breakfast Club, attending Camps and

Excursions, listening to reading etc. This year, the opportunities to volunteer have been limited due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Reconciliation Week National Reconciliation Week began yesterday. This year’s theme is – In this Together. It’s quite fitting as we have all pulled together more than ever, during a time of uncertainty. As we are unable to celebrate with BHS and BCCC this year, we’ll be undertaking activities to learn about reconciliation in each of the classrooms. Julie McDonald, our Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer, will be supporting teachers to deliver this learning. To kick off the week, Julie, Marcia and the Room 6 students watched the story Thukeri. See page 11 for photographs of their great Thukeri themed art.

Regardless of this, we acknowledge and thank all of the volunteers who support the students and staff at BPS and will formally recognize our Volunteers later in the year.

Education Support Personnel DayOn Saturday May 16th, we joined the world celebrating Education Support Personnel Day. This day was about acknowledging the range of people that support our students and staff. The Department for Education summed this up beautifully…. Whether you drive a school bus, help our teachers with classroom learning, work in the front office or canteen or keep our school clean and hygienic we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without you.

We thank all of the Support Personnel at BPS and want to ensure that you know that your hard work is valued and appreciated. It was very fitting that two of our students asked to acknowledge cleaners, Deb and Anne-Marie at the Week 3 SIM assembly. We organized it so that Deb and Anne-Marie could join the Assembly via Webex. We will formally celebrate the wonderful work our Support Service Officers undertake, during SSO Week later in the year.

On behalf of the Governing Council I have the privileged opportunity to try and articulate and put into words, the gratitude & appreciation we feel towards Dianna and the BPS staff - as they have navigated their way through recent restrictions, expectations & guidelines.

In what has been a fearful, stressful & unprecedented time in our history with the arrival of COVID - as parents we have relied on Dianna & BPS staff for direction, advice, open & transparent communication and instilling a sense of calm, resilience and normality for our children.

Then add in the expectation & the need for at home online learning and still having children attending classroom lessons.

As parents we have felt supported, informed & not judged in the difficult decision we made in whether to keep our children at home or at school. We feel this is one of the many qualities that Dianna encompasses as a Leader & Principal of our School.

We have valued & appreciated staff flexibility, professionalism, guidance, the inclusion of ALL their students & the willingness to perhaps put their own personal emotions/safety fears aside, to continue to teach and nurture our children.

Please know your efforts have not gone unnoticed & its difficult to put into words our true appreciation and gratitude.

We are looking forward to a busy Term 2 as things slowly return to some kind of normality & working together to achieve the best outcomes for all BPS Students.

- From Kirstyn Rundle - Chairperson On behalf of BPS Governing Council.

UniformThe cooler mornings and afternoons has meant that students have been scrambling to find their jumpers and long pants. It is important that students are dressed as per our Dress Code Policy (see Pg 20).

Through discussions between Staff, PCC and Governing Council, a decision has been reached regarding long sleeve tops / jumpers under school t-shirts. Students are only allowed to wear:• Black long sleeve tops under school

t-shirts or• Long sleeve maroon t-shirts.

Hoodies, non-school jumpers or any other colour long sleeve shirt will not be permitted to be worn under school t-shirts. If a student comes to school with a non approved item under their school t-shirt, they will be asked to remove it. We would appreciate your assistance in reinforcing this with your children.

Due to lots of people having a clean out, we currently have a reasonable range of long pants and jumpers in our second hand uniform shop. Please contact the school to check availability.

Thank you to everyone who has completed or are continuing to make agreed payments of fees etc to the school. This is much appreciated.

COVID meant we have tread lightly with this matter, however we are now following up with those who are yet to maintain their agreements or a few families who have initiated no form of payment including School Card application.

Any families who have been financially impacted by COVID are asked to please make contact with Diane and Dianna and arrange a meeting to work things out agreeable to both parties. If we do not hear from you, outstanding invoices will be treated as per DfE and BPS Governing Council guidelines. We would much prefer you make contact with us now.

- Thank you

How to volunteer for crossingIf you would like to be a crossing monitor you need to be a year 5 student at any school and if you would like to get the job as soon as possible you can go to the front office and ask if they can put you in a free open spot because you really want to get on the roster. If you are a crossing monitor you have to do the job in any kind of weather it might be pouring down with rain and you would still have to do it. Each shift is about 15 to 20 minutes.

The only things you need is the flag, the lollypop sign and the vest. When you get the equipment in the morning, go to the crossing with the other monitor and a teacher. There will be a monitor on either side and the teacher

will say up or down and you just put the signs up or down. Before you do all that you need to put your school crossing flag in the pole with the two holes in it and the person at the afternoon shift will bring the flag in.

Every now and then you have to fill in for someone and there will be some people who may not do the right thing and you will have to tell a teacher. Now you will be a great crossing monitor. - By Dean

As part of Volunteer Week the students in Rm 18 wrote procedures about volunteer jobs within our community.

How to become a crossing monitorTo be a crossing monitor first you will need to be year five or over so then you can go to the crossing training. You must be willing to spend your free time before and after school. Sometimes it won’t be good weather either it could be windy or even raining. Also you will not always get put with your friends to do crossing but don’t worry it only takes about 15 minutes. If you want to do crossing a note gets sent home with you. You will need your parents to sign it so you can do it.

When you do crossing you must put the lollypop sign upwards for children to cross the road. When you put it down stand in the middle and hold it sideways so little kids don’t run on the road. If a bus is coming try not to stop it because it is a heavy vehicle you should also not stop trucks, ambulances and police or fire trucks. You will wear a vest and a hat.

Sometimes you will also have to fill in if someone is not there for a day. Also in the afternoon and morning you will have to put up and take down the flags. Sometimes you might have a person that is on their phone and won’t stop, then you will need to tell a teacher after the session. When you walk with the sign make sure the flat side is facing down in case you fall.

Finishing Fridays Over the semester I have been holding ‘Finishing Fridays’ in the science room at lunch for music or technology work that wasn’t completed to a satisfactory standard. Students names were given to the classroom teachers at the start of the week with the proviso that if they finished before Friday, they didn’t need to come. This time is available for students who need to catch up or would like something clarified from the music or technology lessons.

Specialist lessons are the hardest to follow up for work as we’re trying to work with the diverse needs of each classroom and catch up with those who might have missed out on a lesson or two. I would like to reiterate that this time is still available for students who haven’t completed work from weeks 1-8 of last term or Term 2, Week 3 onwards.

Choir(s)Both choirs have been a blast - and the remaining few choir books are flying out the door with our new initiates, which is fantastic because as a book owner they are integrated into the group, with new and old choir kids on either side to share what they are reading.

It has been wonderful to hear the enjoyment that choir has brought to the students - I simply can’t wait for us to perform to hear the amazing sound we’re producing!

SeesawAs my role doubles for technology and music, I have been trying to create work that is Seesaw friendly - not just a hard-copy, allowing students who are at home, or who have free time in the classroom to catch up on the work they might have missed or not completed.

If students wish to access any music or technology work from home that was created on Seesaw, they need to have the Seesaw class app downloaded and a code that they received from either myself or their teacher. 55

Procedural Writing Boy oh boy have we been having fun with this. Several classes have been learning the importance of clear instructions. Students were asked to write clear instructions on how to draw a simple house, pretending that they were talking to an alien at long distance who had never seen one. They couldn’t use words like ‘wall, door, roof, window’ instead using shapes and organised instructions to prevent confusion. I pretended to be the alien and when students were ready, I would read their instructions, pretending I had heard them over the phone.

Here is some of their work in progress

Wifi Technology works amazingly until it doesn’t. One hiccup that has repeatedly delayed lessons is the sudden loss of wifi. This term I have begun teaching classes how to check and re-establish their wifi.

Dichotomous ChartsAll classes have been learning about the elements of binary - Year 6/7’s in particular have been learning about absolutes - yes or no, 1 or 0. Using dichotomous charts which reach a conclusion using yes or no, students have been reaching conclusions using only the equivalent of 1 and 0.

Jelly in rm 7

Mrs Williams/Mrs Wood’s Room 7 class are learning about the ‘j’ sound. The Jolly Phonics action for j is to wobble like jelly, so we decided to make some jelly to match. We had to read the recipe for making jelly and had to figure out how many cups of water we would need for four packets of red jelly and four packets of green jelly.

We all had a turn at mixing, as well as helping to count out how many plastic cups we would need for everyone in our class to get one. We loved making the jelly, but eating it was much more fun!

In BER 3 we drew self portraits and spoke about how we are all different and the different ways in which we see ourselves. Many of the students with glasses were reluctant to draw them but we spoke about how wearing glasses is part of who they are. The students enjoyed looking at each other’s portraits. You can find these portraits on our wall in BER 3

art in rm 6

The Year R-1 students in Rm 6 have been hard at work creating a variety of exciting and colourful art pieces to decorate their classroom walls.

We recently received a donation of 3 bikes from the recycling group within the Lions Club of Clare and District. Here is a picture of Pat Williams from the Lions Club with some of our senior students helping him to unload the bikes. Continuing on from the success of last year’s Bike Ed program and this year’s National Ride 2 School Day we are building up a supply of donated bikes so that we can have regular bike riding activities and our bus children will be able to use our own bikes.

Saturday May 16th was Support Personnel Day. Scarlett and Mia took the opportunity to thank the Cleaners, Deb and Ann-Marie at our SIM Assembly.

The library shelves have been a little full of late, so we have had a clean up so that all our new books will fit on the shelves. We have weeded the collection, taking out our double copies and some of our older resources.

On Monday next week the deleted books will be displayed in the Well and students are invited to take home any of the deleted books for their own collections.

We have also already donated a number of our books to a church group which supplies books to children in Africa.

Pastoral CareNancy’s NewsGidday Everyone!Wow, Week 5 is about done and I continue to spend much of my time visiting classrooms and meeting students (making every attempt to remember names!)

I am becoming more settled into the PCW role and getting to know the routines better each week. Breakfast Club brings a steady flow of students and it’s great to chat with students afterwards during clean-up.

An aspect of being a PCW involves providing a pastoral presence to the whole school community. I am available to support and nurture student and staff wellbeing, providing social, emotional or spiritual support. This can look like many things – helping at Breakfast Club, informal chats from the staffroom to the school yard, basketball on the courts, card games in the library, classroom support and engagement, personal support, or group activities.

Many things happen informally while other things might be planned as needs arise.Every day is different and I am grateful for the opportunity to support this school community.

I am available on Tuesday and Fridays between 8.30am – 3.30pm and you can contact me through the front office staff.

Have a great week! - Mrs G
