BUTT 9 by Norm Smith

You will have noticed that Butt 9 has changed from circular to square. This is to accommodate the new Danage butt which we are testing as a possible alternative to the current ones.

The reasons for changing are simple: • thin arrows shot from higher powered bows are penetrating the current butts (piles and shafts being

damaged if they hit the concrete behind the butt) • when centres of the current butts start to break down, a lot of plastic rubbish ends up on the ground (the

old Stramit straw used to break down, plastic doesn’t) • arrows are easier to pull out than with the current butts. The butt is made of waterproof foam segments and there are practical reasons to impose the following limitations on how it is used: • Only paper faces can be used (not mounted on cardboard); different makes/types of faces are being

evaluated by Dean Pettman. • No arrow lubricant is to be used (no Armorall, soap or Scorpion product). • Arrow pulling must be done using the push/pull method (pushing the face around the point of entry

with one had while pulling the arrow with the other - an arrow puller may help). Note that this method applies to all butts - it protects the butt and helps the face to last longer; it also reduces the chance of bending the arrow.

• The face can be moved marginally off centre (to spread wear on the centre section of the butt). There is an additional power-stop bag which has to be hung behind the centre section of the butt - this stops the arrows when the centre starts to become softer. Unfortunately, it is rather heavy and has to be carried to and from the butt. We are about to investigate other options which are lighter. While the butt is under test, it will be available during programmed shoots for anyone to shoot at. This is a prototype butt for evaluation purposes - constructive comment/criticism is welcomed. And while it is being evaluated, we need to keep a record of usage (there is a record sheet in the back of the frame).

POLICE CLEARANCE

Any member coaching at sessions where children are present will require police checks. ARCHERY SA (via Sue Martin) has a VOAN number for the application. There will be no cost to individual archers. More to follow.

Welcome to the Club

Thought for the day... The Pope, being Argentinean and a supporter of the return of the Falklands has sacked two English cooks named Tina and Marge from the Vatican kitchens. He was asked by the cooks “if he would like the full English breakfast” and he replied

“Don’t fry for me Marge and Tina”.

My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked “What’s on the TV?”. I replied “Dust”. That's when the fight started...
