QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY - PUBLIC HOLIDAY A reminder that Monday June 12 is a public holiday. There will be no school on

this day.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY - WORKING TOGETHER Schools are quite dynamic places with students interacting in many different set-

tings and children need to work, play, communicate and problem-solve together.

From time to time relationships could be strained and your child may come home

concerned about how they are being treated by a peer. Importantly with the right

support the relationships can be repaired even if it does take a few days, maybe

even a couple of weeks.

In the vast majority of situations the staff will be aware of changes to friendships

and will already be working with the students to resolve the issue but sometimes

the staff may be unaware of what has transpired. If you are concerned about an

issue which involves your child please speak to your child’s classroom teacher

first. In most cases they will be able to clarify the situation including the context

around the problem. Sometimes by speaking to the class teacher you will high-

light a concern they can follow up. At times the issue may require my interven-

tion or support through Kerryn our wellbeing officer. However under no circum-

stances should you as the parent approach another child about an ‘issue’ that has

occurred. This will inevitably cause greater problems and make solving the origi-

nal ‘issue’ more difficult. I appreciate your support and willingness to work to-

gether in these situations.

STUDENT REPORTS AND CONFERENCE Student Reports will be sent home on Monday 26th June. A formal opportunity for

parents to discuss the progress of their child/children will occur on Wednesday

28th June. Allocation of 3-way conference times were sent home yesterday

(Wednesday June 7th). If the time is unsuitable or for some reason you cannot

attend the 3-way conference on Wednesday 28th please speak to your child’s class-

room teacher or Nicole in the office about a more suitable time.

PREP ENROLMENTS 2018 Thank you to those parents who have let us know their child will be starting Prep next year. We would en-

courage families to contact the school if they have a child starting school next year. As we move into the

month of June we start to really focus on staffing, grade structures and the allocation of resources for next

year. Having a reasonable idea of our Prep numbers at this stage of the year helps immensely. Please pass

this message onto any parents outside of our school community who are intending to enrol their children

here next year.

Enrolment Packs can be collected from the school office. The pack includes information pertinent to CGPS

including the Head Start Transition Program and includes the official school enrolment form. The enrolment

form and a copy of the child’s birth certificate and immunisation record should be returned to school by Fri-

day June 30th, 2017.

This date is set by the Department of Education. If your child has additional needs including a medical diag-

nosis, language difficulties, is involved with any Early Intervention services, or if you just have a worry or

concern about your child, please make an appointment to see me as soon as possible.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY VEGETABLE GARDEN It is wonderful to be able to acknowledge the completion of our school vegetable garden. Shortly families will

have an opportunity to start growing their own vegetables in one of the plots. I would like to thank Bun-

nings for donating a number of fruit and citrus plants for our school garden it has really finished off the de-

velopment of the area. Thank you to our student sustainability team and helpers for assisting with the

planting of the trees. I would finally like to thank Damian Pearce (Urban Garden Designs) and his team for

their professional approach in planning and construction of both the vegetable garden and amphitheatre

(outdoor learning) area.

ECHOES OF PINK FLOYD - OUR BUDDING STARS It was terrific to hear our students performed so admirably at the last Saturday

night’s well-received Echoes of Pink Floyd. By all accounts the students repre-

sented the school exceptionally well and should be proud of their own perfor-

mance in front of a very appreciative audience. If you haven’t read Monday’s Ad-

vertiser article about our fantastic students I suggest you have a look online or

get hold of the paper. Thanks again to Miss Ennor for organising and coaching

the students leading up to the event and a big thank you to the parents who sup-

ported the children on the night.

Jump Rope for Heart Our school is participating in Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart. This program helps our students get more physically active and im-proves their attitude towards healthy lifestyle as well as raising mon-ey for the Heart Foundation. We will be practicing our skipping over the next couple of weeks and will have a fun Jump Off Day on Fri-day, June 23rd.

Come and join us in raising money for the Heart Foundation’s re-search and health program work. You can help us fundraise by using the sponsorship forms that were sent home this week, or you can do it online at:

https://jumprope.everydayhero.do/jumprope2017/California_Gully_Primary_School_CALIFORNIA_GULLY_VIC_124460

If you have any issues, please see Linda Windridge.

Thank you for your support!

Hi Kids! How are your skipping tricks going? Can you do double-unders and criss-cross yet? It’s not long until your Jump Off day, so keep practising. Have you got any sponsors yet? Why not get Mum and Dad to help you use the computer to get online spon-sors. It’s easy and it’s fun!! Log on to: jumprope.org.au and follow the directions!

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 24. ACTIVITY IS A MOOD LIFTER It’s a fact that physical activity is a mood lifter. It seems that when you’re on the move. Certain chem-icals in the brain are released to make you feel good. Also, physical activity reduces stress and tension in the body, making you more relaxed. This is another very good reason for encouraging kids to be active. If they’re feeling a bit anxious, some physical activity will help them to feel calmer and give them a lift at the same time. Even younger children who are feeling grumpy will become more settled if you take them for a walk or a run in the park.

What you can do NOW Go bicycling along a bike track with your kids. On a wet day, pull on a wet-weather gear and set off for a long

walk. Ask your child to walk the dog or offer to walk a neighbour’s

dog. Play a game of table tennis.

Top Tip

You don’t have to go outside to be physically active. Get your kids to join you as to bed to touch your toes and then stretch to the sky.

WATER & HYDRATION

Even with the onset of cooler weather, it is still just as important to maintain

adequate hydration throughout the day. Water is not only lost on hot days through

sweating, but it is also lost through urine, perspiration and breathing during colder

months.

The best thirst quencher of all is plain water - it prevents dehydration,

does not cause dental caries, has no energy or kilojoules, contains no

caffeine and costs nothing. If choosing bottled water, ensure that it

does not contain additives or flavourings.

Many drinks, including soft drinks, cordials, wine, beer, tea, coffee and fruit juices,

may be high in sugar, alcohol or caffeine. Drinks high in sugar promote dental

caries, and children may fill up on sugary drinks while missing out on nourishing

foods. Caffeine is inappropriate for children and may interfere with sleep patterns

or increase the amount of water lost by the body, causing further dehydration.

Alcohol is not recommended for children.

Keep a bottle of water nearby, or a chilled bottle in the fridge, to encourage water

consumption. Adding a squeeze of natural lemon, orange or lime

juice can also make it more appetising. Also try freezing ice block

containers full of 100% fruit juice to flavour water.

Good Idea!

The beach is still interesting on a grey, overcast day. Head there for a walk or to practise somersaults, headstands and cartwheels on the sand.

It was good to see children walking to school today, especially with the poor weather. Re-

member you can walk part way to school if it is too far to walk all the way.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recy-cling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
