in charge of Body n o . 2.

also had a green w a x ^ f a c k e t in her p o s s e s s i o n a long witty f l n g s and a

As time went by the crowds b egan to get larger o b n q reqat i nq outside
|j the public houses and at a p p r o x i m a t e l y 12 m i d d a y there was a crowd of
1-----------------a p p r o x i m a t e l y 300 fans o utside the Royal Hotel - The public house
itself was full to o v e r f l o w i n g a nd all the ^crowds t hou gh boisterous,,
were well behaved. T hes e crowds were d ri n k i n g beer fay the crateful and
f s a ^ d rinki ng it on the pavement. The cray/d o u ts ide the Royal Hotel

drunk, so the a t m o s p h e r e gat more aggi/lated. This c u lm in at i ng in a

the road. S h o r t l y a f te r a m em be r o f/ staff from the Royal Hotel
a p p r o a c h e d us to say that there wa4 trouble in the premises.. P ol ic e

and the crowd m o v e d on,. T h ey wei/e all very drunk but due to
numbers, it was i m p os si bl e to do a n y t h i n g a b o u t them g et ti ng to the
ground. As the rest of the fajis f iled past us on P e n i s t o n e R o a d
h eadin g towards the ground, it was obvious from their d e m e a n o u r a nd
b e h a v i o u r that m any of therr# had been d r i n k i n g and were drunk. I have
^ not w o r k e d at the P e n i s t o t p R o a d end of the g r o u n d b efore a nd can not
comment as to w h et h e r it A s usual that so m a n y -fans s h o u l d be dri nk i ng\ /or drunk before the m tj fi..
<^0 At 3 pm we began to make our way back to the g r o u n d in order to
commence Phase (2) duties, those being on s t a n d b y o u tside the g r o u n d .
However, w hi ls t w al k i n g back towa rd s the g ro un d as a serial, it became
fj- ^ a p p a r e n t via the radio that there we re probl erns in the g round at the
^ * L e p p i n g s Lane end. We b eg an to make all haste back to the g ro u n d on
_vj the way being picked up by a P ol ic e iransit Van a nd d ro p p e d at the
ground. We e n t e r e d the g r o u n d and were p laced on s t a n d b y at the Kop

A f t e r some five m i n u t e s on s t a n d b y at this location, d ur in g w h i c h time
it was b ec om ing o b v i o u s us that there was a m aj or disaster-
o c c u r r i n g at the L e p pj/n g s L ane end, we were all then t a k e n onto the
f ield a nd p laced ij/ a line in a public order c a p a c it y a l o n g the front
of the No r t h \Stajjm. U p o n e n te r i n g the f ield I saw h u n d r e d s of
L i v e r p o ol f a n V ^ o n the f ie ld a n d m an y fans laying on the f i e ld
o b v i o u s l y injured. We w e re kept in the line in front of the n orth
s ta nd for some ten m in utes. It was a p p a r e n t d ur in g this time that the
L i v e r p o o l fans in the N o r t h S t a n d w ere very a n g r y and were v en ti n gi
their a nger on o u r s e l v e s on the pitch. The a b us e and phys ic al s ig n a l s
from persons in the s t a nd was on a very large scale a n d I have no
doubt that had we not been in the l o c a t i o n th^t a nger w o u l d have been
v e n t e d on the N o t t i n g h a m F o r e s t fans. S e v e j?a 1 J a n s were le a vi ng the
N o r t h S t a n d a nd r ip pi ng up a d v e r t i s i n g h o a r d i n g s a nd t ak i ng t h em to
the L e p p i n g s Lane end a n d c arry in g ^ n U j r e d p er sons away. A f te r some
ten m i n u t e s at the front of the N o r t h StamJ'V m y s e l f a nd P o li c e
C o n s t a b l e 682 Lowe w ere i n s t r u c t e d a l o m j w i t h two other o f f i c e r s to
s ta n d b y at gate 6 (six) of the N o r t h / p e n in an effort to prev en t even
' \ T / ~more persons from e n t e ri ng onto the f ie l d t han there was at present.
The N o r t h a nd N o r t h West P e n of the L e p p i n g s L ane end at this time
were f a ir ly empty. Most of the people being on the field. The fans who
were on the f ield were m o s t l y w a l k i n g a r o u n d in a daze but it became
very a p p a r e n t that the vast m a j o r i t y of them had been d ri n ki ng
heavily. T he y w er e v enting there a ng er upon the P ol i c e a nd w h il st
s to od at this gate to the N o r t h Pen, we were a p p r o a c h e d by a m e m b e r of
the press who w a s /^ijlng k i c k e d and spit at by d r u n k e n L i v e r p o o l f a n s.
He a p p r o a c h e d us for prot ection. He had been t akin g p h o t o g r a p hs of the

His camera e q u i p m e n t w h i c h he had w i t h h im was being k i c k e d a n d spat
at by the fans. In an e ffort to protect him we t r i e d to k eep the
L i v e r p o o l fans a w a y but t hey were so intent to get at him. The a b u se
coming from persons still left in the N o r t h a nd N o r t h W e s t P e n s as
well as from on the field. W hi ls t t here coins b e ga n to rain d o w n on us
from the t e r r ac e s at the press m an a n d o ur s e l v e s . The only w a y we
could protect him was to get him out a nd for his own safety, he took
off his press j ac ke t a n d put all his e q u i p m e n t away. T h re e of us who
were on the gate then f o r m e d a circle or s or ts a r o u n d him and
a t t e m p t e d to run t h r o u g h the L i v e r p o o l fans on the f i e ld and to
safety. As we made our w a y t h r o u g h the crowd the photog raphe r s c amera
e qu i p m e n t a n d bags w ere k i c k e d all over the pitch, we were spat on by
fans who were o b v i o u s l y drunk a nd angry. We e v e n t u a l l y m a n a g e d to get
him to s a fe ty at the N o t t i n g h a m F or e st end. I then went back to the

on the f iel d and the d e c i s i o n was t a ke n to a b a n d o n the game, I was
