Recovering the Installation Following a PowerLoss
Windows mobile devices have backup batteries topreserve the contents of the machines main memoryif the main battery runs flat. However, on somedevices it is common to experience the loss ofbackup power as well, which means that the entirecontents of the main memory is lost. Storage cardsto not require battery power to preserve theircontents and you can install PocketGIS onto astorage card, and also keep your map data on thecard, to prevent their loss when power is exhausted.Once the batteries have been recharged or replacedthe software and data on the storage card will beavailable for use (although any software or data onthe main memory will be lost). Although thesoftware is preserved in this circumstance, important installation information, which mustreside in the main memory, is lost which makes thefunctionality provided by PocketGIS components(e.g. GPS Receiver) unavailable. You will also looseyour options settings and the software will return toit’s default configuration.
PocketGIS provides two mechanisms which allow youto restore from total power loss, if all the PocketGIS
1-11
Installation & Setup
software is installed on a storage card, withouthaving to use a third party backup tool. PocketGIScan now detect and repair the installationinformation in main memory following a power loss.A method to backup your options settings to astorage card is also provided.
Installing PocketGIS for Power Loss Recovery
Firstly you need to insert a memory card (or cards)which has sufficient capacity to hold the PocketGISsoftware (circa 2 to 5 Mb) and all your map data. Some devices have memory expansion moduleswhich function as storage cards and do not loosetheir contents following a power loss. Storage cardsappear on Windows CE devices as “Storage Card”,“Storage Card 2”, etc. Some devices use the name“Compact Flash”, “Drive”, or “Disk” instead.
Install all the PocketGIS software onto the storagecard. When running the PocketGIS installer theActiveSync Application Manager (also known as“Add / Remove Programs”) will ask you if you wantto install the software in the “default applicationdirectory”. Press the N oN oN oN oN o button and select theStorage Card in the dialog that follows. When thesoftware has been transferred to the device awindow will appear asking you to select the locationfor the software (this will happen for eachcomponent). Press O KO KO KO KO K to choose the default folderfor each component which will be in the form“Pocket Systems <component name>” in the “StorageCard” folder. [Note: the only other configurationthat is supported by the power loss recoverymechanism is installing all components into thesame folder, e.g. “\Storage Card\PocketGIS” but it is
1-12
PocketGIS User Manual
safer to just accept the default]. If the software isinstalled onto a card, removing the card whilstPocketGIS is running will cause the application, andpossibly the operating system, to crash.
When importing data into PocketGIS always chooseto transfer it onto a storage card.
Once you are happy with your options settings, orafter significant changes, select Options Options Options Options Options from thePocketGIS PocketGIS PocketGIS PocketGIS PocketGIS menu and go to the Backup Page. Selectthe storage card you wish to backup your optionssettings to and press BackupBackupBackupBackupBackup. Your options will besaved to the card. Note that only options will bebacked up, data and software will not be backed up.If you change your settings make another backupwhich will overwrite any previous backup on thatcard.
Recovering the Installation Following a Power Loss
Following a complete power loss the PocketGIS itemon the programs menu will no longer be there as theinstallation information will have been lost with themain memory contents. Use the “Windows Explorer”(if on a Handheld PC) or other file explorerapplication and navigate to the location of thePocketGIS application. This will be called“PocketGIS.exe” (it may appear as just “PocketGIS”with an application icon) and will be located in“\Storage Card\Pocket Systems PocketGIS” orwherever you chose to install the software. Doubletap the application icon to run PocketGIS. PocketGISwill detect that the main memory contents havebeen lost and the installation information, includingprogram menu entries, will be restored. [Note:
1-13
Installation & Setup
PocketGIS Connection will not be able tocommunicate with PocketGIS until this restorationhas been performed]. Following the installationrestoration, your options settings will then be copiedback into the main memory. Note, if you did notmake a backup of your options before the power waslost they cannot be restored.
PocketGIS will now be fully operational.

Chapter 3
Working with Map Views
This chapter explains the basic principles of how youwork with map data in PocketGIS.
Map Views
You view and access map data in PocketGIS via aMap ViewMap ViewMap ViewMap ViewMap View or ViewViewViewViewView. The terms Map View and Vieware used interchangeably throughout this manual.
The Map View determines which map data isdisplayed and how and when it appears on thescreen. The View is literally your view onto the mapdata.
When you open PocketGIS for the first time therewill be no Views available - a View will be created foryou the first time you download some map data.Downloading map data is explained in the PocketGISConnection User Manual.
3-2
PocketGIS User Manual
The map data that is associated with the View will bedisplayed in the Map Display AreaMap Display AreaMap Display AreaMap Display AreaMap Display Area. You cancontrol the map display using the Pan / ZoomPan / ZoomPan / ZoomPan / ZoomPan / ZoomControlsControlsControlsControlsControls in the main toolbar at the top of thescreen - these controls are also available from theView menu along with other view controls. Thesecontrols are explained later in this chapter.
By default PocketGIS works in Multiple View Mode. However, you can configure PocketGIS to work withsingle Views which simplifies the View menu - this iscovered in Chapter 8 - Multiple View Mode.
In addition to the Pan / Zoom Controls, View Menu, and Map View Controls, there are many other toolswhich operate on map data. These controls aredescribed in the Map Tools and Navigation &Display Tools chapters.
Once some map data has been loaded, a View will becreated and an initial overview of the map data willbe displayed.
The current scale of the map display appears in thetop right hand corner of the PocketGIS screen.
3-3
Working with Map Views
Pan / Zoom Controls
The Pan / Zoom Controls in the main toolbar can beused to navigate around the Map Display. Thesecommands are also available from the ViewViewViewViewView menu.
Keyboard shortcuts are provided as indicated in themenu and button tooltips.
The button on the left of this control group is theZoom In ButtonZoom In ButtonZoom In ButtonZoom In ButtonZoom In Button.
This button will increase the resolution of the mapdisplay - a smaller area of the map view will bedisplayed at a larger scale. The centre of the displaywill be the same as the previously displayed area.
The button on the right is the Zoom Out ButtonZoom Out ButtonZoom Out ButtonZoom Out ButtonZoom Out Button.
3-4
PocketGIS User Manual
This button will decrease the resolution of the mapdisplay - a larger area of the map view will bedisplayed at a smaller scale. The centre of thedisplay will be the same as the previously displayedarea.
The four buttons in the centre of this control groupwill pan the display in the direction of the arrow. The display resolution, or scale, will not change butthe display will be centred on a different location.
Depending on the current display position in themap display area, these buttons will be either active- meaning you can pan or zoom in that direction, orbe inactive (greyed out) - meaning that you cannotpan or zoom in that direction. You cannot zoom outif you are at the maximum extent of the map viewarea. You cannot zoom in if you are at the minimumextent of the map view area. Sometimes you will seethat all the Pan / Zoom control buttons are greyedout and therefore disabled. This happens whenthere are no Map Views available, or the map dataassociated with the View is not available (e.g. if itwas on a storage card which you have removed).
You can select ‘Overview’ from the ‘View’ menu - thiswill zoom the map display out to the full extent ofthe data in the map view.
Composition of Map Views
A Map View is comprised of a number of LayersLayersLayersLayersLayers ofMapMapMapMapMap data.
3-5
Working with Map Views
Geographical map data is stored in a MapMapMapMapMap. EachMap that is loaded into PocketGIS consists of one ormore Layers of geographical data. For example aMap of an urban area may have three Layers - onecontaining roads, another containing buildings, anda third containing railways. Vector Map Layerscontain FeaturesFeaturesFeaturesFeaturesFeatures. A Feature is a graphical elementsuch as a line, point, text, area, etc. Map Views canalso contain Raster Map Layers which display ascanned image of a map.
A Map View can contain any number of Layersdrawn from any number of Maps. i.e. the View cancontain Layers from more than one Map. Also, theView does not need to contain all the Layers fromeach Map.
Each Layer that is included in a View has two otheritems associated with it: a LegendLegendLegendLegendLegend and a DisplayDisplayDisplayDisplayDisplaySchemeSchemeSchemeSchemeScheme.
A Legend defines how the map data is displayed, i.e.it defines line styles and symbols.
A Display Scheme defines at which scale individualmap features are displayed. As you zoom out of amap display features may no longer be displayed inorder to reduce the density of the map display andaid clarity. For example, as you zoom out buildingsmay not be displayed past a certain scale, but roadswould still be displayed.
Legends and Display Schemes are setup usingPocketGIS Connection. The creation andmodification of Legends and Display Schemes isdiscussed in the PocketGIS Connection User Manual.

The View Menu
The View Menu provides various items which controlthe Map Display Area.
The Zoom / Pan item provides menu based access tothe pan and zoom commands described earlier inthis chapter. The Modify item is described in‘Modifying a View’ later in this chapter. Additionalcommands that can appear on this menu aredescribed in Chapter 8 - Multiple View Mode.
The second part of the View menu contains a list ofthe layers in the current view.
You can use the View menu to turn the display oflayers on and off. If there is a to the left of a Layername, then that Layer is currently displayed. If youtap on the Layer’s name then the map display willredraw without data from that Map Layer. If there isa space on the left of a Layer then that layer is notcurrently displayed. If you tap on the Layer’s namethen the map display will redraw with data from thatLayer.
If a Layer name is greyed out then the Layer cannotbe displayed at the moment. This could be becausenone of the data from that Layer will display at thecurrent scale. For example, if the Layers’ Display
3-7
Working with Map Views
Scheme was set so none of it’s data was displayedabove a scale of 1:50,000, and you zoomed out to1:100,000 - the Layer’s name would be greyed out. This is nothing to worry about - it’s for yourinformation. If the Map Display Area goes blankafter a Zoom Out operation - check the View Menu tosee if the data has gone out of range.
The Layer name will also be greyed out if the Layer’sMap, Legend, or Display Scheme is missing (if youhaven’t deleted the map then it was almost certainlyon a card you have removed).
Modifying a View
You modify a View via the Modify View dialog. Thisis accessed by selecting the Modify item of the ViewMenu.
3-8

You can pan the map display by tapping on the maplocation that you would like to appear in the centreof the display - the screen will then redraw, at thesame scale, with that location at the centre.
You can zoom in to a chosen area by dragging out abox on the display. The display will zoom to showthe area contained within the box you have drawn. You can drag the box in any direction you like (topleft to bottom right, top right to bottom left, bottomleft to top right, etc.).
If whilst you are dragging the box you decide youhave made a mistake, you can abort the zoom in bymoving the pen back to the point you started from -the box will shrink to nothing and you will hear awarning sound - lift the pen and the operation willbe cancelled.
If you choose a pan location which is near the edgeof the maximum view extent, the location will notalways be redrawn in the centre of the display. Themap display is constrained so it will not moveoutside the maximum extent of the View.
4-5
Map Tools
Sometimes you may find that dragging a zoom boxdoes not increase the scale of the map display. Thishappens when you are at the minimum zoom extent.
You can use the Pan / Zoom tool even if it is notselected as the current map tool. If you hold downthe shift key whilst tapping or dragging a pan /zoom operation will be performed. Also the mapdisplay will zoom in, or out, when the user pressesthe numeric keypad add (+, zoom in) or subtract (-,zoom out) keys (if these are present on your device). Some devices have In and Out buttons whichcorrespond to these keys and zoom the display in orout.

Attribute Field Editors
The attribute editors allow you to view, enter, orchange the attribute values. The configuration ofthe attribute edit fields depends on how the datawas configured in PocketGIS Connection - see thePocketGIS Connection User Manual for details.
4-14
PocketGIS User Manual
Many fields allow you to type in values. If the fieldhas a - tap this to bring up a list of values. Insome cases this will be a list of recent values to saveyou having to type in values again. Some fields areconfigured so you cannot type in a value but canonly select from a popup value list. The date fieldhas a popup calendar - you can also select a dateelement such as month and use the keyboard arrowkeys to step through values. The time field allowsyou to type in numbers or use arrow keys to stepthough values. Other possibilities are a tabbedalphabetic popup; a popup consisting of imageswhich you can select from; sketch and imagebuttons. Sometimes an attribute may have beendefined as read only. You cannot edit read onlyvalues. Some values, such as areas & line lengthsmay have been configured to update themselvesautomatically. On Pocket and Palm-sized PC devicesmany text entry fields automatically adopt title casewithout the need to press the shift or caps key.

Use the OK or Close (X) buttons to leave the SketchPad which save, or discard, the changes respectively.Note that the Sketch will not be stored in thedatabase until you save the Attributes Form changes.
The Sketch Pad is built from the standard WindowsCE Rich Ink control and so the appearance andcapability of the Sketch Pad differs with theoperating system version. Most of thedocumentation for the built in Ink Writer, NoteTaker, and Notes applications (depending on whichone is available on a particular platform) will applyto the PocketGIS Sketch Pad.
4-16
PocketGIS User Manual
In all versions you can make the sketch larger bydrawing off the page. All versions also have controlssimilar to those found in word processors forediting, undo / redo, etc.
The version present in the Handheld PC (CE 2.0) letsyou choose the mode from the Tools menu or thetoolbar. You can choose between Ink (drawing andhandwriting), Select (typing and moving drawings),and Space (inserting space into the sketch).

If the Image Capture Options are set (See Chapter 5)additional access to a remote camera or a cameraapplication on your device is possible.
Press the Browse button to display the ImageBrowser which will display images from storagememory - such as a memory card which has beentaken from a digital camera. Navigate to thelocation of the images you want to browse, select oneof them, and press OK. If you are browsing a digitalcamera memory card the images will be in subfolders of the storage card - see your cameradocumentation for details (or just explore). OnlyJPEG image files can be displayed. When you haveselected the browse folder the Image Browser will bedisplayed allowing you to view and select from allthe images at that location.
4-21
Map Tools
The File menu provides the options to browse adifferent folder and also to delete a selected image(you cannot delete an image that has been protectedusing camera or operating system commands).Select the image you want to assign by tapping on itand press OK. You can also double tap the image toselect and assign it in one action. The browser willclose and the selected image will appear in the ImageSelector.

Press the Select button to select an image file withoutviewing thumbnail images. The chosen file isselected and it’s thumbnail image displayed in theImage Selector window.
The operation of the Browse and Select functions isslightly different when running on a Palm-sized orPocket PC, than when running on a Handheld PC.On a Handheld PC pressing either the Browse orSelect buttons brings up the standard “open file”dialog which allows you to browse to anywhere inthe available storage mediums. On Pocket and Palm-sized PC devices you can only browse to files whichare stored under “My Documents” - this is thestandard operation on these devices. To allow directaccess to images on a storage card removed from adigital camera, the Pocket and Palm-sized PCversions of PocketGIS will automatically detect adigital camera storage card. If such a card isdetected the “open file” dialog will not appear andthe browser will automatically show all the images it
4-23
Map Tools
can find on the card. Similarly the select functionwill display a list of the images on the card whichyou can choose from. If you want to select form filesunder “My Documents” remove the camera card, thebrowse and select functions will then show the “openfile” dialog.
You can clear the assignment of an image bypressing the Clear button in the Image Selector.
Once an image has been selected, the checkboxescontrol what happens when you press OK to closethe Image Selector and make the assignment.
Copy image into the PocketGIS Database will copy theimage file from it’s current location into thePocketGIS Database containing the feature whoseattributes you are changing. If the image is alreadyin the particular PocketGIS Database this checkboxwill be disabled. Delete the original image will removethe image file from it’s current location once it hasbeen copied. If the source image file is protected (by
4-24
PocketGIS User Manual
camera or operating system command), or the imageis already located in a PocketGIS Database, the deleteoption will be disabled.
Press OK in the Image Selector to complete theassignment and perform any copy and / or deleteoperation. If there was an image previously assignedto the attribute, and it is located in the PocketGISDatabase to which the current feature belongs, youwill be asked if you want to delete the previousimage - this will save storage space if the image is nolonger required.
It is a good idea to always copy images into thePocketGIS Database if you have the storage spaceavailable. If you choose to assign images withoutcopying them you will need to ensure that they areavailable in their original location whenever they arerequired - such as for viewing in the attributes formor export. This requires that the card they arestored on is inserted in the machine (you canremove it in-between times, to take more picturesfor example). Note that if you are working withmore than one storage card in a Windows CE devicethe second card will be called “Storage Card2” (thethird “Storage Card3”, etc) and these names canchange if you take cards out and move them around. If you assign images without copying them makesure the storage card retains the same name inWindows CE - if it was called “Storage Card” whenthe images were assigned, and is later called“Storage Card2”, the images will not be located. Ifyou always use the same slot for the card containingthe images you should be alright.
4-25

Snapping
The Snap Button is a toggle, press it once to push itin, press it again to release it. When the Snap buttoncontrol is depressed, the points you enter duringadd and move operations will be snapped to existingmap geometry. The new point will either take theexact coordinates of a snapped to point, or a lineintersection will be calculated for a snapped to line. You can also toggle snapping by typing Ctrl+S.
Snapping only occurs within a certain (very small)tolerance so you will need to tap very close to apoint or line in order to snap to it.
You will have noticed that when you enter a move oradd point you hear an OK sound. When the snapcontrol is checked you only here the OK sound whenthe new point position is snapped. If a point or linewas not found within the search tolerance, the newpoint is still used - but a warning sound is playedinstead.
Snapping does slow down the edit operations so youshould only have the snap control depressed whenyou want snapping to happen.
If you have a customised version of PocketGIS thesnap control may not be visible.

General Tools
Setting up a System of Scale Dependent Grids
You may wish to set up a system of grids whichappear at different scales. For example, you maywant a 1Km grid to display at 1:5000 and a 10Kmgrid to display at 1:25000.
You can achieve this by defining an appropriateTranslation Scheme in PocketGIS Connection (see thePocketGIS Connection User Manual for informationon how to setup Translation Schemes and generatingempty maps). The Translation Scheme can be set upwith features for the 1Km and 10Km grids. ADisplay Scheme can be created and setup so thesmall scale grid does not display at larger scales andcorrespondingly the large scale grid does not displayat small scales. A legend could be created so thegrid lines appear in different colours. The PocketGISConnection New Map will generate a map inPocketGIS - you can use the Create Grid function togenerate the grid lines for the 1Km and 10Km gridfeatures.
Log to File
The Log to File function will save any data receivedvia a serial connection to a file. It can be accessedfrom the Tools->LoggingTools->LoggingTools->LoggingTools->LoggingTools->Logging menu.
6-8
The Connect ToConnect ToConnect ToConnect ToConnect To item allows you to select the serialport the data is to be received on.
The Fi leFi leFi leFi leFi le item shows the file that the data will bestored to. Data is appended to an existing file. Thefile can be changed using the BrowseBrowseBrowseBrowseBrowse button.
The OptionsOptionsOptionsOptionsOptions button displays the port settingoptions.
The ConnectConnectConnectConnectConnect / DisconnectDisconnectDisconnectDisconnectDisconnect button opens theconnection to the serial port and starts saving datato the file; or disconnects from the port and closesthe file.
Data is saved exactly as it is received with noprocessing.
Log to Feature
Log to Feature allows you to automatically createpoint features and set attribute values from externaldata sources such as sensor equipment. Theposition of the feature is taken from the current GPSposition so a GPS receiver must be connected and beproviding an acceptable position.
Two items are provided on the Tools->LoggingTools->LoggingTools->LoggingTools->LoggingTools->Loggingmenu to control logging to features:
6-9
General Tools
Logging DeviceLogging DeviceLogging DeviceLogging DeviceLogging Device allows you set select whichexternal device you are using and the port andconnection parameters. You need to make thesesettings the first time you use a logging device orwhen you change which type of device is being used. You can also use this to connect and disconnect thedevice. To save all settings press the ConnectConnectConnectConnectConnectbutton to establish the connection to the device.Once the current settings are saved the device willbe connected automatically when you press the Logto Feature StartStartStartStartStart button (see below) so you don’tneed to manually connect the device each time youstart logging.

Log Data to FeatureLog Data to FeatureLog Data to FeatureLog Data to FeatureLog Data to Feature allows you to select thefeature that will be created by the logging. Onlylayers / features in the current View are displayed.Pressing the Start Start Start Start Start button will commence logging. Each log reading from the external device will createone feature (adjust the device to control thefrequency of feature creation). The system“acknowledge” beep will sound for each successfulfeature, if there is a problem (e.g. storage full, noGPS position) then the system error beep will soundfor each reading. If logging is in progress the buttonwill become Stop Stop Stop Stop Stop and you can use this to stoplogging. Logging will also stop if the logging deviceis disconnected.
Log to Feature controls also appear on the Devicesmenu of the various map tools. The items aresimilar to those accessed from the Tools menu whenthe device is not connected, or logging is not started, but act as quick action functions when logging is inprogress. So Connect Logging Device becomesDisconnect Logging Device which disconnects thedevice and stops logging without showing a dialogwindow. Likewise Log Data to Feature becomes StopLog Data to Feature.
Data from the external reading is automaticallyassigned to the features attributes base on theInternal Name of the attribute. Any auto setattributes are also assigned. If a given attribute ismissing that data will not be logged. Attributes areas follows:
Radiodetection RD4000
The depth value is assigned to an attribute whoseinternal name is Depth.

Options
Metric Conversion
This option determines the factor used to convertbetween metric and imperial (miles, feet, inches)units. The international standard for suchconversion is 1 inch = 2.54 centimetres. However, usage in the United States is commonly 1 metre =39.37 inches. Although the difference between thesefactors is small it does make a difference whencalculating coordinates and it is important that thecorrect setting is chosen.
If you are working in metric units for both mapstorage and display, or entirely in imperial units, then no metric / imperial conversion will take placeand this setting will not be used.
Note that this setting only applies to conversionswithin the PocketGIS main application and can beapplied when freehand digitising or displayingcoordinates, distances, areas etc. The unitconversion for calculating GPS positions in feet is setfrom within the GPS Receiver options. The LaserRangefinder module does not have a conversionfactor setting and you should configure your lasermeasurement device to work in metric or imperialunits depending on which is used to represent yourdata.

Multiple View Mode
This chapter describes how to use PocketGIS in“Multiple View Mode”.
By default, PocketGIS operates in Multiple ViewMode. This mode is useful if you are working withdifferent sets of map data which you want to accessseparately. Map Views are explained in Chapter 3.
You may wish to switch the application into SingleView Mode which will simplify the View menu byremoving the items related to multiple views.
As the relationship between a Map Layer, Legend, and Display Scheme is maintained in a View, you canalso use this mode to access the same map datausing different Legends & Display Schemes.

GPS Receiver
This chapter explains how to connect a GPS receiverto PocketGIS.
The GPS Receiver component will work with externalGPS receivers supporting the NMEA protocolconnected via a serial port or card slot.
The GPS connection is controlled from the GPSReceiver dialog which is accessed via the GeneralTools Menu.
Selecting GPS Receiver will display the GPS Receiverdialog.

Height Data
Note that heights displayed and stored by PocketGISare ellipsoid heights, with the exception of OSGB andDanish coordinates.
UK GPS
If the map projection is set to “OS Great Britain” GPScoordinates will be shifted according to the OSTN02model. Also note that for OSGB, heights arecorrected to the OSGM02 model.
Danish Projections
Use of the Danish projections requires theinstallation of the Danish Datum Tables from themain installer.
Supported NMEA Position messages
GPS Receiver can receive position information fromthe NMEA GGA, GLL, GGQ and GST sentences.
9-3
GPS Receiver
Only use GGL if your receiver does not support GGAor GGQ. If GGQ or GGA sentences are being receivedthen GLL sentences will be ignored. Note that GLLsentences do not supply data quality or heightinformation and this will not be displayed, stored, orfiltered on.
You can choose to use either, or both, the GGA andGGQ sentences. The GGA sentence does not providecoordinate quality values, and GGQ does not provideHDOP values. Otherwise they are the same. If youwant access to both HDOP and coordinate qualitythen set your receiver to output both of these. Notethat presently, GGQ sentence support is fairly rare.
The Omnistar OMNIPOSA message is supported soposition standard deviation values can be received. This message can be used in conjunction with GGAand / or GGQ messages if HDOP and coordinatequality values are required.
For best results set the NMEA sentences to output atleast once per second. Any less than this and GPSReceiver will report “No GPS Input” regularly. Thetimeout is deliberately tight to ensure that the GPSposition used by PocketGIS is correct.
Windows Mobile GPS Program Port
PocketGIS can connect to a GPS Receiver controlledby the GPS Settings panel in Windows Mobile 5 andlater.
9-4
PocketGIS User Manual
To enable this follow the Windows Mobiledocumentation and ensure that the GPS ProgramPort is a COM port (do not select a GPD port). Onceenabled this COM port can be selected as the GPSport in PocketGIS.
Unless you need the GPS location data to be used inmore than one application at once there is nobenefit in using the Windows Mobile GPS ProgramPort. It is recommended that “Manage GPSautomatically” is unticked in the Access page ofWindows Mobile GPS Settings and that you connectto the GPS device or port directly.
Recommended Port Speed
If the receiver is only configured to output NMEAGGA or GGL sentences then a port speed of 9600 bpsshould be sufficient. If the receiver is configured tooutput many messages or a combination of GGA,GGQ or manufacturer specific messages then it isrecommended that you use the fastest speedavailable. If PocketGIS appears to be droppinginformation (e.g. HDOP or coordinate quality) thenthis can be due to the data not being receivedquickly enough. PocketGIS deliberately puts a verytight limits on the frequency that messages must bereceived to ensure that the data is current andaccurate.
GPS Protocols
The GPS Receiver component currently supports‘NMEA’, ‘Ashtech NMEA’ and OmniSTAR HPprotocols. The Ashtech protocol includes standard
9-5
GPS Receiver
NMEA support and also provides Ashtech specificmodem dialup functionality. If you need protocolsupport which is not currently provided pleasecontact [email protected].
Position Standard Deviation Support
If available from the receiver, position standarddeviation values in metres are displayed by the GPSmonitor. You can also filter on these.
Setting Up GPS Receiver
Before you can use GPS Receiver you must set all theconfiguration options. If you try and connect to aGPS Receiver without visiting each options page youwill be prompted to check any remaining options. When you visit an options page default settings willbe shown - you can accept these defaults withoutmaking any changes - just move to the next page orpress OK.
To ensure that the projected coordinates which aredisplayed and stored by PocketGIS are accurate, youshould carefully check how the GPS Receiver optionsare configured. In particular make sure that the“Convert” options are set correctly. It is advisablefor you to check that positions reported byPocketGIS are consistent with your expectation and /or known positions.

Port Options
This group of options allows you to setup thecommunications port for use with the GPS receiver. You need to consult the manual that came with yourGPS receiver in order to determine the correctoption values. The settings of both the receiver andPocketGIS must match exactly.
Speed
Set the speed, in bits per second, to the speed thatyour GPS receiver outputs data.
If the receiver is only configured to output NMEAGGA or GGL sentences then a port speed of 9600 bpsshould be sufficient. If the receiver is configured to

PocketGISdeliberately puts a very tight limits on the frequencythat messages must be received to ensure that thedata is current and accurate.
Settings
Set this to the character format that your GPSreceiver uses to output data. The options show:number of data bits / parity / number of stop bits.
Projection Options
This page lets you specify the map projection thatthe geodetic coordinate output from the GPSreceiver are translated to. This must be the sameprojection as the map data you are using.

Projection
Select the map projection that you are using. Youcan choose between Universal Transverse Mercator(UTM) and a number of national projectionsincluding the Ordnance Survey (OS) projection.
Note that some projections require that datum tablesare installed. You will be warned if you select aprojection that requires tables that are not present.Any such datum tables will be shown in the productinstaller when you choose a custom installation orthe modify option - see Chapter 1.

This item specifies the distance units generated bythe projection algorithm. For most projections thiswill be preset to the correct value and you will notbe able to change it. For some projections, such asUTM, you can select the units.
9-11
GPS Receiver
The choices are Metres, International Feet, and USFeet. The difference between International and USFeet is the factor used to convert from metres (inwhich the calculation is performed) and feet.International Feet uses the factor 1 inch = 2.54cmand US Feet uses 1 metre = 39.37 inches. Althoughthe difference between these factors is small it doesmake a difference and it is important that thecorrect setting is used.
Convert Options
Your GPS receiver will output position data in aparticular datum. If this datum is the same as theone you have selected in the Map Projection pagethen PocketGIS can use the GPS data directly. However, if the datum output by the receiver isdifferent to the one used by the PocketGIS mapprojection, you must configure the Convert Datumsettings so PocketGIS can make the necessaryadjustments.
It is important that you consult the manual thatcame with your GPS receiver very carefully. SomeGPS receivers only output data in the WGS-84datum. Other receivers will output in a datum ofyour choice. If the receiver has controls which allowyou to choose a datum for coordinates on thereceiver’s own display - you should check to see ifthe receiver also outputs data using this datum (THEDISPLAY AND OUTPUT DATUMS MAY BEDIFFERENT!).

Use the Input Datum popup to specify whether thedata input to PocketGIS from the GPS receiver is inthe same datum as the Map Projection, or whetherthe datum will need to be converted. The InputDatum item specifies the datum that the GPS receiveris using. This is the datum that the GPSThis is the datum that the GPSThis is the datum that the GPSThis is the datum that the GPSThis is the datum that the GPSreceiver is using to output data, not thereceiver is using to output data, not thereceiver is using to output data, not thereceiver is using to output data, not thereceiver is using to output data, not thedatum you wish to use in PocketGIS.datum you wish to use in PocketGIS.datum you wish to use in PocketGIS.datum you wish to use in PocketGIS.datum you wish to use in PocketGIS.
The possible values for Input Datum are dependenton the datum of the current projection (the T oT oT oT oT oitem). Possible options are the datum of the mapprojection, and one or more WGS84 based option.
‘WGS84 - ITRS 2000 (now)’ indicates that the inputposition will be corrected for continental drift. Ifthis is not available for the selected projectiondatum the option ‘World Geodetic System 1984’ is
9-13
GPS Receiver
given. This indicates that a WGS84 (or indeed ITRS)position is expected but that no compensation forcontinental drift is included.
The ViaViaViaViaVia item specifies whether an initial datumconversion is to be applied. At present this is onlyavailable for correcting the input position to ITRS 89/ ETRS 89 before the position is transformed to thedatum selected on the Projection options page.
Sometimes datum conversion takes place via anintermediary datum such as ETRS89. If this is thecase the intermediary datum can be selected as theInput Datum. So, for example, if an ETRS89 positionwas being supplied to PocketGIS by equipment thatperforms this transformation (or comes from acorrection service that provides ITRS 89 / ETRS 89),and outputs positions in ITRS 89 / ETRS 89 youwould choose ‘European TRS 1989’ as the inputdatum. ie. The software will not perform thecorrection because it has already been applied.Conversely if a WGS84 / ITRS2000 position werebeing supplied you would select ‘WGS84 - ITRS 2000(now)’ as the input datum - ETRS89 would becomethe Via datum as PocketGIS would do the conversion.
If the position is being received from equipment thatoutputs a ‘current’ WGS 84 - ITRS 2000 (now)position then the Input Datum Input Datum Input Datum Input Datum Input Datum item of theConvertConvertConvertConvertConvert page should be set to ‘WGS-84 - ITRS 2000(now)’.
If you are using a low accuracy (e.g.. 10m) GPSreceiver then select ‘WGS-84 - ITRS 2000 (now)’. Inthis case the ViaViaViaViaVia setting does not matter as thedifference will be tiny compared to the overallaccuracy of the position.

PocketGIS User Manual
The GPS Receiver component has preprogrammedvalues for datum transformations from WGS84 tothe datum of the selected coordinate system. However you may, if you wish, specify customvalues. If you do you should ensure that the valuesare correct, the responsibility for ensuring this is100% yours.
If the input datum differs from the T oT oT oT oT o datum thenthe Parameters button will be enabled and pressing itdisplayed the Transformation Parameters window.
By default the parameters are set to use thepreprogrammed values in the GPS receiver moduleand it is these values that are displayed. If you wishto use your own parameters untick the “Usestandard values” box and type in the requiredvalues. If a Via datum is enabled, the user transformationparameters are applied after the via transformation.
Note that user supplied values are for a 7 parameterHelmert transformation NOT a Molodenskytransformation. The displayed preset values are for7 parameter Helmert transformations or, where onlydelta X,Y,Z is specified, for a Molodenskytransformation.
Note also that datum transformations are unrelatedto local shift, and that local shift is unrelated todatum transformations. Local shift is an eastingsand northings delta which is applied afterrectangular coordinates have been generated.

Toenable average position calculation tick the Enableposition averaging box and enter the number ofpoints you wish to be averaged.
Once enabled the current position will be calculatedby averaging the chosen number of points. If youhave enabled the display of geographic coordinatesthen the original geographic coordinate will be thecurrent reading from the GPS receiver and theconverted geographic coordinate will be the averagereading as modified by the datum conversion - ifone is in effect. The number of points that havebeen averaged is shown after the projectedcoordinate as “~n” where n is number of points. Ifthe number of points is less than that specified inthe “Average” options page the coordinate will beshown in square brackets and you will not be able tocapture from GPS.
If you have specified filter criteria in the Filteroptions page then points that do not meet thecriteria will not be included in the averagecalculation.

Local Shift
A local shift is an additional adjustment in eastingsand northings which is applied after any datumconversion and once the geographic positionreported by the GPS receiver has been projected intothe chosen coordinate system. Local shift can beused to compensate for differences between GPSgenerated coordinates and base mapping for aparticular area. A local shift consists of a number ofpoints which contain “Original” and “Actual”coordinates for control points that are known toyou. The average difference between the originaland actual coordinates for each point is used tocompute the shift.
If you use local shift then the responsibility forensuring that coordinates are accurate is 100%yours.
By default the Local Shift functionality is disabledand will not appear in PocketGIS menus or controls. To enable Local Shift controls go to the “Local Shift”page of the GPS Receiver Options sheet.
9-38
PocketGIS User Manual
Tick the Enable local shift controls box. This optionspage also allows you enable or disable theapplication of a local shift and also select the currentlocal shift from any you may have defined. Some laser functions operate via a number of steps. You can restart a function at any time by re-selectingit from the function menu. The current function isindicated with a tick in the menu. You can stop afunction by selecting Cancel Function from the menu,or by selecting another function. You can repeat astep by selecting Undo from the function menu.
Laser Control Point
A key concept of the laser functions is the controlpoint. This provides the point of reference fromwhich a laser shot is interpreted. Many laserfunctions are not available until the control point isestablished. Once established the control point isdisplayed on screen with a cross:
Other Symbols
Other symbols that can appear when using the laserfunctions are as follows.
The circle with a diagonal cross highlights the lastdigitised point when capturing features in theCapture Tool. When modifying existing features inthe Geometry Tool this symbol denotes the “currentpoint” (See Chapter 4).
10-14
PocketGIS User Manual
The circle with a square cross highlights a vertexthat has been selected as part of a laser function.
Laser Mode
The laser mode controls the interpretation of thelaser shot and the behaviour of some functions. Themode determines:
• Whether to take a fore shot or a back shot.
• Whether the shot is part of a traverse (i.e.tracking from one position to another) or a sideshot (i.e. a one off shot).
Fore / Back Shot Mode
In fore shot mode the distance and bearing of a lasershot are interpreted as starting from the controlpoint and projecting forward.
In back shot mode the distance and bearing of alaser shot are interpreted as starting from apreviously unknown position and projecting back tothe control point.
In short: in fore shot mode you stand at the controlpoint and shoot at something else; in back shotmode you stand somewhere else and shoot at thecontrol point.
You can change the fore / back mode using themenu:
10-15
Laser Rangefinder
The dot indicates the current mode.
Alternatively you can use the F and B buttons on theLaser Bar if it has been enabled.
The current mode is indicated by the depressedbutton.
Side Shot / Traverse Mode
In side shot mode a laser function will take a singlelaser shot, perform it’s function, and then finish. The laser control point will not be changed.
In traverse mode a laser function will iterate - it willtake a laser shot, move the control point to the newposition implied by the shot, and then wait to takeanother shot and repeat the process.
In short: use side shot mode to take a one off shot;use traverse mode to take a sequence of shotsmoving from one point to the next.
You can change the side shot / traverse mode usingthe menu:
10-16
PocketGIS User Manual
The dot indicates the current mode.
Alternatively you can use the S and T buttons on theLaser Bar if it has been enabled.
The current mode is indicated by the depressedbutton.
Laser Buffer
Laser shots are stored in a buffer prior to being usedby laser functions. This means you can take severalshots with the laser without having to interact withPocketGIS. You can then turn to PocketGIS and usethe laser functions to process the shots in the buffer. This saves you from having to refer back to theapplication on your mobile device after every shot.
The number of shots in the buffer is displayed in theLaser Monitor which was described earlier in thischapter.
Note that in traverse mode the laser buffer is clearedafter each shot is processed. Since you are on themove only one shot at a time will be relevant.

feedback on screen to verify that “wild distortion” isnot occurring due to the presence of a significantmagnetic anomaly. The computed factor will bedisplayed in a dialog and you can accept or confirmthe new correction factor.
Once accepted the new factor will be applied to alllaser bearings. The factor will be displayed in thelaser monitor and in the correction options page (asdescribed earlier in this chapter).
Delete Target Functions
The Delete Target function will delete a singletemporary target position.
To use this function select Delete Target from theOther Laser Functions sub-menu of the current tool’sfunction menu.

You will be prompted to tap on the target to bedeleted. Tap on the target symbol.
The selected target will be deleted.
The Delete All Targets function will remove alltemporary target positions. You will be asked toconfirm.
Shot Buffer Functions
The Discard First Shot function will delete the lastlaser shot from the buffer.
To use this function select Discard First Shot from theOther Laser Functions sub-menu of the current tool’sfunction menu.
The Discard Last Shot function will delete the lastlaser shot from the buffer.

The Empty Shot Buffer function will delete all lasershots currently in the buffer. You will be asked toconfirm.
Pole End Digitise Function
This function allows you to digitise the point at thebase of a target pole with two mirrors. It isanticipated that this is used to digitise points at thebottom of holes.
To use this function select Pole End Digitise from theOther Laser Functions sub-menu of the current tool’sfunction menu.
10-34
PocketGIS User Manual
You will be asked for the pole height and thedistance between the mirrors on the pole. You thentake a shots at the top mirror and the lower mirrorto digitise the point at the end of the pole.
Indirect Digitise Function
This function allows you to digitise a point using amirror which is not exactly on the point.
To use this function select Indirect Digitise from theOther Laser Functions sub-menu of the current tool’sfunction menu.
This functions asks for two shots:
The first is to the mirror to establish an accuratedistance.
The second is toward the actual point. This distanceis taken from the first (mirror) shot and the bearingtaken from the second (point) shot.
Measureline Offset Function
This allows you to digitise a point offset from ameasureline.
This function does not use a measuring device but isincluded here so temporary targets can be used torepresent the start and end of the measureline.
10-35
Laser Rangefinder
To use this function select Measureline Offset fromthe Other Laser Functions sub-menu of the currenttool’s function menu.
This function asks you to select the start and endpoints of the measureline, these can be map featuresor temporary targets.
You will be prompted for the length, from the firstpoint, towards the second point, where the offsetbegins. You will also be asked for the offset distance.A point is digitised, at the offset distance, to the“right” of the measureline - the offset isperpendicular to the measureline. If you want theoffset to be to the “left” then enter a negative offset.
Bilaterate and Digitise
This function prompts you to take two shots at apoint from different locations - a new position isthen added to the current feature or a point created.
10-36

Triangulate and Digitise
This function prompts you to stand at a point andtake two shots at other known points - a newposition is then added to the current feature or apoint created.
Insert Measurement Function
The Insert Measurement function is available fromthe Attributes Form function menu.
To insert a measurement from a laser shot firstcomplete the operation with the laser so the shot isin the buffer. In the attributes form select theattribute field which is to receive the value and thenchoose Insert Measurement from the AttributesFunction Menu.
10-37
Laser Rangefinder
A sub-menu containing the values from the first shotin the buffer will appear - choose the one you wantto insert into the attribute. Where a measurementhas more than one value you can insert the variousitems into different attributes by selecting theattribute and then Insert Measurement .
For shots which consist of only one value (e.g.Height) selecting the value into an attribute willclear the shot from the buffer. The next time youbring up the Insert Measurement menu the next shotwill be displayed (if any). Shots which consist ofseveral values are not cleared automatically. Toclear a shot select Discard First Shot from the OtherLaser Functions sub-menu.
Working with Total Stations
This component can be used with Total Stations aswell as “Laser Rangefinders”. If you connect to aTotal Station then the operation of the LaserRangefinder component is slightly different.
Note that the “Set Control and Digitise” function isnot available when connected to a Total Station.
10-38
PocketGIS User Manual
In order to digitise using a Total Station the ControlPoint needs to be set and, following that, at least onereference shot to a known coordinate is required toallow the software to calculate grid bearings. If youset the Control Point using the “Bilaterate ControlPoint” function then both the station position(Control point) and the relationship to grid bearingsis established. If you set the Control Point byentering a coordinate, from GPS, or by making a shotto the new position then you will need to makeanother shot to a known coordinate (map feature ortarget) using the “Alignment Shot” function.
The “Alignment Shot” function asks you to select apoint and then make a shot to it - you can then usethe “Laser Digitise” function to capture data.
It is expected that you will make use of thetemporary target functionality when working withtotal stations. The “Enter Target” function allowsyou to create targets by typing in a coordinate. Usetargets to represent mirrors. Most functions willwork with targets or map feature points.
10-39
Laser Rangefinder
Using the software in “traverse mode” requires anextra step when working with total stations. Eachtime you move the station to the forward point inthe traverse you will need to make an alignmentshot to the previous (or other known) point beforemaking the next traverse shot.
