EDITION 110 @pockprep Fri 15th June 2018 On Saturday morning we held our Open Morning for this term. I was thrilled to welcome many visitors to the school who all shared how impressed they were with our facilities along with the warmth and friendly atmosphere of the school. Whilst we dont have Saturday lessons as at the Senior School, there were a number of pupils in school having a great time making Lego creations. Following this morning the School Office has been involved in ar- ranging assessment and taster days for new starters. This is a busy week for inter-school sport with pupils competing in cricket, athletics and rounders. Our athletes travelled last week to Gateshead for the HMC meeting involving many schools from across the North East. Congratu- lations to all pupils who represented the school, particularly: Y4 Girls long jump – Tabitha Speight 2 nd Y5 Girls long jump – Belle Sweeting 3 rd Y4 Boys throwing – Charles Wright 2 nd Y5 Girls 200m – Emily Jones 4 th Y5 Girls 600m – Laura Brooks 1 st and broke a school record Y6 Girls high jump – Islay Cunliffe-Lister 2 nd Y6 Boys high jump – Oliver Foster 4 th Y6 Girls 800m – Niamh Clements 1 st and broke a school record Y6 Boys ball throw – Luke Woodhead 1 st This week some of these same pupils were competing at the regional finals of the IAPS athletics meeting in Doncaster; success at this meeting sees pupils move through to the national finals, which are held in the final week of term in Birmingham. The pupils involved are Laura Brooks, Niamh Clements, Imogen Spear, Luke Woodhead and the Y6 Boys relay team consisting of Alexander Preece, Harvey Laverack, Luca Maude and Luke Woodhead. On Wednesday we welcomed other Year 6 cricket teams to school as we hosted the Pocklington U11 cricket sixes tournament. Boys at this level are playing with hard ball, so there is a step up in the level of the game. On arriv- ing back in my office later in the afternoon I was so impressed to see the victors trophy on my desk. Congratulations to these boys. Friday sees them travel to the HMC cricket tournament and we look forward to hearing how they progress against some challenging competition. The U11 girls are excitedly looking forward to their HMC rounders tourna- ment, which we host. Up to twelve teams compete in a fantastic event held on Big Field. As with the boys, we look forward to hearing how they progress in their competition. At the younger end of school, Mrs Cobb and the Pre-Prep teachers wel- comed new Pre-School and Reception starters on Wednesday to a Stay and Play session. It is lovely to see these young children exploring their class- rooms and outdoor areas, along with starting to develop friendships with those children they will be learning and playing with in September. Many of the new Reception starters also came for lunch, along with their parents. It was so clear to me that both children and parents enjoyed their school din- ner. Year 1 had a fascinating trip to Wolds View Garage, as they continue their topic of learning about journeys. It is always good to know some basic car mechanics, so these children are well prepared for future expeditions. Next Thursday is the Whole School Walk. Every pupil of both Schools takes part in walking different lengths of this major school event. It is a great activi- ty, exploring the Yorkshire Wolds in the immediate area outside Pocklington. For many years this has been a charity fundraising event at the Senior School, whereas at the Prep School we have simply enjoyed the walk. This year our Charity Reps felt it was time the Prep School viewed this as a fund- raising event for the charities being supported by each of our Houses. You should have received an information letter and sponsor form and I do hope you feel able to support the children in this way. Do enjoy the weekend. Mr Wright

What we have done at

school this week..

Pre-school had had a superb week and it has proved extremely exciting to enter the classroom each morn-ing to discover what has happened overnight to the seeds we planted. Each day we have observed different stages of their growth and have all completed independent recordings of this in our 'Diary of a seed' Well done Pre-school - what a fantastic week. In Reception this week we have continued with our Every Child Wild theme. Some of the activities have been to cre-ate a nature table with labels, do some feet painting for a special card, read a wildlife story in the outdoor area and watch a live wildlife webcam on Springwatch! The children have also done their final piece of assessed writing in Reception - it is wonderful to see the progress that they have all made since September. In Maths we did some 2 digit number recognition, number problem solving and solving problems involving doubling and halving. The weeks are getting busier and busier and of course next week we have the wonderful school walk to look forward to. Miss Bilham from pre-school and Miss Thompson will be helping my class as I am unable to do the walk but I look for-ward to hearing all about it when the class return to school! Have a super WILD weekend. Mrs Afford & Miss Thompson Rec SOTW is Kitty Moll for wonderful creativity and imagination Year 1 have had a wonderful week. We have been reading Paddington Bear as part of our 'Journeys' topic. We particularly liked 'Paddington at the Tower'. We looked at the Journey Paddington made from Peru to London - what a long way! In the independent areas we have been making marmalade sandwiches and designing a new coat for Paddington. In literacy we have been writing instructions for Paddington to make his sandwiches. In maths this week we have been looking at sharing and division. I have been so impressed with all of Year One. They can all share gummy bears between different amounts of people and write the division sum - wow! As we write this weeks news we are looking forward to visiting Wolds View Garage on Thursday afternoon to learning more about transport. My Maths - Sharing 1X SOTW: Francesca Mather - Wow - you have really impressed me with your writing and enthusiasm! Have a super weekend. Miss Carless Year 2 - in 2X we have been ordering and counting in 5’s as well as looking at speedy mental maths skills using all four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In literacy we have been working on how it would feel arriving in the Polar Regions generating lots of adjectives and working on descriptive phrases to describe them. We also looked at Captain Scott’s journey and thought of questions we could ask, where the answers are found in the guided reading text - we used this as our own comprehension activity where we answered each other’s ques-tions. The children also compared both Polar Regions for similarities and differences and were amazed that Antarc-tica was a desert! This immersing in Polar Region vocabulary led the children to write their own Polar Region expe-dition adventure stories! In 2Y the children have been creating their own treasure maps trying to use a variety of directional language to help find where 'X' marks the spot! They have also been learning about how to systematically solve problems in Maths, including how to check their answers for accuracy. In our topic work we have been examining why rainforests are so important. We attempted a debate where the chil-dren had to pretend they were tribe members disputing the construction of a new road. They also examined the sto-ry 'The Great Kapok Tree' answering questions to show their understanding of the story and its moral and created a fact file about a rainforest creature. All of Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Design and Technology centre in the senior school. They all made their very own trebuchet with the guidance of Mr Ellis and Mr Waine. Following this adventure 2Z have been working on instructional writing in Literacy and they have been working on problem solving in Maths. 2X - Ralph for his progress in reading. 2Y - Georgiana Powell for really pushing herself in her learning. 2Z - Harry Preece for super contribution in the Design Adventure. Pease can Year 2 parents check to see if they have a blue sleeping bag that doesn't belong to them, from the year 2 Camp Out. Many thanks.

What we have done at

school this week..

This week Year 3 have focused on Ancient Greek City States. They have researched using non-fiction books and websites to find similarities and differences between them. We have had a debate about which City State they would like to have lived in and the children have voted, the ancient way, using pebbles. We have com-pared the democracy in Athens to our democracy today and have taken a virtual tour around The Houses of Parliament. In Maths we have re-capped Time and used the grid method of multiplication to times two digit numbers togeth-er. We have begun our unit on Perimeter by practising our measuring skills to find length and look forward to doing some investigations using perimeter next week. Please remember that we will be taking part in our school charity walk on Thursday. The weather may be warm so please ensure the children have sun cream, hat and water with them. A rain coat would also be a good idea with the English weather! Thank you for your on-going support. Mrs Rogers and Miss Shepherd Year 4 - We had a fantastic day at the Yorkshire Museum on Tuesday. The children were very well behaved

and staff at the museum commented on how brilliant they were. We enjoyed a Viking workshop and made

leather belts. Hopefully, the belts will assist with costumes for our Viking day this Friday. The children also com-

pleted a huge reading comprehension, searching the museum and reading about exhibits.Special thanks to Mr

Bull for all his organisation.

Back in the classroom, we have reviewed the grid method for multiplication and worked hard on our humorous

stories about Toothless the dragon. Next week, we will be creating a newspaper article about our Pocklington

Viking Raid.

Year 5 started the week by rolling up their trousers, donning their wellies and heading for the Beck. Mr. Ott led the year group in many different activities incorporating many more aspects of the curriculum as well as Geography including Science (minibeasts) and PSHE (environment and pollution). The children said that they'd had a fantastic day. Thank you Mr. Ott for organising it. In the classroom they have been continuing creating their story books. They seem really proud of them and, having seen and read some from all classes, they should be. In History we have been looking at sacrifice and the punishment of children, enjoyed by children and teacher alike! With three weeks to go of term, there's still much to do and some thought to how they'll be as year 6 ambassadors and the appropriateness of their actions is still important. I know they'll make us proud next year as they have this. Year 6 - Monday and Tuesday saw a quiet beginning to the week and a chance to catch our breath after last week’s hectic start to the new half term. Whether we like it or not, we are starting to prepare for next year and on Wednesday Mrs Edwards, the School librarian and her team, invited the year group across to ‘Big School’ to get a taster of what was waiting for those going on to our Senior School. The Library is an impressive facility and Mrs Edwards puts her heart and soul into making it a wonderful working environment. Her enthusiasm for all things literary is infectious and the experience certainly whet the children’s appetite for more. As a note she did say that any children going on to the Senior School in September were welcome to take books out over the summer, she did point out however that there is a strict code when borrowing books. The weather is being very kind to us this summer, athletics and cricket are so much more enjoyable when the days are long and warm, can I therefore remind everyone about the importance of sun hats and sun cream when out and about. On Wednesday the boys put in a great performance to remain undefeated and win the cricket tournament that we host and on Friday they travel to Leeds to compete in the tough HMC competition. Our athletes are also on the move and on Thursday go to Doncaster to compete in the preliminary round of the IAPS meeting; we wish all competitors good luck in their activities. Wednesday and Friday of next week sees more rounders and cricket fixtures and on Thursday we are trekking over the Wolds in our sponsored walk. Wish us luck!
