DAEGU PRIORY was pleased to invite Oblates and benefactors for the Amhrein Courtyard
Concert at the courtyard of Daegu Priory House for the 128th
Anniversary of foundation of our
congregation. The concert took place on Sept. 24 evening starting with the Vespers at 5:30 p.m.
followed by an outdoor supper and concert. The preparation committee of the annual Amhrein
Festival is always composed by the junior Sisters in preparation for the perpetual vows. This year,
six Sisters were in charge of this event.
After a pleasant supper, Mother Lumen Choi delivered an opening speech with a recitation of one
of the poems of our pioneer sister, Sr. Crysostoma Schmidt OSB, who wrote several poems under
hardship at Oksadoc Hard Labor Camp from 1949 to 1954. It was told that all her poems were
written with a short pencil on the cigarette paper leftovers of the North Korean soldiers.
The program was followed by a performance featuring our musical teachers, clarinetist Mr. Jeon
JinTae, violinist Mrs. Kim JeonAe, classic guitarist Mr. Kim ByongHyon, cellist Miss Bae KyuHye
and members of our community. Everyone took to the stage with a little bit of what was learnt from
the last months during weekly musical lessons provided by the Procurator Office. There were also
numbers such as harmonica played by Sr. Angela Shin, flute played by novice Theresa Cho, a
choral novitiate conducted by Sr. Hugo Kim, a small orchestra composed by recorders, and other
combinations of clarinet and piano, violin and piano, piano trio and guitars.
Everybody thanked God for sending us some drops of rains only at the end of the concert. In fact,
the local weather forecast predicted a rainy day on this day. It seemed that heaven was waiting so
we could enjoy this commemoration.

Thursday, September 19:
As the Chuseok or Korean Thanksgiving fell on Thursday, September 19, the country was filled
with holiday spirit as families gather, share love, news, holiday gifts from Sept. 18 through 20. And
of course, the monastic community of Sasudong House was not an exception. Many gifts were
exchanged between benefactors and our community.
On Sept. 18, the whole community gathered in the refectory after lunch to make the traditional half-
moon-shaped rice cake, seongpyeon for the Chuseok holiday.
The Chuseok holiday started with a Thanksgiving Mass presided over by our chaplain Fr. Dionysius
Park at 7 o’clock followed by a festive breakfast. It was beautiful to see postulants dressed with new
hanboks on this day.
After breakfast, the whole community went to the graveyard to pay respect to deceased Sisters and
in the evening, a movie session was set up in the courtyard, so Sisters could enjoy the film “A Song
for you” under the full moon of Chuseok.

Joseph Aigner and Anna Aigner had eight children. Sr. Arsatia was
born as their second child on February 2, 1917. She was baptized as
Maria the next day.
All the children helped their parents’ farming while attending
school. The family was a very devout Catholic and their home
upbringing was excellent.
Sr. Arsatia finished her schooling of elementary and middle schools
and then worked at their farm about two years. On April 25, 1937,
she moved to Tutzing to attend Tutzing’s high school. But in 1938,
this high school was closed by the Nazi government. Then, without
high school graduation she entered Tutzing MBS on September 1,
1938. She was clothed on October 28, 1939 and became a Novice.
On October 29, 1940, she made her first profession.
Sr. Arsatia as postulant in Tutzing
Sr. Arsatia’s younger sister Anna entered also Tutzing MBS and became Sr.Helmtrudis
pronouncing her first vows on December 8, 1944. Thus, two Aigner sisters became our MBS Sisters.
After her first profession, Sr. Arsatia was missioned to Korea. On November 27, 1940, she boarded
a train that would take her to Korea via Russia and China. She was with Sr. Hirmark who was
bound to Manila, the Philippines. They wore the regular street clothes to pass the communist
country, Russia. This train ride took over two weeks. Finally she arrived at Wonsan at 8:30 p.m. on
December 12, 1940. Luckily she met a helpful guide who led her to Wonsan Priory House. There
she clothes again with religious garments.
At that time Sr. Maria Rhim was teaching catechism to the village old ladies. She went with Sr.
Maria and listened to Sr. Maria’s teaching. Sr. Maria needed to repeat one sentence 10 times since
the illiterate old ladies were slow to catch the new teachings of Catholic catechism. Thus, Sr. Arsatia
learned Korean pretty well. She then was sent to ShinGoSan Station but she got very sick after eating
some food that didn’t agree with her stomach. She came back to Wonsan. After a year of recuperation,
she went back to ShinGoSan Station. There she found her favorite work with animals and farming.
