BALLAD ASSIGNMENT

The ballad is a very old form of poetry. Ballads tell a story, usually of adventure, gallantry, romance, or tragedy. They are often set to music.

Here is the most common ballad pattern. Ballads usually use four-line stanzas with rhyme and rhythm.

Your assignment is to write your own ballad. Follow these steps.

1. Select a “situation”. Write about a story or event that connects to the larger theme all of your poems revolve around.

2. Make a list of events that are going to tell your story. Arrange the events in order, and decide how many stanzas you will have to write, and what the topic for each stanza will be.

3. Write your ballad. It should be a minimum of 5 stanzas.
