Open House Reps: Eric Nathanson, Gillian Guidetti Katy Weinberg (Global Health Program) About the Organization: Boston Children's Hospital is a 395-bed comprehensive center for pediatric health care. As one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States, Children's offers a complete range of health care services for children from birth through 21 years of age. (Our services can begin interventions at 15 weeks gestation and in some situations we also treat adults.) We have approximately 25,000 inpatient admissions each year and our 200+ specialized clinical programs schedule 557,000 visits annually. Last year the hospital performed more than 26,500 surgical procedures and 158,700 radiological examinations. Our team of physicians and nurses has been recognized by a number of independent organizations for overall excellence and we're proud to share some notable examples with you here. Practicum: Operationalizing BCH Access Standards Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) is advancing its access journey to improve outcomes for patients, families, and referring providers. As a part of the journey, in 2015, the enterprise created and approved 7 standards related to patient and provider access. In 2016, BCH is planning to initiate a strategic effort to operationalize these standards for colleague participation. Under the direction of the BCH Enterprise Project Management Office, the practicum will focus on students assisting to determine reliable metrics to measure adherence to the approved standards, determine a baseline measure (current state) for each clinical foundation, and ultimately create a scalable playbook for areas to improve and measure their performance using Lean Six Sigma Methodology*. *Lean Six Sigma methodology training to be provided

!Open House Rep: Heather Ritchie About the Organization: zakipoint Health’s data analysis softwareacts as a data and services hub, connecting employers, employees, vetted healthcare providers and services, and disease management specialists to create a holistic healthcare value management system. Our tool facilitates the discovery of areas of concern, high-risk populations, early indication of chronic conditions such as the onset of diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases, and offers recommendations for interventions that address these areas of concern —and reduce costs over the long term. Practicum 1: Execute on Inbound Marketing Strategy (Digital Marketing Manager) As part of the zakipoint Health team, you will be directly shaping our product and company marketing strategy, working closely with our VPs of Product Management, Marketing, and Accounts in this early-stage company. Open House Rep: Jordan Jarvis About the Organization: The Young Professionals Chronic Disease Network (YP-CDN) is a global network of emerging leaders who drive non-communicable disease (NCD) policy, research, capacity building, and social change. We believe NCDs – including cancer, heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes, as well as their shared risk factors tobacco, alcohol and junk food – are fundamental matters of social and economic justice and they present significant challenges for the global health community. By harnessing the talents and energies of the next generation of health leaders, YP-CDN is building a movement – part social, part technical – that is rooted in the evidence, experience, and insights of our members across the globe. Practicum: Working toward availability and affordability of non-communicable disease (NCD) medicines in Kenya and India We are seeking a practicum student to take on a project to evaluate the extent of inclusion of essential non-communicable disease (NCD) medicines on national essential medicines lists in Kenya and India, to help us shed light on how these are tied to national procurement and reimbursement, and how these policies impact availability and affordability of medicines. The results of this study will be instrumental for driving YP-CDN local advocacy activities in these countries, and study methods will serve as a template to apply similar studies in other countries. Furthermore, these results will also be utilized for our advocacy activities at the global level (WHO, UN).

Open House Rep: Leena Sharma About the Organization: Community Catalyst’s first priority is quality affordable health care for all. Since 1998, we have provided leadership and support to state and local consumer organizations, policymakers, and foundations working to change the health care system so it serves everyone – especially vulnerable members of society. Community Catalyst is a national non-profit advocacy organization working to build the consumer and community leadership that is required to transform the American health system. We believe that this transformation will happen when consumers are fully engaged and have an organized voice. Our staff of experienced policy analysts, attorneys, community organizers, and communications specialists works with organizations in more than 40 states. We have helped these organizations achieve wide-reaching reforms in many areas including Medicaid policy, prescription drug prices, and diversity in the health care workforce. Community Catalyst’s contributions range from policy analysis and technical assistance to managing national campaigns involving dozens of organizations. Practicum: Medicaid Funding Experiment in NY The State of NY is embarking upon an enormous experiment with its Medicaid funding called the Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) Program. DSRIP´s purpose is to fundamentally restructure the health care delivery system by reinvesting in the Medicaid program, with the primary goal of reducing avoidable hospital use by 25% over 5 years. Up to $6.42 billion dollars are allocated to this program with payouts based upon achieving

predefined results in system transformation, clinical management and population health. We are looking for a practicum student who would be able to immerse themselves in learning about this program and provide some analysis about how it affects consumers. A written summary of the research, in the form of a white paper, issue brief, or similar document, would be required. The specific focus of the research will depend on what information is available, what the initial findings tell us, and the specific interests of the student. With that caveat, examples of research questions we might seek to answer include: What kinds of projects are the (Performing Provider Systems) PPSs in NY selecting? Where are they located? What communities do they target?

• Which of these projects have a discernable health equity focus? What specifically does that look like?

• How do PPSs include (or not include) meaningful consumer feedback in their operations? Is there a consumer advisory council or do consumers have a role on their governing boards? If a structured role for consumers exists in a particular PPS, what is the PPS doing to be sure that role is meaningful and not tokenized?

• What kinds of social service investments are PPSs making? • Do any of the PPS projects seek to address the social and

economic determinants of health? How? • How are PPSs shifting their focus to patient-centered care? • How are PPS projects integrating behavioral health and

physical health care? • What kinds of consumer-friendly quality measures are PPSs

using? The practicum student would be working with Andi Mullin, a Senior State Advocacy Manager at Community Catalyst who provides technical assistance to Community Catalyst’s Voices for Better Health partners in New York.
