A Note from Pastor Karla
Happy New Year to you!
As we throw out our 2017 calendars and look to
2018, I am reminded of the "long days and short
years" we experience as humans. As a child,
envisioning the year 2018 looked flying cars, meals
pulled directly from the television screen, and
telephones where you might interact face-to-
face...and we aren't that far off! I was recently reading online that there
are six car companies working on hover vehicles right now! It really is
fascinating to think about the speed of technology and all that has been
accomplished in the last century.
As our world rapidly changes, though, there is one thing that never
changes...God. God remains. That doesn't mean our perception of God
doesn't shift, in fact in true discipleship there is always movement; there is
always change. But, it is more of an uncovering of what has always been
and always will be. We can rest in that knowledge as we enter a new year.
We can also rely on the message that Jesus came to share with us, a
message that is embodied in Christ--to love God and love our neighbors for
the sake and glory of God and God's Kingdom.
This past fall we began a series entitled The Way in Words. The early
followers of Jesus called themselves followers of The Way. That phrase
says a lot about Jesus' intention for the message he lived and died for.

The Way invokes an image of movement. The Way
implies direction. The Way supersedes any religious
institution or organization. The Way effects every area
of our lives. When Jesus spoke about The Way, he did so
with parables--parables that explained the
characteristics of the Kingdom of God. But, Jesus didn't
just talk, he also lived out the Kingdom of God. This
winter we will be exploring that more through The Way
in Action. I hope you will join us to hear more about the
central message that Jesus taught us. This series directly
connects with where God is moving us as a community--
to be a more "inside-out" church--in theology circles, we
call this "missional".
So let us continue together to Experience Jesus, Journey
into Deeper Faith, Strengthen the Church, and
Transform our World, not because it is our duty as
Christians, but because it is a privilege to be a part of the
movement of God--The Way!

A Note from Pastor Karla Continued
Session Meeting Highlights December 13, 2017
Session welcomed new Deacons Nicole Hage, Rylie Hage, Jeannie Spies, and Bev Wickstrom. They each delivered a statement of faith, after which their election was confirmed by unanimous vote. They will take office after being ordained/installed during worship services on January 7, 2017.
The Ministry Information Form (MIF) required to recruit a new Associate Pastor has been approved by the Presbytery and the PCUSA and has been posted on the national web site.
Joel Miller, Chair of the Stewardship Committee, announced that pledges for 2018 were at $860,000 from 266 giving units, against a goal of $1,000,000.
Steve Smith, Chair of the Finance Committee, presented a preliminary operating budget for 2018, showing income and expenses balanced at $1,250,000. The budget is to be refined over the next month and presented for final session approval in January.
Bruce Kunkel and Melissa Mullins presented plans for the reconfiguration of the church offices, along with a proposed “not to exceed” budget of $90,000. The project and budget were approved by unanimous vote of session.
Recruitment activities continue for the positions of Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care, Director of Community Life, Director of Worship, and Communications Coordinator.
Rev. Shaw paid tribute to Elders completing their terms of ser-vice this month; they are Larry Blenis, Allen Hobbs, Bruce Kunkel, Mark Olcott, Bob Simoneau, Ryan Spradling, and Kathy Wright.

After 12 years of consistent service,
Paul Diller is stepping down from his
volunteer position as Clerk of Session
and moving to Assistant Clerk effective
at the end of January. Paul has been a
gift to our church through his steadfast
spirit and diligence, maintaining the order of our records, al-
ways in a timely manner. As a result of his commitment for
over a decade, we have been able to meet Presbytery require-
ments year after year with very little need for improvement.
Thank you, Paul, for your support of our church through the
ups and downs of church family life. Your integrity, maturity,
and consistency have provided us with a strong center. Many
blessings on you in this new
season with a lot less meetings!

Communications Coordinator
Originally from Germany, Julia found her new home in San Diego roughly two years ago. She has an
international background, organizational skills, as well as an MA in Communications. Julia is an active
member of PLCPC and is now helping to spread the mission as the new Communications
Coordinator. She likes being outdoors, writing and traveling, and spending time with her husband,
Rickey and their two dogs.

Interim Director of Music
Alicia McMillan has served the PLCPC music ministry for the last 17 years. In addition to stepping in as
our Interim Director of Music, she will continue to serve as the Organist and Director of Children's and
Youth Choirs. Alicia earned music degrees from University of Tampa in Florida, Northwestern Universi-
ty in Chicago and teaching credential in music from National University. Alicia currently serves as sub-
dean in the San Diego chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She has been an active music educa-
tor and private instructor for the last 17 years.
APNC Report to the Congregation
January 2, 2018
The Committee on Ministry of San Diego Presbytery approved Point Loma Church’s Ministry Information
Form (position description) for a part-time Associate Pastor of Pastoral Care but required us to conduct a na-
tionwide search rather than a local search. This will take more time but it will be more inclusive. A member
of the Committee on Ministry, Peggy Johnston, is assisting us as Presbytery Liaison and we have also been
aided by Michael Mudgett, Executive Presbyter, and Linda Therien, Stated Clerk.
Your Associate Pastor Nominating Committee (APNC) is now reviewing applicants and conducting interviews
for the position. We are searching for a compassionate pastor to help Pastor Karla with Pastoral Care and
Memorial Services and to help carry out PLCPC’s 2015 Mission Study, “Change and Regeneration.”
Members of the APNC are John Pearson, Chair, Ann Brooks, Buck Buchanan, and Cynthia Queen.

We are delighted to have Evan starting with us February 1 as our new Community Life Director. Evan has a
BA in Media Communications from Bethel College in St, Paul, MN and is currently working toward his MA
in Global Leadership from Fuller Theological Seminary. He has previously held Director-level positions for
student and family life at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Thousand Oaks, Community Presbyterian
Church in Danville, CA and Mariners Church in Irvine, CA. Additionally, Evan has led Chapel for the profes-
sional football team, the Green Bay Packers. Evan is currently residing in Tuscon, AZ and is delighted to be
coming back to California and specifically, San Diego for this position!

Office Renovation Project After 25 years, the staff offices are getting a facelift! With several new staff members coming in the next couple
of months, we are reconfiguring the office space to create work stations for everyone. The structural changes
are dividing Don’s office into two and enclosing the current reception area to create an office space. The
reception area will move to where Ann’s desk currently is. Additionally, a fresh coat of paint and carpet will
create a bright, inspiring environment for the staff. A huge thank you to our volunteer team working on this
project: Sue Skala, Jerry Heidt, Dave Simmons, Douglas Buser, Michael Huff, Suzy Spafford, and Steve LaDow.
This project is made possible due to an Endowment gift from Bethany Engel. In 1985, Ms. Engel established a trust, which named the church as the beneficiary of about one-third of her
estate. When she passed away in 2008 the church received $479,000. Ms. Engel’s gift is now making a real
difference in the church as we are beginning to live out the “Change and Regeneration” call in the Mission Study
of 2015 by hiring staff!
This is a great reminder of how such generous gifts can provide for special needs in our church. Endowment
Funds provide long-term stability and financing for mission, building maintenance and repair and special church
projects. Endowment Fund gifts are invested with and managed by the New Covenant Funds of the Presbyterian
Church. Income from the Fund is then spent on worthwhile projects to maintain and improve our church.

On December 31, 2018 we celebrated Don Brenneman’s 29 years of service to
PLCPC! It was a wonderful time of honoring Don and the impact he has had on so

Interfaith Shelter February 24—March 10, 2018
Tony: The Movie Screening

As we prepare for the Interfaith Shelter coming to PLCPC on February
24, we want to take time to learn more about our guests’ experience.
On Saturday, February 3, we will do just that through a movie
screening followed by discussion. A light breakfast will be served.
In August 2017 when Tony ends up homeless after losing his job as a
waiter in San Diego, he is faced with the daily struggles of life on the
streets. His search for housing begins, but then turns into a quest for
solutions to homelessness, not just for himself, but for thousands
people living on the streets across the county. The investigation takes
him to the top levels of government locally, but also to regions across
the country where progress is being made. What do communities do to
significantly reduce homelessness? What is happening in San Diego?
And does Tony find housing?

In San Diego County, over 9,000 of our neighbors are homeless (9,116 according the Regional Task Force for the
Homeless 2017 count, though all experts agree that the actual number is far higher). Less than 2,000 emergency
shelter beds exist, and many factors limit individuals’ eligibility for a bed. Families with school-age children
represent one-quarter of our homeless population.
With these staggering statistics, as a church who is seeking to move beyond our walls to serve our community,
we began to look for ways to SERVE our neighbors. PLCPC is renewing a partnership with the Interfaith Shelter in
2018 and will be a host site for our homeless brothers and sisters, February 24-March 10. PLCPC will house up to
12 guests (men, women and children) who are actively working with case managers at Presbyterian Urban
Ministries to seek employment, long-term housing, and other services. ALL shelter guests are required to obtain
the Hepatitis A vaccination. The risk of spreading Hepatitis A through PLCPC’s participation in the shelter
program is exceedingly low—far lower than using a public restroom or dining at a local restaurant. Numerous
steps have been and will be taken to reduce any further chance of spreading Hepatitis A. Individuals with active
substance abuse or mental health problems are directed to other shelters that have resources appropriate for
their needs.
