WHAT IS POINTILLISM?● Pointillism is a painting technique where small differently colored dots are

arranged in a pattern to form an image.● Developed in 1886 by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.● Branches from Impressionism.

OPTICAL MIXING● The illusion that pointillism uses.● When two colors next to each other are merged by our eyes● “The whole is greater than the sum of

its parts” ● Instead of blending the paint, the

artist utilizes separate dots or strokesof color.

HISTORY OF POINTILLISM● Concept was created by Georges Seurat in the 1880s.● He painted “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” in 1884-1886.● Although not the first artwork

practicing Pointillism, it is the mostwell-known, exhibited at the eighthannual and final Impressionistexhibition in 1886.

● Revolutionized Impressionism, challenging well-known names backthen such as Renoir and Monet, paving a new way forNeoimpressionism.

FAMOUS POINTILLIST ARTISTS

Georges Seurat● Born on December 2, 1859.● Died March 29, 1891.● Was part of the Groupe des Artistes Independant,

whose focus was the advancement in theories in relation to modern art.

● Here he befriended Paul Signac, who also is a major proponent in pointillism.

PAUL SIGNAC● 11 November 1863 – 15 August 1935● Decided to pursue a career as a painter at the age of 18.● Supported Seurat’s pointillist technique● Most of his paintings are of the French Coast, for he liked to paint water.
